Arterial hypertension is the cause of many cardiovascular diseases. Dilation of
aortic root is the main pathophysiologic mechanism for occurrence of aortic regurgitation
in many diseases, whereas high blood pressure may have a direct impact in the presence
of aortic regurgitation. In this study were included 84 patients, 54 with high blood
pressure and 30 subjects of the control group, without arterial hypertension. Aortic
measurements on two dimensional echocardiography showed that average dimensions of
aortic annulus, aortic bulb and sino-tubular junction were always larger in hypertensive
group as compared to the control group (27.82 ± 3.89 mm compared to 23.6 ± 3.45 mm;
34.02 ± 4.65 vs. 31.4 ± 4.69 mm; 30.07 ± 3.51 vs. 28.51 ± 2.91). Aortic regurgitation was
found in 38.89% of hypertensive patients, while in 10% of normotensive subjects
(p=0.03). Patients with arterial hypertension without aortic regurgitation have suffered
from high blood pressure for 7.42 ± 5.95 years, whereas those with severe aortic
regurgitation for 14.3 ± 6.03 years. CONCLUSION: arterial hypertension has an impact
on aortic root size and on the occurrence of aortic regurgitation. Arterial hypertension
duration influences on occurrence of more severe forms of aortic regurgitation.
