prices of pork increased by 30% and they amounted to 4.2 PLN/kg. During the<br />

successive years they began, however, to drop what, together with the increasing cereal<br />

prices deteriorated the profitability of pig management. The increase of purchasing<br />

prices of poultry meat was the lowest one; it amounted only to 10%. In 2005 and 2006,<br />

the purchasing prices of poultry were lowered by 15%; in 2007, the mean purchasing<br />

price of poultry amounted to 3.5 PLN/kg and was equal to the purchasing price of pigs<br />

(Fig.4). Limitation of pork production in 2007 caused increase of its prices in 2008.<br />

3. State of adaptation of animal-product processing enterprises to the EU<br />

standards<br />

At the beginning of 2004, i.e. few months before the accession of Poland to the<br />

European Union, the licenses for trade with the UE-15 states were possessed in Poland<br />

by 101 meat processing enterprises, including 61 entities, acting in red meat sector and<br />

40 plants from poultry sector. During the few successive years, very significant changes<br />

occurred in the discussed structure. In a half of 2008, the following enterprises were<br />

entitled to the trade with the EU: meat industry – 928; dairy industry – 322; poultry<br />

sector – 261 and fishery sector – 244. The total number of enterprises of the mentioned<br />

sectors which satisfied veterinary standards was equal to 1755. The red meat processing<br />

enterprises constituted more than a half of this number (Tab.4).<br />

Dynamic increase of the number of food processing enterprises, possessing the right to<br />

sell their products in the extended EU market was accompanied by significant increase<br />

of production value, occurring practically in the whole food industry, resulting, inter<br />
