Małgorzata Markowska, Danuta Strahl CONVERGENCE OF GDP PER CAPITA IN CZECH,
POLISH AND SLOVAK REGIONS AT THE BACKGROUND OF THE EUROPEAN SPACE
This, in particular, refers to the capital nature of Praha NUTS 2 level region (and cash
inflow associated with it), but also with a significantly more dynamic development of
the regions including capital cities like Mazowieckie or the Slovak region of
Bratislavský kraj.
The convergence processes occurring in the groups of regions representing boundary
GDP per capita rates, in the initial moment of the study, and the “running up” effect
measured by GDP per capita dynamics in 2005 as compared to 1995 are quite
interesting. Relations between the level of GDP per capita in the first moment of
analysis and the dynamics of this characteristics specified for 2005 (1995=100) for ten
regions presenting the highest and the lowest GDP per capita values are presented in
table 3 and 4.
It is worth noticing the positions of regions (ordered with regard to GDP per capita
value in 1995) referring to the GDP per capita dynamics in 2005 as compared to 1995
(see table 3). Among the first ten regions as many as 8 occupy very far positions
regarding dynamics: from place 149 (149,6%) to 261 (122,6%). Only Inner London and
Luxemburg, due to he scale of changes, take 30 th (181,9%) and 32 nd (181,4%) positions.
However, among these regions which in 1995 presented the lowest GDP per capita
values there was registered a definitely higher dynamics of this characteristics - from
164,7% up to 241,1%. Among the regions of three analyzed countries the highest GDP
per capita value in 1995 was registered in the region of Praha (52 nd place among all 265
analyzed EU NUTS 2 level regions – 18,300 PPS), and next at the127 th position
Bratislavský kraj (14,900 PPS) was ranked.
