In the studied period there occurred significant changes in allocating public aid for
enterprises in Poland. First of all the scope of support for dwindling sectors was limited
from 32,0% in 2004 down to 15,7% in 2006. This proves the strengthened position of
both mining and ship construction sector, as the result of obtained public aid in previous
years. At the same time public aid means, for entrepreneurs, increased within the
framework of regional assistance from 9,7% up to almost 35%. They are mainly
directed towards supporting new investments and creating new jobs. Within the scope
of regional aid in 2006 the amount of 625,8 million PLN was granted in the form of
income tax exemption to these entrepreneurs who were engaged in running business
activity on the basis of permissions allowing to function in the area of special economic
zones. This defines an important role of special economic zones to be played in regions’
development.
