Iwona Szczepaniak EVALUATION OF THE COMPETITIVENESS OF POLISH FOOD PRODUCERS
the exports, i.e. exports increased by 18% and imports by 25%. It is very likely that this
proportion will remain similar also in 2008, though the indicators of exports’ and imports’
dynamics will be even lower than those of 2007 and will amount to 7% and 13%
respectively. It can be expected that during the first five years of Poland’s EU membership
the exports of agri-food products will increase almost threefold and the imports –
two-and-half time 1 .
agri-food products. Market analyses.] Nr 21-28, IERiGŻ-PIB, ARR, MRiRW, Warszawa 2005-2008 and
unpublished CAAC data. Author's elaboration.
The trade exchange with the EU Member States was developing much faster than
with third countries. In 2005, the supplies of Polish food to the EU increased almost twofold,
as compared to 2003, and the imports entering Poland increased by almost 56%. In
2006, the turnover indicators relating to the trade with the EU countries amounted to, respectively:
exports – nearly 25% and imports – 18%. In 2007, the exports increased slower
than the imports – by 23% - whereas the imports increased by as much as 34% (the
situation will be similar in 2008: the indicators will amount to 6% and 16% respectively).
1 A significant appreciation of PLN, which has been taking place since the second half of 2004, (According
to Polish National Bank the average EUR/PLN exchange rate was 4.5340 in 2004; in 2005 – 4.0254;
in 2006 – 3.8951 and in 2007 – 3.7829). Since August 2008 there is a depreciation of PLN (despite the
fact that in October the EUR/PLN exchange rate was relatively low – 3.5855), so now there is a contrary
relationship.
