once said that new materials can change the way 

we think about architecture. What Ingels said is what 

architects already know, yet most of them overlook it. 

We may need to reconsider the role of materials in 

architecture and construction. Imagine if architectural 

innovation and materials were limited to bricks 

or concrete; we wouldn’t see new forms of architecture 

as we do today. 

But today’s world architects already have to consider 

far too many critical issues. It’s like we’re at a crossroads. 

On the one hand, we have environmental 

matters that must be given importance. On the other 

hand, the world is growing with new technology and 

brilliant innovations, and artificial intelligence is 

rapidly catching up, and none of us want to fall

traditional culture, which is a part of our identity. 

All of this poses a dilemma for architects and those 

involved in the architecture and building industry— 

how to design buildings that are aesthetically 

pleasing and functional but also sustainable and 

adaptable. This is where the world of smart, innovative, 

and recycled construction materials comes in. 

Innovative materials, smart materials, and sustainable 

materials have clear advantages in reducing 

environmental impact. Recycled materials, for 

instance, reduce reliance on virgin resources, waste 

in the production system, and energy use and carbon 

dioxide emissions. Many materials use innovations 

in materials science to increase efficiency, or they 

can be materials that save energy, create convenience 

for building users, and provide alternatives for architects 

to create work that goes beyond boundaries. 

While the potential for smart materials is apparent, 

there are still challenges. The cost of some materials 

may be a barrier to widespread adoption, and some 

material properties may have problems with longterm 

performance. Despite these challenges, the 

development and adoption of smart materials will 

undoubtedly influence the future of architecture. 

Architects also play a supporting role or participate 

in developing various materials to solve these 

challenges and unlock the full potential of materials 

so that they benefit everyone. 

Thus, developing materials for architecture and 

construction plays an important role. Promoting 

and supporting potential producers or importers of 

materials by various measures and methods, such as 

public relations or awards from professional organizations, 

helps and encourages entrepreneurs, both 

directly and indirectly, to try to present new and 

high-quality materials to the market. This will have 

an overall impact on the profession. The materials 

highlighted in the ASA Platform Selected Materials 

2024 demonstrate the possibilities listed above in 

a variety of ways. 

Embracing smart materials is not just an option; 

it’s a necessity. By harnessing the power of innovation, 

creativity, and sustainability, these materials 

will build a future for architecture that is not only 

aesthetically inspiring but also environmentally

Constructing a building or structure is a time-consuming and unpredictable 

process due to various factors such as weather, logistics, 

transportation, and site conditions. Additionally, the impact on local 

residents must be considered, as construction activities like pile driving 

can cause vibration, dust pollution, and noise, along with the mess 

created at the construction site. 

Pravaruj Thammanoonkul, Assistant to the CEO of KEMREX, recounted 

an experience that sparked the inception of the company. “We faced 

major challenges during the foundation work of a house renovation undertaken 

by my father. The contractor estimated a three-month completion 

time, but due to persistent rain, the work stretched to a year. 

We couldn’t oversee the construction for long. At the end of it, the area 

around was in disarray, with the most shocking aspect being the mud 

that stained the roof of our two-story house,” he shared. 

Prompted by these challenges, his father sought technological solutions 

that could mitigate such construction issues. This quest led to 

the development of an innovative steel pile system. Initially created to 

secure solar panel installations with minimal vibration and site damage, 

KEMREX progressively engineered these piles to accommodate a wider 

range of construction and landscaping needs, tailored to Thailand’s 

unique topography and engineering standards. 

The KEMREX Foundation has since developed a variety of KEMREX steel 

pile series—Series N, Series F/FF, Series FS, Series D, and the latest, 

Series W—to support diverse building requirements and adapt to different 

soil types. These piles can be driven up to a depth of 34 meters, 

support loads up to 200 tons, and are specifically designed to enhance 

tensile and shear resistance. A notable feature of this model is the integrated 

steel dowel, which facilitates seamless integration with concrete 

work, making it ideal for projects that require a robust concrete 

foundation in conjunction with KEMREX steel piles. 

Utilizing steel piling materials offers several advantages over traditional 

cement. KEMREX steel piles are more compact, allowing installation in 

confined spaces, and can significantly reduce construction time—up to 

five times faster than conventional methods. They also require fewer

Despite these benefits, the adoption of KEMREX steel piles is still emerging 

among Thai architects and engineers, many of whom are concerned 

about the new technology’s limitations and costs. “I understand the 

hesitation architects and engineers might feel towards new methods,”

Concerning potential rusting, a common concern for steel structures,

The mflex factory is a crafted concrete brand whose products are a brilliant showcase 

of the skills of Thai craftsmen. The brand was conceived from the passion 

of Manitthar Raisaeng and a group of architect friends for the endless functional 

and aesthetic possibilities of architecture and architectural elements that can be 

adapted and reimagined to cater to diverse demands and applications. The brand’s 

design philosophy emphasizes the reuse of materials or even waste and the crafted 

products’ contributions to the added value of architectural creations, whether the 

play of shadow and light, airflow, or water circulation. 

mflex factory’s products are rooted in the concept of flexibility, enabling them to 

cater to customers’ specific needs. This is coupled with a commitment to innovative 

design. The creator continues to explore and develop new products to meet evolving 

customer demands and architectural trends. Through systematic study and development

In addition to designs and aesthetic appeal, mflex factory strongly emphasizes

to mold concrete into special shapes by hand instead of machines. This technique

into its products. Following an upcycling approach, the brand’s concrete creations 

use materials such as coffee grounds, rice husks, shredded banknotes, and soil.

stage in The Summer Coffee Company - Old Town, a project with intriguing 

challenges throughout the production process. Beyond the commonly encountered 

conventional gray concrete blocks, the manufacturer’s proficiency in shaping 

concrete blocks in an array of hues stems from the production team’s adept 

blending of colors and meticulous testing of pigments within the concrete mix, 

tailored to the preferences of architects and the project owner. In this specific 

endeavor, the architect sought terracotta-orange-toned concrete, aiming to seamlessly 

integrate it with the antiquities of Ayutthaya’s historical ambiance. The 

distinctive aspect of creating specially blended colored concrete lies in ensuring 

uniform color permeation throughout each piece, transcending the mere application 

of surface coatings or sprays. Consequently, the tactile quality of the crafted 

concrete product boasts unique aesthetic and functional attributes.

Another noteworthy undertaking is the Reno Hotel. The project calls for mflex 

factory factory’s innovative approach to fulfill the bespoke design of concrete 

blocks that the architects specifically designed to integrate seamlessly into the 

architectural structure. The traditional concrete casting method utilizes inflexible 

steel molds, which cannot be manipulated to conform to the desired shapes, 

rendering it challenging to achieve the visualized form. mflex factory addressed 

this obstacle by initially crafting model prototypes for concrete blocks and 

employing a handcraft technique, affording the flexibility needed to realize the 

distinct shapes. This methodology not only met but surpassed the expectations 

of the architects in materializing their architectural vision.

“mflex factory places great emphasis on the practical advantages 

of its products through its unique crafting process known as 

“concrete craft.” This method yields concrete pieces that are more 

distinctive and refined than other available options, satisfying the 

demands of both designers and customers.” 

The white structure of the Whitening Bar and Charcoal Bay Wine & Grill at Koh Tao 

in Surat Thani province serves as another example of how mflex factory had to 

respond to customer demands and incorporate distinctive features to withstand 

environmental influences. Given the island’s topography and climate, the 

project used ventilation blocks with special features to resist rain and sunlight. 

These bricks contribute to resilience and resistance against corrosion caused by 

seawater, sea wind, and rainfall. Other logistic issues are also involved due to the 

project’s island location. The remote site required the manufacturer to ensure the 

packaging was efficient enough to prevent damage during cross-sea transportation, 

thus guaranteeing optimal product performance in the long run. 

“Our challenge lies in blending colors to match the shade provided by the client. In 

projects like the Reno Hotel, customization entails crafting blocks with dynamic 

shapes, deviating from the conventional perception of rigid, coarse, and unrefined 

concrete blocks. We can mold them into bird motifs or Thai patterns, as seen in the 

resort project on Koh Lanta Island.”

including fire suppression systems and even galvanized steel pipes to

Pacific Pipe’s products consist of steel pipes designed for both construction 

and architectural applications. Their standard product line is under the 

brand ‘TMZ’, with all pipes in this brand certified to meet the Thai Industrial 

Standard by 100%. The pipes undergo modern testing methods, 

including tensile strength tests, chemical composition analysis, and

Moreover, PAP has introduced a new premium-grade product line called 

‘PAP+’. These pipes are exceptionally strong, made from SS490 grade 

material with a high tensile strength of up to 490 megapascals. They are

within the building. This allows for a reduced cross-sectional area compared

In the realm of architecture, the integration of lightweight bricks into 

building construction is a practice that has been well-established for years. 

These bricks, each with its own distinct characteristics, influence material 

selection based on criteria such as budget, durability, the impact of material 

weight on the structure, installation methods, and long-term upkeep. 

Owing to these factors, lightweight bricks have emerged as a preferred 

material within the construction industry, and consequently, the production 

of these bricks results in a significant amount of waste. Smart Concrete 

Co., Ltd., leveraging over two decades of expertise in producing lightweight 

bricks, has noticed and acknowledged the issue, ingeniously turning this 

challenge into an opportunity by repurposing waste for greater utility. 

“The process of manufacturing lightweight bricks generates a significant 

amount of waste, including unusable, damaged bricks. Traditionally, this

Research data has guided the development of products that are suited to 

contemporary needs and adaptable to various spaces. For example, incorporating 

Econyl fibers into the new carpet collection, Soundtrack, clearly 

conveys this concept by using a variety of background colors, punctuated

Modified Clay Material (MCM) is an 

innovative alternative to traditional 

facade materials in the architecture 

industry, offering a new perspective in 

aesthetics. MCM is made from clay 

and finely powdered stone, with other 

minerals, resulting in a natural color 

without the need for chemical pigments, 

print jobs, or computer selection. It is 

compressed and formed into sheets 

with a fiberglass mesh backing, making 

it easy to install without burdening 

the building structure. The technology 

used in MCM is similar to 3D printing, 

allowing for various depths and patterns 

from the clay and minerals combined 

with the natural properties of texture
