FATHER’S BLESSINGS AND THOUGHTS ....
The word tradition comes from the word Traditio which
means to hand down from generation to generation. So essentially,
everything handed down from one generation to the next
could be called tradition. Our Lord identifies two kinds of traditions.
Some things that are handed down from generation to generation
he calls “traditions of men” (Mark 7:8). The important
things that have been handed down from generation to generation
he calls “The commandments of God” in the same chapter. The
church fathers say that the authentic tradition of the Church is the
guidance of the Holy Spirit throughout history.
We cannot constantly look back to the 'good old days’, because
life is like driving on the highway. There are only two highways in the world that are so straight that one
could drive looking into the rearview mirror. It is good and essential to glance in the rearview mirror once
in a while but to avoid accidents and disasters on our way we need to look ahead. The Israelites had the
same challenge when traveling from Egypt to the promised land. They had to make a decision either to
look back to their life in Egypt and replicate the lifestyle they had by building idols or follow the pillar of
light that led them day and night to a new and better reality. Tradition gives us the foundation to embrace
the future with the guidance of the Life-giving Holy Spirit.
As we said, the church's tradition is the guidance of the Holy Spirit throughout history. Where does
the bad history come from, then? A bad history is formed by those who turn away from God. When we are
in sin, in other words, separated from the source of the good, we automatically start producing evil. Bad
history is simply the memory of evil actions that occurred in the past. Those of us who harbor bad memory
freeze in the past and cannot move forward, like Lot’s wife who turned into a pillar of salt looking back at
sodoma and gomora. It does not matter if we or others are responsible for that negative action in the
past. If we harbor bad memories, we become part of bad history and miss the good present and possibilities
of a brighter future. This is not an easy task, but the difference between people who are in the process
of self-destruction and those who are being saved is decisiveness. Embracing a brighter future is not easy,
but if we are decisive and not doubtful, we can separate ourselves from bad history and seek the guidance
of the Holy Spirit.
Good memories inspire us to move forward.
No matter how hard life becomes, good
memories remind us that possibilities for joy and
hope remain. Better days are ahead, and all we
have to do is move forward to get out of the bad
patch, no matter how big it is. If we cannot remember
anything inspiring from the past, we
need to embrace joyful things today so that tomorrow
we will have good memories of a beautiful
yesterday. As we are finishing the renovation
of our beautiful church let us embrace and be
inspired by the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ
who came in to this world to renew it by His
Word, The Good News.

Και στα Ελληνικά ....
Η λέξη παράδοση προέρχεται από τη λατινική λέξη Traditio που σημαίνει μεταβιβάζω από γενιά
σε γενιά. Ουσιαστικά λοιπόν, όλα όσα παραδίδονται από τη μια γενιά στην άλλη θα μπορούσαν να
ονομαστούν παράδοση. Ο Κύριός μας προσδιορίζει δύο είδη παραδόσεων. Μερικά πράγματα που
παραδίδονται από γενιά σε γενιά τα ονομάζει «παραδόσεις ανθρώπων» (Μάρκος 7:8). Τα σημαντικά
πράγματα που έχουν παραδοθεί από γενιά σε γενιά τα ονομάζει «Οι εντολές του Θεού» στο ίδιο
κεφάλαιο. Οι πατέρες της εκκλησίας λένε ότι η αυθεντική παράδοση της Εκκλησίας είναι η καθοδήγηση
του Αγίου Πνεύματος σε όλη την ιστορία.
Δεν μπορούμε να κοιτάμε συνεχώς πίσω στις «παλιές καλές εποχές», γιατί η ζωή είναι σαν να
οδηγείς στον αυτοκινητόδρομο. Υπάρχουν μόνο δύο αυτοκινητόδρομοι σε όλο τον κόσμο που είναι τόσο
ίσιοι που θα μπορούσε κανείς να οδηγήσει κοιτώντας στον καθρέφτη. Είναι καλό και απαραίτητο να
κοιτάμε τον καθρέφτη πότε-πότε αλλά για να αποφύγουμε ατυχήματα και καταστροφές στο δρόμο μας
πρέπει να κοιτάζουμε μπροστά. Οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν την ίδια πρόκληση όταν ταξίδευαν από την Αίγυπτο
στη γη της επαγγελίας. Έπρεπε να πάρουν μια απόφαση είτε να ανατρέξουν στη ζωή τους στην Αίγυπτο
και να επαναλάβουν τον τρόπο ζωής που είχαν χτίζοντας είδωλα είτε να ακολουθήσουν τον πυλώνα του
φωτός που τους οδήγησε νύχτα και μέρα σε μια νέα και καλύτερη πραγματικότητα. Η παράδοση μας
δίνει τα θεμέλια για να αγκαλιάσουμε το μέλλον με την καθοδήγηση του Ζωοδόχου Αγίου Πνεύματος.
Όπως είπαμε, η παράδοση της εκκλησίας είναι η καθοδήγηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος σε όλη την
ιστορία. Από πού προέρχεται, λοιπόν, η κακή ιστορία; Μια κακή ιστορία γράφετε από εκείνους που
απομακρύνονται από τον Θεό. Όταν είμαστε στην αμαρτία, με άλλα λόγια, χωρισμένοι από την πηγή του
καλού, αρχίζουμε αυτόματα να παράγουμε το κακό. Η κακή ιστορία είναι απλώς η ανάμνηση κακών
πράξεων που συνέβησαν στο παρελθόν. Όσοι από εμάς έχουμε κακή μνήμη παγώνουμε στο παρελθόν και
δεν μπορούμε να προχωρήσουμε, όπως η σύζυγος του Λωτ που μετατράπηκε σε κολόνα αλατιού
κοιτώντας πίσω στα σόδομα και γόμορα. Δεν έχει σημασία αν είμαστε εμείς ή άλλοι υπεύθυνοι για αυτήν
την αρνητική ενέργεια στο παρελθόν. Αν έχουμε κακές αναμνήσεις, γινόμαστε μέρος της κακής ιστορίας
και χάνουμε το καλό παρόν και τις δυνατότητες ενός λαμπρότερου μέλλοντος. Αυτό δεν είναι εύκολο
έργο, αλλά η διαφορά μεταξύ των ανθρώπων που βρίσκονται σε διαδικασία αυτοκαταστροφής και αυτών
που σώζονται είναι η αποφασιστικότητα. Το να αγκαλιάσουμε ένα λαμπρό μέλλον δεν είναι εύκολο, αλλά
αν είμαστε αποφασιστικοί και όχι αμφίβολοι, μπορούμε να απομακρύνουμε τον εαυτό μας από την κακή
ιστορία και να αναζητήσουμε την καθοδήγηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος.
Οι καλές αναμνήσεις μας εμπνέουν να προχωρήσουμε. Όσο σκληρή κι αν γίνεται η ζωή, οι καλές
αναμνήσεις μας υπενθυμίζουν ότι οι δυνατότητες για χαρά και ελπίδα παραμένουν. Έρχονται καλύτερες
μέρες και το μόνο που έχουμε να κάνουμε είναι να προχωρήσουμε για να βγούμε από το κακό μπάλωμα,
όσο μεγάλο κι αν είναι. Εάν δεν μπορούμε να θυμηθούμε τίποτα εμπνευσμένο από το παρελθόν, πρέπει
να αγκαλιάσουμε χαρούμενα πράγματα σήμερα, έτσι ώστε αύριο να έχουμε καλές αναμνήσεις από ένα
όμορφο χθες. Καθώς τελειώνουμε την ανακαίνιση της όμορφης εκκλησίας μας, ας αγκαλιάσουμε και ας
εμπνευστούμε από τη γέννηση του Σωτήρα μας Ιησού Χριστού που ήρθε σε αυτόν τον κόσμο για να τον
ανανεώσει με τον Λόγο Του, τα Καλά Νέα.

Dear Dormition Parishioners & Friends,
PRESIDENT’S REPORT ...
Weren’t we just talking about the new ecclesiastical year that had just begun? Then came Thanksgiving,
where we thank the Lord for all he has done for us. We also give thanks for our families, our
friends and our church. Since the year is also coming to an end, I also want to thank Fr. Anthony and the
Parish Council. They are a wonderful group of people who give their time and talent to our church. Without
their help, ideas and cheerful personalities, I couldn’t have done it without them. Now, we are well
into the Nativity season. Time sure flies.
This Christmas Season reminds me that our Dormition of the Virgin Church is the gift of the Greek
Orthodox People of the United States. We have been joined by many people – many orthodox and nonorthodox
outside and inside of our community from Yiayias and Pappous, Individuals, Families, Corporations
and Foundations– whose generosity is a manifestation of the spirit of Christmas. We hope that
many hearts will be touched in this generous time of the year, so that we can continue to renovate and
transform our church in many ways. Every gift is valuable and will be recorded for posterity. This effort
will enable the church to complete the renovations and to fulfill its mission and ministries with your support.
If you have already made your pledge, now is the time to full-fill it, before year-end, so you can also
benefit from its tax deductibility. At this point in time, we have surpassed the $1.5 million mark that we
have raised in pledges and general donations. Amazing! Who could have possibly thought this could be
done? The love for your community is showing through and through. Many thanks to our fundraising
ministry along with our professional fundraiser, Mr. Nicholas Chakos. I don’t think this would be possible
without Mr. Chakos’ guidance. Thank you Nick!! We have another $500K to raise, so please reach out
and help in every which way you possibly can help your church.
In closing, I would like to once again thank each and every member of the 2022 Parish Council and
all of our church ministry leaders for all their help and continuous support doing God’s work. Our Parish
Council Member, Ms. Maria Binieris after many years of service will not be returning. We wish her the
best of luck and when she has more free time, she can once again join us!
On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to wish our Dormition Church family a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year! Please continue to stay safe through the holiday season, and let’s bring
in 2023 with GREAT health and cheer!

Και στα Ελληνικά...
Αγαπητοί ενορίτες και φίλοι της Κοιμήσεως,
Σαν χθες ήταν που μιλούσαμε για τη νέα εκκλησιαστική χρονιά που μόλις είχε ξεκινήσει; Μετά
ήρθε η Ημέρα των Ευχαριστιών, όπου ευχαριστούμε τον Κύριο για όλα όσα έχει κάνει για εμάς. Τον
ευχαριστούμε επίσης για τις οικογένειές μας, τους φίλους μας και την εκκλησία μας. Και επειδή η χρονιά
τελειώνει, θέλω επίσης να ευχαριστήσω τον π. Αντώνη και το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο. Είναι μια υπέροχη
ομάδα ανθρώπων που δίνουν το χρόνο και το ταλέντο τους στην εκκλησία μας. Χωρίς τη βοήθειά τους,
τις ιδέες και τις χαρούμενες προσωπικότητες τους, δεν θα μπορούσαμε να καταφέρουμε όλα όσα έχουμε
πραγματοποιήσει. Τώρα, έχουμε μπει για τα καλά στην εποχή της Γέννησης. Ο χρόνος σίγουρα κυλά.
Αυτή η περίοδος των Χριστουγέννων μου θυμίζει ότι η Εκκλησία της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου
είναι δώρο του Ελληνορθόδοξου Λαού των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Μαζί μας έχουν έρθει πολλοί
άνθρωποι – πολλοί ορθόδοξοι και μη, εκτός και εντός της κοινότητάς μας, από Γιαγιάδες και
Παππούδες, ιδιώτες, οικογένειες, εταιρείες και ιδρύματα– των οποίων η γενναιοδωρία είναι μια
εκδήλωση του πνεύματος των Χριστουγέννων. Ελπίζουμε ότι θα συγκινηθούν πολλές καρδιές αυτή τη
γενναιόδωρη εποχή του χρόνου, ώστε να συνεχίσουμε να ανακαινίζουμε και να μεταμορφώνουμε την
εκκλησία μας με πολλούς τρόπους. Κάθε δώρο είναι πολύτιμο και θα καταγραφεί για τους απογόνους
μας. Αυτή η προσπάθεια θα επιτρέψει στην εκκλησία να ολοκληρώσει τις ανακαινίσεις και να
εκπληρώσει την αποστολή και τις διακονίες της με την υποστήριξή σας. Εάν έχετε ήδη δεσμευτεί, τώρα
είναι η ώρα να συμπληρώσετε πλήρως αυτή την δέσμευσή σας, πριν από το τέλος του έτους, ώστε να
επωφεληθείτε και από τη φορολογική έκπτωση. Αυτή τη στιγμή, έχουμε ξεπεράσει το όριο του 1,5
εκατομμυρίου δολαρίων που έχουμε συγκεντρώσει σε υποσχέσεις και γενικές δωρεές. Καταπληκτικό!
Ποιος θα μπορούσε να σκεφτεί ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να γίνει; Η αγάπη για την κοινότητά σας φαίνεται
διαρκώς. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ το Υπουργείο μας για τη συγκέντρωση χρημάτων μαζί με τον
επαγγελματία μας έρανο, τον κ. Νικόλαο Τσάκο. Δεν νομίζω ότι αυτό θα ήταν δυνατό χωρίς την
καθοδήγηση του κ. Τσάκου. Ευχαριστώ Νίκο!! Έχουμε άλλα 500.000 $ να συγκεντρώσουμε, γι' αυτό
παρακαλούμε επικοινωνήστε και βοηθήστε με κάθε τρόπο που μπορείτε να βοηθήσετε την εκκλησία
σας.
Κλείνοντας, θα ήθελα για άλλη μια φορά να ευχαριστήσω κάθε μέλος του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου
του 2022 και όλους τους ηγέτες των εκκλησιαστικών μας υπουργείων για όλη τη βοήθειά τους και τη
συνεχή υποστήριξή τους υπηρετώντας τον Θεό. Το μέλος του Ενοριακού μας Συμβουλίου κα Μαρία
Μπινιέρη μετά από πολλά χρόνια υπηρεσίας δεν θα επιστρέψει. Της ευχόμαστε καλή τύχη και όταν έχει
περισσότερο ελεύθερο χρόνο, μπορεί και πάλι να είναι μαζί μας.
Εκ μέρους του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, θα ήθελα να ευχηθώ στην οικογένεια της Εκκλησίας της
Κοιμήσεώς μας Καλά Χριστούγεννα και Ευτυχισμένο το Νέο Έτος! Παρακαλούμε να συνεχίσετε να
παραμένετε ασφαλείς κατά τη διάρκεια της εορταστικής περιόδου και
ας

Stewardship Ministry Presentation

Dear brothers and sisters, I want to share some words with you today from a sermon I heard a while ago
that had an impact on me. In today’s Gospel, the foolish man had cultivated so many crops that he didn’t have
where to store it and he reasoned that he should build a bigger barn to store it. God called him foolish, for today
was his last day alive and who will then own his crop?
(1st Corinthians - chapter 4 verse 7) God says - “What do you have that you did not receive?” NOTH-
ING! Then why are you bragging as if it came from you? Why are you saving it as if it’s all yours?
God has ownership of ALL of creation. We all know this.
So, if God owns everything, you and I, own nothing.
You own nothing, including your own life because that too can be taken from you.
Everything we have is given to us by God - AND He has given us full freedom to manage it how we
choose. He gives us the choice every day.
Your life is yours to manage, not yours to own.
Most people think they own what they don’t own, just because they have it.
What God has established is a management company to manage what He owns. He created us to manage
the wellbeing of His property, this kingdom. God has tasked us to protect & expand what He has given each of
us.
God created this Kingdom that we live in, with the property that He has asked us to protect and expand
but we have misunderstood our role because we think we own what He has only given us to manage. And whenever
ownership and management aren’t on the same page, there’s going to be conflict. Whenever a manager
doesn’t do what the Owner has requested, there are going to be issues.
God made us stewards of His kingdom and equipped us with everything we need to do so effectively. He
made Man in His own image. An image is just a mirror. So, God made us in His image so we can mirror Him, be
like Him. God is expecting His people to expand what He gave them. Think about that.
We all know about Adam & Eve… In Genesis, Chapter 2, verse 15, the bible reads - “The LORD God
then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it. The LORD God gave the
man this order: You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and
evil. From that tree you shall not eat; when you eat from it you shall die.”
So, God told Adam, I will give you a house in My home and we’ll call it Eden. In that verse, God tells
Adam to cultivate and care for his home (Eden) - to unlock its potential. When a farmer cultivates the soil, he’s
doing it to plant seeds, and the seeds will produce new things. In other words, God asked Adam to bring out of
the land its full potential.
Therefore, it is a sin not to maximize our potential. It is wrong not to maximize, under God, the potential
of what He’s placed in our responsibility as His manager.
God told Adam, eat freely. In other words, I want you to get everything out of creation, that creation has
the potential to provide you. But then HE says, do not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Now, why would God put a tree you can’t eat from, that could kill you, in the middle of all these other
incredible trees in the garden? Because he wants to remind Adam that he doesn’t own anything. That tree was
God’s and He wanted Adam to be reminded that he was not the owner of the garden, but merely the manager.
God didn’t want Adam to eat from the tree of Knowledge of good & evil, I want you to think of this tree
as our Internet, the source of knowledge that is good and evil. But why wouldn’t Adam eat from this tree when it
has so much information on it?

Because God does not want the basis of our knowledge to come from just any source, God wants our knowledge
to come from what He reveals to us through the Gospels, in church, from our bible. He wants us, as His managers/stewards,
to cultivate and grow what He has given us based on the knowledge He is trying to teach us, not
information that we get from the internet. But nowadays we spend most of our days on the internet, and very little,
if at all, learning from God.
Our world is in chaos today because people are living their lives based on the internet, rather than the revealed
will of God. So as a manager of God’s kingdom, you are free to mess up the garden, or mess up your life
or mess up your family or mess up the world, and just because you were created by God doesn’t mean you don't
have the freedom to be a bad manager.
It is close to impossible to cultivate and grow what you have been given if you don’t mirror God. God has
given us this church, this community, our family - to cultivate it, grow it, to bring out its full potential. A lot of us
have good motives but are making bad decisions because it's not coming from our steward relationship, it's because
we think we have the right to make decisions without the input of the owner, our God.
We are the caretakers of God's property. Our time, our talents, our treasures - it’s all God’s. How well
have you managed your time? Your talents? A year ago, I had a very full life- a new home, new job, new baby,
newly married - all these changes took up a lot of my attention. It was around that time that Father Anthony
asked me if I would consider being on the parish council, and at first, all I had were excuses. Excuses are easy to
find. There is no time; I’ll do it next year; It’s going to take away from my family.
But instead of allowing these excuses to determine our answers, pray to God and listen to what He is telling
you. Personally, I realized God called me to give of my time and of my blessings. He has given me so much
to manage and in return, he merely asked that I perform a service for the church. I thought it would be an added
burden to serve the church, but since being on the parish council, it’s strengthened my relationship to God and to
our community and it’s helped me realize how listening to God and what He calls me to do rewards me in ways I
couldn’t have realized.
God says, if you want the full expression of me, working in your life, give up ownership - let go of the
excuses.
So, the question is, will you give up ownership in terms of God, become a manager and find out what
God wants in every area that is under your responsibility? Give Him permission to use all that He’s given you to
unleash the potential of all you are, all you have, and all that you are responsible for.
Because if you are, then watch what He does in your life, in your world, for your good.
Και στα Ελληνικά...
Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές, θέλω να μοιραστώ μερικά λόγια μαζί σας σήμερα από ένα κήρυγμα που
άκουσα πριν από λίγο καιρό που με επηρέασε πάρα πολύ. Στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο, ο ανόητος άνθρωπος είχε
καλλιεργήσει τόσες πολλές καλλιέργειες που δεν είχε πού να τις αποθηκεύσει και σκέφτηκε ότι έπρεπε να χτύσει
έναν μεγαλύτερο αχυρώνα για να τις αποθηκεύσει. Ο Θεός τον αποκάλεσε ανόητο, γιατί σήμερα ήταν η
τελευταία μέρα στη ζωή και σε ποιον θα ανήκει τότε η σοδειά του;
(Α' Κορινθίους - κεφάλαιο 4 εδάφιο 7) Ο Θεός λέει - "Τι έχεις που δεν έλαβες;" ΤΙΠΟΤΑ! Τότε γιατί
καυχιέσαι σαν να ήρθε από σένα; Γιατί το αποθηκεύεις σαν να είναι όλο δικό σου;
Ο Θεός έχει την ιδιοκτησία ΟΛΗΣ της δημιουργίας. Το ξέρουμε όλοι αυτό.
Έτσι, αν ο Θεός κατέχει τα πάντα, εσείς και εγώ δεν έχουμε τίποτα.

Δεν κατέχουμε τίποτα, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της δικής μας ζωής, γιατί και αυτό μπορεί να μας αφαιρεθεί.
Ό,τι έχουμε μας το δίνει ο Θεός - ΚΑΙ μας έχει δώσει πλήρη ελευθερία να το διαχειριζόμαστε όπως
επιλέγουμε. Μας δίνει την επιλογή κάθε μέρα.
Μπορούμε να διαχειριστούμε τη ζωή μου, αλλά δεν την κατέχουμε.
Οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι πιστεύουν ότι κατέχουν ό,τι δεν τους ανήκει, μόνο και μόνο επειδή το έχουν.
Αυτό που έχει δημιουργήσει ο Θεός είναι μια εταιρεία διαχείρισης για τη διαχείριση αυτών που κατέχει.
Μας δημιούργησε για να διαχειριζόμαστε την ευημερία της περιουσίας Του, αυτού του βασιλείου. Ο Θεός μας έχει
αναθέσει να προστατεύσουμε και να επεκτείνουμε όσα έχει δώσει στον καθένα μας.
Ο Θεός δημιούργησε αυτό το Βασίλειο στο οποίο ζούμε, με την ιδιότητα που μας ζήτησε να το
προστατεύσουμε και να το επεκτείνουμε, αλλά έχουμε παρεξηγήσει τον ρόλο μας γιατί πιστεύουμε ότι κατέχουμε
αυτό που μας έχει δώσει μόνο να διαχειριστούμε. Και όποτε η ιδιοκτησία και η διαχείριση δεν βρίσκονται στην ίδια
σελίδα, θα υπάρξει σύγκρουση. Όποτε ένας διαχειριστής δεν κάνει αυτό που έχει ζητήσει ο Κάτοχος, θα υπάρχουν
προβλήματα.
Ο Θεός μας έκανε διαχειριστές της βασιλείας Του και μας εξόπλισε με όλα όσα χρειαζόμαστε για να το
κάνουμε αποτελεσματικά. Έφτιαξε τον Άνθρωπο κατ' εικόνα Του. Μια εικόνα είναι απλώς ένας καθρέφτης. Έτσι ο
Θεός μας έφτιαξε κατ' εικόνα Του για να μπορούμε να Τον καθρεφτίζουμε, να είμαστε σαν Αυτόν. Ο Θεός
περιμένει από τους ανθρώπους Του να επεκτείνουν αυτά που τους έδωσε. Σκεφτείτε το.
Όλοι γνωρίζουμε για τον Αδάμ και την Εύα… Στη Γένεση, Κεφάλαιο 2, στίχος 15, η Βίβλος λέει: «Ο
Κύριος ο Θεός πήρε τότε τον άνθρωπο και τον εγκατέστησε στον κήπο της Εδέμ, για να τον καλλιεργήσει και να
τον φροντίσει. Ο Κύριος ο Θεός έδωσε το άνθρωπε αυτή τη διαταγή: Είσαι ελεύθερος να φας από οποιοδήποτε από
τα δέντρα του κήπου εκτός από το δέντρο της γνώσης του καλού και του κακού. Από αυτό το δέντρο δεν θα φάς.
Όταν φας από αυτό θα πεθάνεις».
Έτσι ο Θεός είπε στον Αδάμ, θα σου δώσω ένα σπίτι στο σπίτι Μου και θα το ονομάσουμε Εδέμ. Σε αυτό το
εδάφιο, ο Θεός λέει στον Αδάμ να καλλιεργήσει και να φροντίσει το σπίτι του (Εδέμ) - για να ξεκλειδώσει τις
δυνατότητές του. Όταν ένας αγρότης καλλιεργεί το έδαφος, το κάνει για να φυτέψει σπόρους και οι σπόροι θα
παράγουν νές σοδειές. Με άλλα λόγια, ο Θεός ζήτησε από τον Αδάμ να βγάλει από τη γη το πλήρες δυναμικό της.
Επομένως, είναι αμαρτία να μην μεγιστοποιούμε τις δυνατότητές μας. Είναι λάθος να μην μεγιστοποιούμε,
υπό τον Θεό, τις δυνατότητες αυτού που έχει τοποθετήσει στην ευθύνη μας ως διαχειριστή Του.
Ο Θεός είπε στον Αδάμ, φάε ελεύθερα. Με άλλα λόγια, θέλω να πάρεις από τη δημιουργία, όλα όσα έχει τη
δυνατότητα να σου προσφέρει. Αλλά τότε λέει, μην τρώς από το δέντρο της γνώσης του καλού και του κακού.
Τώρα, γιατί ο Θεός να βάλει ένα δέντρο από το οποίο δεν μπορούμε να φάμε, που θα μπορούσε να μας
σκοτώσει, στη μέση όλων αυτών των άλλων απίστευτων δέντρων στον κήπο; Επειδή θέλει να υπενθυμίσει στον
Αδάμ ότι δεν του ανήκει τίποτα. Αυτό το δέντρο ήταν του Θεού και ήθελε να υπενθυμιστεί στον Αδάμ ότι δεν ήταν
ο ιδιοκτήτης του κήπου, αλλά απλώς ο διαχειριστής.
Ο Θεός δεν ήθελε ο Αδάμ να φάει από το δέντρο της Γνώσης του καλού και του κακού. Θέλω να σκεφτείτε
αυτό το δέντρο ως το Διαδίκτυό μας, την πηγή γνώσης που είναι καλό και κακό. Αλλά γιατί ο Αδάμ να μην έτρωγε
από αυτό το δέντρο όταν έχει τόσες πολλές πληροφορίες από αυτό; Επειδή ο Θεός δεν θέλει η βάση της γνώσης μας
να προέρχεται από οποιαδήποτε πηγή. Ο Θεός θέλει η γνώση μας να προέρχεται από αυτά που μας αποκαλύπτει
μέσω των Ευαγγελίων, στην εκκλησία, από τη Βίβλο μας. Θέλει εμείς, ως διευθυντές/ διαχειριστές Του, να
καλλιεργήσουμε και να αναπτύξουμε αυτό που μας έχει δώσει με βάση τις γνώσεις που προσπαθεί να μας διδάξει,
όχι πληροφορίες που παίρνουμε από το διαδίκτυο. Αλλά σήμερα περνάμε τις περισσότερες μέρες μας στο
Διαδίκτυο και ελάχιστα, έως καθόλου, μαθαίνοντας από τον Θεό.
Ο κόσμος μας βρίσκεται σε χάος σήμερα επειδή οι άνθρωποι ζουν τη ζωή τους με βάση το Διαδίκτυο και όχι
το αποκαλυφθέν θέλημα του Θεού. Ως διαχειριστές του βασιλείου του Θεού, είμαστε ελεύθεροι να ανακατέψουμε

τον κήπο, ή να ανακατέψουε τη ζωή μας ή να ανακατέψουμε την οικογένειά μας ή να ανακατέψουμε τον κόσμο, και
μόνο και μόνο επειδή δημιουργηθήκαμε από τον Θεό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν έχουμε την ελευθερία να είμαστε κακοί
διευθηντές.
Είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να καλλιεργήσεις και να μεγαλώσεις αυτό που σου έχει δοθεί αν δεν καθρεφτίζεις τον
Θεό. Ο Θεός μας έδωσε αυτή την εκκλησία, αυτή την κοινότητα, την οικογένειά μας - να την καλλιεργήσουμε, να
την μεγαλώσουμε, να αναδείξουμε πλήρως τις δυνατότητές της. Πολλοί από εμάς έχουμε καλά κίνητρα, αλλά
παίρνουμε κακές αποφάσεις, επειδή δεν προέρχονται από τη σχέση του διαχειριστή μας. Είναι επειδή πιστεύουμε ότι
έχουμε το δικαίωμα να λαμβάνουμε αποφάσεις χωρίς τη συμβολή του ιδιοκτήτη, του Θεού μας.
Είμαστε οι φροντιστές της περιουσίας του Θεού. Ο χρόνος μας, τα ταλέντα μας, οι θησαυροί μας - όλα είναι
του Θεού. Πόσο καλά έχετε διαχειριστεί τον χρόνο σας; Τα ταλέντα σας; Πριν από ένα χρόνο είχα μια πολύ γεμάτη
ζωή - νέο σπίτι, νέα δουλειά, νέο μωρό, νιόπαντρη - όλες αυτές οι αλλαγές τράβηξαν πολύ την προσοχή μου. Εκείνη
την εποχή ήταν που ο πατέρας Αντώνιος μου ζήτησε να σκεφτώ αν θα μπορούσα να είμαι μέλος του ενοριακού
συμβουλίου και στην αρχή το μόνο που είχα ήταν δικαιολογίες. Οι δικαιολογίες είναι εύκολο να βρεθούν. Δεν
υπάρχει χρόνος. Θα το κάνω του χρόνου. Θα αφαιρέσει χρόνο από την οικογένειά μου.
Αλλά αντί να επιτρέψουμε σε αυτές τις δικαιολογίες να καθορίσουν τις απαντήσεις μας, ας προσευχηθούμε
στον Θεό και ακούσουμε τι μας λέει. Προσωπικά, συνειδητοποίησα ότι ο Θεός με κάλεσε να δώσω από τον χρόνο
μου και από τις ευλογίες μου. Μου έδωσε τόσα πολλά να διαχειριστώ και σε αντάλλαγμα, απλώς ζήτησε να κάνω
μια λειτουργία για την εκκλησία. Νόμιζα ότι θα ήταν πρόσθετο βάρος να υπηρετήσω την εκκλησία, αλλά από τη
στιγμή που έγινα μέλος του ενοριακού συμβουλίου, ενισχύθηκε η σχέση μου με τον Θεό και την κοινότητά μας και
με βοήθησε να συνειδητοποιήσω πώς με το να ακούω τον Θεό και το τι με καλεί να κάνω με ανταμείβει με τρόπους
που δεν μπορούσα να συνειδητοποιήσω.
Ο Θεός λέει, αν θέλετε την πλήρη έκφραση του εαυτού μου, που εργάζομαι στη ζωή σας, εγκαταλείψτε την
ιδιοκτησία - αφήστε τις δικαιολογίες.
Λοιπόν, το ερώτημα είναι, θα εγκαταλείψετε την ιδιοκτησία με τους όρους του Θεού; Θα γίνετε διευθηντής
και θα μάθετε τι θέλει ο Θεός σε κάθε τομέα που είναι υπό την ευθύνη σας; Δώστε Του την άδεια να
χρησιμοποιήσει όλα αυτά που σας έδωσε για να απελευθερώσετε τις δυνατότητες όλων όσων είστε, όλων όσων
έχετε και όλλων όσων είστε υπεύθυνοι.
Γιατί αν το κάνετε, τότε προσέξτε τι κάνει στη ζωή σας, στον κόσμο σας, για το καλό σας.

Thriving Congregations Initiative Update

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to our parishioners today about the Thriving Congregations Initiative.
We had our Fall 2023 meeting on Saturday November 19, and I thank you for the opportunity to provide an update.
The Lilly Foundation provided The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston a large grant to support the Thriving
Congregations Initiative. This 4 to 5-year program is designed to guide our parishes to thrive. It will help each parish
•understand our cultural and social contexts,
•to develop and adopt a clear mission and vision,
•to cultivate authentic Orthodox Christian practices, and
•to plan for sustaining our own efforts at the parish level.
What is a thriving congregation? Allow me to ask a different question. If we closed our church, would Somerville
know that we are no longer here, other than for the festival?
To become a thriving congregation, we need to start with Why, our Why. Why do we have a church, here, in
Somerville?
• Η πρώτη Έλληνες που ήρθαν στο Somerville έχτισαν την εκκλησία για να καλωσορίσουν τους φίλους και τους
συγγενείς τους και να τους προσφέρουν την ίδια θρησκευτική και κοινοτική εμπειρία που είχαν στην πατρίδα
τους. Ακόμα περιμένουμε Έλληνες μετανάστες να γεμίσουν τα στασίδια της εκκλησίας μας; Είναι αυτός ο αγωγός
προς το μέλλον μας;
• Στην Ελλάδα, και σε πολλές άλλες χώρες, υπάρχει μόνο μία κύρια θρησκεία σε κάθε κοινότητα. Η εκκλησία
βρίσκεται στο κέντρο της κοινότητας. Όλοι στην κοινότητα είναι Έλληνες. Η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία της
Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου και η γειτονιά γύρω της δεν βρίσκεται στο κέντρο μιας Έλληνικής κοινότητας. Δεν
βρίσκεται στο κέντρο μιας Χριστιανικής κοινότητας με μέλη που πηγαίνουν στην εκκλησία. Πολλοί που θα
έρθουν αύριο και μεθαύριο στην εκκλησία μας δεν θα έχουν μία σχέση με την Ελλάδα.Δεν είναι προφανές ποια
πρέπει να είναι η αποστολή μας.
• Γιατί είμαστε εδώ? Ποιοι είμαστε εδώ για να υπηρετήσουμε; Ποιος είναι ο γείτονάς μας, ποιοι είναι στην
κοινότητά μας και ποιοι θα είναι στην κοινότητά μας; Θα ευδοκιμήσει η κοινότητά μας;
We are not alone. This is not a Greek Orthodox problem. This is not even a Christian problem. This is a challenge
for all faiths. Church, faith in God, and the practice of our faith have been replaced with worldly concerns.
Let me give an example shared this month at one of our meetings, with a couple of small edits. You have
Patriot’s football tickets. You
•go on Facebook and let everyone know you are going and
•invite friends to go with you.
•You go to watch your team win. You know when your team wins, and when it loses.
And this is just a football game.
•Do we tell our family and friends that we are going to church on Sunday?
•Do we invite them to come with us?
•Do we know why we go to church?
•Do we know what the goal of the church is or what it means for our church to win?
These are difficult questions, and I only ask them to show that we have work to do, especially if we want to
grow as a Christian community. This is why the Lilly Foundation is funding Thriving Congregations Initiative.
The Thriving Congregations Initiative will help us determine for ourselves where we are today, where we want
to be as a parish, how to get there, and how to thrive. At the last meeting we learned about how the Orthodox Ministry
Services and the Faithtree Relationship Project can help us.
The Orthodox Ministry Services is already helping us with our strategic plan, so that we understand where we
are winning and where we need help. They have reviewed our church finances and have made recommendations on
next steps.

The Faithtree Relationship Project can help us with the future of our church. For those families that have
children from 9 to 25 years old, how many of your children struggle with their identity, with intimacy, and with
mental health?
•Do they know who they are? Are they comfortable with who they are?
•Do they know how to love, or who to love, or what to love, or what love is?
•Do they have friends, are they lonely, do they feel stress, anxiety, sadness, or depression?
•Where are they getting their information and help from? Do you trust the school systems to guide your
child through these difficult years? Which teacher will utter the words “You are a Child of God”?
The Faithtree Relationship Project has developed books and videos to help parents with these difficult topics.
Theologians, psychologists, and Youth Program experts have come together to create this program.
The Thriving Congregations Initiative offers these and other programs to help the parishes of the Boston
Metropolis. We need to develop a plan on how to use the tools to build a relevant parish in our community.
I hope you can see why I am so excited to be leading the Thriving Congregations Initiative for our parish.
We are a resilient church. We came out of COVID strong! Look at how we are building for our future, both with
our buildings and our stewardship! The Thriving Congregations Initiative will certainly help guide us to become a
more vibrant church and an integral part of the communities we are called to serve.
The Lilly Foundation is providing the money, and along with the Metropolis, is providing the guidance. It
is our responsibility to pave the path forward for this beautiful community.
Who will we be in the icon of the Good Samaritan? We can either help our community and thrive, or we
can pray for the charity of strangers.

Δεν είμαστε μόνοι. Δεν είναι Eλληνορθόδοξο πρόβλημα. Αυτό δεν είναι καν Χριστιανικό πρόβλημα. Eίναι
μια πρόκληση για όλες τις θρησκείες. Η Εκκλησία, η πίστη στον Θεό και η πρακτική της πίστης μας έχουν
αντικατασταθεί από εγκόσμιες ανησυχίες.
Θα δώσω ένα παράδειγμα που ακούσαμε σε μια από τις συναντήσεις μας, με μερικές μικρές αλλαγές.
Έχετε εισιτήρια να δείτε τα Patriots στο Foxboro.
• Στο Facebook, λέτε σε όλους ότι πηγαίνετε.
• Προσκαλείτε φίλους να πάνε μαζί σας.
• Πηγαίνετε για να δείτε την ομάδα σας να κερδίσει. Ξέρετε πώς και πότε κερδίζει ή χάνει.
Αυτό είναι απλώς παιχνίδι.
• Ενημερώνουμε την οικογένεια και τους φίλους μας ότι θα πάμε στην εκκλησία την Κυριακή;
• Προσκαλούμε την οικογένεια και τους φίλους μας να έρθουν μαζί μας;
• Ξέρουμε γιατί πηγαίνουμε στην εκκλησία;
• Ξέρουμε ποιος είναι ο στόχος της εκκλησίας ή πώς κερδίσει η εκκλησία μας;
Αυτές είναι δύσκολες ερωτήσεις και τους ζητώ μόνο για να δείξουμε ότι έχουμε δουλειά να κάνουμε,
ειδικά αν θέλουμε να αναπτυχθούμε ως Χριστιανική κοινότητα. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο το Lilly Foundation
χρηματοδοτεί το Thriving Congregations Initiative.
Thriving Congregations Initiative θα μας βοηθήσει να προσδιορίσουμε μόνοι μας πού βρισκόμαστε
σήμερα, πού θέλουμε να είμαστε ως ενορία, πώς να φτάσουμε εκεί και πώς να ευδοκιμήσουμε. Στην τελευταία
συνάντηση μάθαμε πώς μπορούν να μας βοηθήσουν το Orthodox Ministry Services και το Faithtree Relationship
Project.
Το Orthodox Ministry Services μας βοηθά ήδη στο στρατηγικό μας σχέδιο, ώστε να καταλάβουμε πού
κερδίζουμε και πού χρειαζόμαστε βοήθεια. Εξέτασαν τα οικονομικά της εκκλησίας μας και μας έδωσαν
συστάσεις.
Το Faithtree Relationship Project μπορεί να μας βοηθήσει με το μέλλον της εκκλησίας μας. Για τις
οικογένειες που έχουν παιδιά από 9 έως 25 ετών, πόσα από τα παιδιά σας παλεύουν με την ταυτότητά τους και την
ψυχική τους υγεία;
• Αγωνίζονται με την ταυτότητά τους;
• Ξέρουν πώς να αγαπούν, ή ποιον να αγαπούν, ή τι να αγαπούν, ή τι είναι η αγάπη;
• Έχουν φίλους; Νιώθουν άγχος, θλίψη ή κατάθλιψη;
• Ποιος τους βοηθάει; Εμπιστεύεστε τα σχολεία να καθοδηγήσουν το παιδί σας σε αυτά τα δύσκολα χρόνια;
Ποιος δάσκαλος θα προφέρει τις λέξεις «Είσαι παιδί του Θεού»;
Το Faithtree Relationship Project έχει αναπτύξει βιβλία και βίντεο για να βοηθήσει γονείς σε αυτά τα
δύσκολα θέματα. Θεολόγοι και ψυχολόγοι συγκεντρώθηκαν για να δημιουργήσουν αυτό το πρόγραμμα.
Το Thriving Congregations Initiative προσφέρει αυτά και άλλα προγράμματα για να βοηθήσει τις ενορίες
στην Επισκοπή της Βοστώνης. Χρειαζόμαστε σχέδιο για το πώς να χρησιμοποιήσουμε τα εργαλεία για να
οικοδομήσουμε μια σχετική ενορία στην κοινότητά μας.
Είμαι ενθουσιασμένος που ηγούμαι το Thriving Congregations Initiative για την ενορία μας. Είμαστε μια
ανθεκτική εκκλησία. Βγήκαμε δυνατοί από τον COVID! Χτίζουμε για το μέλλον μας, με τα κτίριά μας και με τη
επιστασία μας! Το Thriving Congregations Initiative σίγουρα θα μας βοηθήσει να γίνουμε μια πιο ζωντανή
εκκλησία.
To Lilly Foundation παρέχει τα ταμεία και μαζί με τη Μητρόπολη παρέχει την καθοδήγηση. Είναι ευθύνη
μας να ανοίξουμε το δρόμο προς τα εμπρός για την όμορφη κοινότητά μας.
Ποιοι στην εικόνα του Καλού Σαμαρείτη θα είμαστε; Μπορούμε είτε να βοηθήσουμε την κοινότητά μας
και να ευδοκιμήσουμε, είτε μπορούμε να προσευχηθούμε για τη φιλανθρωπία των ξένων.

As you know, every year we celebrate house blessings beginning around Theophany, the Feast of Christ's
baptism. It is important that we bless the things that we use. At this time of the year not only do we bless our homes,
but also our vehicles and our pets but most importantly the church has many ways of blessing us and our children.
A house blessing is also a great way of strengthening our relationship with the community. Please fill out the
enclosed card and let me know when you would like me to bless your home and family.
Please note that all you have to provide is a bowl of water, an Icon of Christ or a Patron Saint, a candle,
and a few branches of basil with which we will sprinkle the house with the holy water.

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,
Ξεκινήσαμε μια νέα χρονιά και προσεύχομαι ο Θεός να μας ευλογεί άφθονα όλους αυτή τη νέα χρονιά.
Εύχομαι η οικογένεια και οι φίλοι σας να είναι υγιείς. Φέτος έχω δεσμευτεί να επισκεφτώ όσο το δυνατόν
περισσότερα μέλη της κοινότητάς μας.
Όπως γνωρίζετε, κάθε χρόνο ευλογούμε τα σπίτια μας ξεκινώντας γύρω στα Θεοφάνεια, την εορτή της
βάπτισης του Χριστού. Είναι σημαντικό να ευλογούμε τα πράγματα που χρησιμοποιούμε. Αυτή την εποχή του
χρόνου όχι μόνο ευλογούμε τα σπίτια μας, αλλά και τα οχήματά μας και τα κατοικίδιά μας. Αλλά το πιο σημαντικό
είναι ότι η εκκλησία έχει πολλούς τρόπους να ευλογεί εμάς και τα παιδιά μας.
Η ευλογία του σπιτιού είναι επίσης ένας πολύ καλός τρόπος για να ενισχύσουμε τη σχέση μας με την
κοινότητα. Παρακαλώ συμπληρώστε την συνημμένη κάρτα και ενημερώστε με πότε θέλετε να ευλογήσω το σπίτι
και την οικογένειά σας.
Σημειώστε ότι το μόνο πράγμα που πρέπει να διατέθετε είναι ένα μπολ με νερό, μια εικόνα του
Χριστού ή ενός Πολιούχου, ένα κερί και μερικά κλαδιά βασιλικού με τα οποία θα ραντίσουμε το σπίτι με τον

We are fast approaching Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With
that, we are also completing another calendar year. May the blessings of the newborn King come upon you and your
family. May we be blessed with abundance and with the spirit of generosity and love for God and for one another.
As you have always been very generous in the past years towards the Church and your community, this
is just a friendly reminder regarding your stewardship for 2022.
It is very important to remember that this is the third year that Dormition of the Virgin Mary has transitioned to
True Stewardship from the mandatory dues system. This model has been a blessing both for the church and for our
stewards because the members of our community decide how much to give to the Church based on their blessings from
God.
Please consider fulfilling your 2022 Stewardship as we approach the end of the year.
The generosity of stewards like yourself has made a huge impact on the ministries of our community. For the
first time in many years we have been able to invest in our youth and young adult ministries and we have great plans
for our older generation who have been and remain the pillars of our community.
May God grant you many years and great joy during this wonderful season of Christmas and beyond.
Πλησιάζουμε στα Χριστούγεννα και τον εορτασμό της γέννησης του Κυρίου και Σωτήρα μας Ιησού Χριστού.
Κι έτσι, συμπληρώνουμε και ακόμα ένα ημερολογιακό έτος. Είθε οι ευλογίες του νεογέννητου Βασιλιά να έρθουν σε
εσάς και την οικογένειά σας. Είθε να είμαστε ευλογημένοι με αφθονία και με πνεύμα γενναιοδωρίας και αγάπης για
τον Θεό και τους συνανθρώπους μας.
Καθώς ήσασταν πάντα πολύ γενναιόδωροι τα τελευταία χρόνια προς την Εκκλησία και την κοινότητά
σας, αυτή είναι απλώς μια φιλική υπενθύμιση σχετικά με τη οικονομική επιστασία σας για το 2022.
Είναι πολύ σημαντικό να θυμόμαστε ότι αυτή είναι η τρίτη χρονιά που η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου έχει μεταβεί
στην Αληθινή Οικονομική Επιστασία από το σύστημα των υποχρεωτικών τελών. Αυτό το μοντέλο ήταν μια ευλογία
τόσο για την εκκλησία όσο και για τους ενορίτες μας, επειδή τα μέλη της κοινότητάς μας αποφασίζουν πόσα θα
προσφέρουν στην Εκκλησία με βάση τις ευλογίες τους από τον Θεό.
Σας παρακαλούμε να σκεφτείτε το ενδεχόμενο να εκπληρώσετε τη επιστασία σας για το 2022 καθώς
πλησιάζουμε στο τέλος του έτους.
Η γενναιοδωρία των ενοριτών σαν εσάς έχει τεράστιο αντίκτυπο στις διακονίες της κοινότητάς μας. Για πρώτη
φορά μετά από πολλά χρόνια μπορέσαμε να επενδύσουμε στις διακονίες της νεολαίας και των νέων ενηλίκων και
έχουμε μεγάλα σχέδια για την παλαιότερη γενιά μας που ήταν και παραμένουν οι πυλώνες της κοινότητάς μας.
Είθε ο Θεός να σας χαρίσει πολλά χρόνια και μεγάλη χαρά αυτή την υπέροχη περίοδο των Χριστουγέννων
αλλά και για πάντα.
