GWM Haval H6 2022
By William Leong
Haval is the SUV side of China's Great
Wall Motors, or GWM. It is medium SUV,
the H6 is the top selling SUV in the
world’s largest car market, China, and
has been for a number of years. It has
been subject to continual improvement
and refinement, and the third
generation was released in 2020. What
we see now from this non-
Japanese/Korean Asian manufacturer is
close to what those competitors offer.
Haval tries to keep costs as low as
possible and the H6 sells at about a
$6,000 discounted compare to
competitors such as Toyota Rav4 and
Mazda CX-5 of similar spec levels. It is
up to you to decide if it is attractive, but
in our eyes we think it is a pretty decent
proposition, and this is definitely an SUV
to consider.
The H6 is not about performance
driving. It does a competent job for its
intended purpose. There is a bias
towards a comfort focused ride, with
less tightness in the suspension, and a
bit of bounciness rather than having a
tightly tuned more harsh performance
focus. It is good to drive, handles and
steers well; it brakes well, whether
conservatively in ‘normal’ or more
pressingly in ‘sport’ mode, and is very
spacious.
Externally
Haval H6 has a very well balanced
modern appearance, featuring an
attention - taking hexagonal grill with
crisscross mesh pattern, well done
creasing on the doors and air ducts in
front, nice wheels, overall it looks good.
There are LED Head, Rear and Fog
lights, with a red strip right across the
back, all of these minimalised and very
sleek looking.
The petrol only Haval H6 has three
spec variants, namely 'Premium',
'Ultra', and top of line 'Lux'. The Hybrid
H6 has just 'Lux' spec.
We tested the GT Ultra and the Lux.
The drive-train is either a second
generation 2-L, 4 cylinder, turbo-petrol
engine combined with 7 speed dual
clutch transmission (Note, NOT a CVT!!),
or hybrid combination of 1.5-L,4
cylinder turbo petrol plus battery
electric motor and dedicated hybrid
transmission.
There are driving modes of
Normal/Eco/Sport/Snow, and also the
electrically assisted steering has modes
of 'Light' with more power assist at
lower speed, 'Comfort' for general
conditions and 'Sport' with less assist,
that is more stiffness and feedback at
higher speeds.
These modes function well, with
dramatically more performance in Sport
mode from the 2-L turbo, or much
toned down when the driver wishes to
save fuel.
The Turbo-petrol 2-litre engine works
really well, with plenty of urgency in
Sport mode, and the seven-speed dualclutch
functions very competently. Fuel
consumption is good at quoted combined
values of 2WD-7.4L/100km, 4WD-8.3L/100km
and, Hybrid 5-2L/100km.
