665BMW M240i XDrive CoupeTo drive a fast, compact, driver-focusedBMW coupe, what do you buy today?In the past, your answer could have beenthe 1 Series Coupe or even further backin time, the 3 Series Coupe. Today, it iscertainly not the poised, large, and complex4 Series and not the GT-sized 8 Serieseither.The answer is The All-New M240i xDriveCoupe.The M240i xDrive Coupe, which is allwheeldrive and more modestly powered,is probably the sweetest-driving car of thelot for regular people. It does manage tocapture the essential feeling with moreviolence and flamboyance.The car is considerably larger thanbefore in all areas, but still manageable andrelatively small at 4.5-metres, in an agewhere a 3 Series is 4.7-metres.The 3.0-litre inlinesix – also found in theM340i and various X‘M40i models – finds ahome under that longbonnet, and drivingenthusiasts should notethat this is the smallestsix-cylinder BMW youcan currently buy.I n t h e MPerformance model,the equipment list can be read out as aconstant hum. M has developed/brandedthe: adaptive suspension, sport differential,transmission, brakes, steering wheel, sportseats, 20-inch wheels, and a lot of otherthings.The car drives brilliantly. Firstly it is widerand longer, but the car does not feel toohuge. Secondly, the steering and chassisresponse is very much that of a small car,direct and communicative. Third, it rides verywell for a small, sporty coupe.That sets it up for driver popularity. Unlikesome cars, whose mode shifts engender ascary, schizophrenic personality change, asyou shift from Comfort to Sport, the M240i’scharacter stays the same but it simply goesharder and faster in a pleasingly analog way.To go fast in some cars you need to buildit up slowly. The M240i is happy to take youalong the route to Faster, letting you knowwhat it needs or does not along the way,and it is communicative. An incisive car cansometimes mean it is twitchy, and not easyto drive, but all-wheel drive certainly helpshere. The inline six cylinder’s petrol engine285kW of power and 500Nm of torque onany coupe of these dimensions would bequite a handful.It rides bumps very sweetly, remains unfussedover fast undulations, and cruisesquietly and effortlessly thanks to a fairamount of low-end torque (max torque of500Nm is on tap from just 1,900rpm).And when the tarmac starts to meander,the car is very keen to change direction,even with the adaptive dampers at theirsoftest. Thank the M240i’s near-perfect50/50 weight distribution and low centre ofgravity for that.The nose responds eagerly tothe quick, linear steering, welljudgedsteering weight, andgenerous feedback through therim to keep you clued in on theroad surface below and the stateof the tyres’ grip.Dial things up to SportPlus mode and things getcommensurately more grinworthy.The car’s considerableheft appears to be of noSAMEWAY ISSUE 665 | P. 20 26.08.2022
consequence because it darts and dancesthrough bends like a true lightweight.The car is equally entertaining down thestraights – the 8-speed auto box respondswith instantaneous urgency to paddle-shiftcommands, and the 3-litre straight-6 is puremusic as it howls to its 6,500rpm redline.A century sprint time of 4.3 seconds isthrillingly quick of course, but how it gets youthere is just as exhilarating.The M240i goes quickly but it also slowsquickly – the brakes (4-piston fixed calipersat the front and single-piston floating calipersat the rear) are massively strong.Equally importantly, the pedal feel isreassuringly firm and progressive, allowingthe driver to very precisely meter out thebraking force when hurtling towards a turn,or even for subtly-judged left-foot braking totrim the line mid-bend, if that’s your style.It does not utterly disdain the mundane asa super-car does, and it should be decentlypractical if you have sensible expectations.We cannot tell you much about the rearseats or the boot since nobody was stupidenough to sit in the back, and we were notsilly enough to carry anything sizeable in theboot.
