662Toyota Supra GTSBy William LeongIf you know anything about Toyota's newSupra you know the controversy - it sharesmany underpinnings with the latest BMW Z4.The models were co-developed by BMWand Toyota, and the logic is simple enough. In this day and age, lack of market demandfor a two-seater coupe or convertible makesit hard to justify developing a brand new car. However, both models belong in each brand'scultural identity, so sharing resources tojointly develop the two cars makes sense. As was the case with Toyota collaboratingwith Subaru for its other, cheaper sports car,The GR86.The Supra is Toyota's halo car, whichhas over four generations developed a cultfollowing, helped along with appearances inshows like “The Fast and the Furious”.Let's get the good stuff out of the wayfirst. This fifth generation newly returnedmodel, with a lot to live up to, is undoubtedlyarresting to look at, turning heads anywhere itgoes. It undeniably looks fantastic - squattinglow to the ground, with flowing lines andaggressive exterior shapes, an instant headturner. Its visual presence and distinctionalone is pretty damn special.Slide inside the car and it instantlytransforms into a BMW, ignoring the Toyotabadged steering wheel and digital instrumentcluster. Everything else inside, literallyanything you touch, is BMW.BMW-ness of the Supra also translates toits drive-train. Exhaust sound? BMW. Enginecharacter and power delivery? BMW. Throttleresponse? BMW. Steering feel? BMW – butto source an in-line six engine we're not surethere's anyone better than BMW.Toyota engineers have tweaked thechassis such that the Supra tackles cornerswith great accuracy and responsive, muchmore alert and aggressive. The steeringis sharp and instinctive, nicely weighted, especially in 'Sport'. The front end is eagerto turn in so the car is easy to place throughcorners. Driven hard it will squirm around, rear wheels always eager to break traction; itfeels light. The Supra is 115kg lighter than the Z4, andfeels lighter than its 1,505kg kerb weight. Thewheelbase is 2,470mm, with 1,294mm height,4,379mm length and 1,854mm width. It is afantastic handling sports car - moving acrossthe tarmac gracefully and delightfully. Its aluminium/steel frame has high rigidity, very short wheelbase, wide track and lowweight and centre of gravity, all aiding itsdynamic abilities. The 3.0-litre engine pumps out 285kWof power and 500Nm of torque. From zero -100km/h takes just 4.1 seconds. The Z4 and Supra have different anddistinct characteristics, with the Supra a muchmore focused and capable sports car, verySAMEWAY ISSUE 662 | P. 20 01.07.2022easy to handle and riding well, with extremelyforgiving suspension even in 'Sport' setting -much suppler than the Z4.There is a passable amount of dailypracticality with 296-litres of space beneaththe rear lift-gate, which are 26-litres morethan a Yaris 5-door hatchback.Over decades and model upon modelBMW has consistently built premium, highqualitycars delivering sharp and engagingdriving dynamics, which the Supra benefitsfrom. The car feels premium and high-quality,with modern, sophisticated technology andequipment. You get a lovely engine thatpours out plenty of power. All packaged ina beautiful, comfortable but also really fun todrive car.Yes, it may look and feel German, but thatmeans you get German technology, qualityand precision. For die-hard purists, the BMW-ness of thenew Supra may be too off-putting, but I amwilling to bet nine out of 10 people like it oncethey have driven it - the car is just, better.Delightful to drive and gorgeous to admire, the new Supra definitely still feels like aspecial car - my true opinion. This new Supra absolutely works, and alsofeels that it will age well. Better Toyota haveBMW build this car rather than it doing a halfbakedjob on its halo model.I will admit, this part-German, part-
