Kindness at CKY
During times of crisis, such as a global pandemic where we have collectively faced difficult times,
supporting each other through these rough patches in life becomes increasingly important. We
become more aware of the need to help each other through kind acts, words and deeds. We know that
we will come out stronger on the other side of hard times, but to get through it requires a group effort
calling for extra acts of care, thoughtfulness and compassion towards others in our community and
beyond.
Intermittent school suspensions and being cooped up indoors more often can take its toll on the
physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing of everyone. As we are now more conscious of the
need to promote positive mental health, the 18th edition of the CKY Newsletter shines a spotlight on
Kindness at CKY. The ways in which we can extend kindness to others, not only our family and
friends but to anyone else in need, are countless and have the beneficial effect of lifting the spirits of
the receiver of kindness. Moreover, a virtuous circle of kindness tends to follow, where the sender of
kindness receives such positive feelings from having done a good turn, that it encourages her/him to
continue showing care, consideration and thoughtfulness towards many others.
Sharing the joy of reading with our Primary students
During a visit by the PLK Board of Directors
The start of a new lunar New Year brings with it a variety of resolutions. In this edition of the
Newsletter, our Primary students explain how they have resolved to be kinder in 2021. Some of our
school management team have also told us of small or random acts of kindness that they have
warmly appreciated, as well as what 'kindness' means to them personally. The saying 'Food is the
way to a person's heart' is reflected in the kindness our Primary students have shown towards their
family while making them hearty breakfasts! Reading books and a wide range of literature is a
wonderful way to empathise with other people. In this edition, our Secondary students have reflected
on how an understanding of another person’s perspective is perhaps the first step in showing
kindness towards them by being more conscious of their needs.
As we gradually increase the resumption of in-school classes, the variety of online learning and
extra-curricular activities our students engage in continues apace. In this edition of the Newsletter,
an assortment of activities are featured, including coding workshops, mentorship programmes, our
Special Dress day, and various art projects. Despite changing times, we have maintained our sharp
focus on exploiting good opportunities to learn outside the classroom; the range of activities our
students are actively involved in helps to broaden their experiences and contributes to their personal
growth.
I hope you will all enjoy our virtual Open Day, and wish you a very happy and refreshing Easter
break.
Being Kind in the Primary Section
Some of our students and parents in the Primary section have reflected on how they can
be kinder in 2021, by making resolutions to be more caring and helpful. We hope
everyone will try hard to keep to their kindness resolutions throughout the year, and show
consideration towards other people in a variety of different ways.
Guess what I am selling you? You can call this an intangible cultural heritage. Well,
although it has been here since long, it is not so much a heritage, but a daily practice. But
wait, there is more --- it is one of the most sought after qualities people value. Good news
is, it is better than winning the lottery because it is priceless to receive. Are you buying
it?
If you are scratching your head, don’t worry, it is not limited to the promotional period.
This offer is good for the whole year. It is free to give out!!! Do you want it?
Deal, you got yourself a good deed of kindness.
Kindness comes from an old English word ‘kyndnes’. Back then, it means ‘nation’ and
the meaning evolves over time to what it is today --- being nice and friendly to others.
One might also relate this word to ‘kin’ which means family and/or relatives. The most
common thought that comes into our minds when we think of kindness is probably being
kind to people whom we are related to. Yet, there are also other tiers of kindness: (1) be
kind to yourself (would that be too selfish if you are only kind to yourself/or the like kind
of yours, but not to the others?); (2) be kind to strangers ( e.g Mother Teresa who have
voluntarily dedicated her whole life to strangers in need); (3) be kind to all living
creatures (not only to humans but to animals and plants).
When was the last time you were kind to others? When was the last time you received
kind gestures from the strangers. Did you say a simple ‘good morning’ to a stranger in the
morning that might have brightened up his/her day? Or have you been offered help from
a total stranger that might have saved your day? How about donating blood?
“Kindness is spreading sunshine into other people’s lives regardless of the
weather” (RAKtivist). Kindness has a cyclical effect, it echoes and butterflies to a new
level when one starts showing kindness to the people around them.
What goes around comes around. Who knows, maybe your random act of kindness might
one day wing its way back to you. Let’s start with raising your head with a shiny smiling
beam after reading this article and start giving people next to you the good old freebie.
In 2021 I’ll be kinder by…...

英 ⽂ 有 句 俗 語 : “Step into other people’s shoes.”
Kara Wong 6B ⿈
As we promote a positive culture of kindness at CKY, we asked some of the school management
team to share a few words with the Newsletter about what kindness means to them, and any small
or random acts of kindness that they have warmly appreciated. Their short stories of kindness
should be an inspiration for how we can all make the world a slightly better place by being more
compassionate towards our fellow neighbours.
Appreciated acts of kindness: Receiving a handwritten thank you
card from a graduate to show his appreciation of my support. I
remember only going to enjoy his performance while he was
recording a music audition video, but he very much appreciated me
being there.
Kindness means: Genuine kindness is when you are willing to give
up something which you need more than the person you are
sharing it with. When you may think that you are kind enough to
treat your friend to a meal, think about a beggar who is willing to
give his only bread roll to others. Always remember that real
kindness will require courage and compassion.
Appreciated acts of kindness:
may not deserve it.
Appreciated acts of
Appreciated acts of kindness: When I first arrived at my university in the UK, I
carried two big luggage with me. I took the train from the airport and then
hopped on a bus to get to my college. Being in a new city, I was not sure which
stop to get off (there was no Google Map back then!). Eventually, I got off too
early and arrived at the wrong college with my two big suitcases. Luckily,
another student saw the state I was in and kindly guided me and helped to
carry one of my suitcases all the way to my destination. It was a small but
significant act of kindness by a stranger, one that I remember over 15 years
later.
Kindness means: A selfless act. It is related to altruism if you want to research
the psychology and biology behind it!
Appreciated acts of kindness: When I first arrived in Hong Kong, I hadn’t
yet learnt to check the Observatory each day during the rainy season. I
forgot to take my umbrella one day and, while waiting at the pedestrian
crossing, found myself in a sudden downpour. When I was just about to
make a dash for it, a perfect stranger sheltered me with his umbrella, and
walked with me across the road towards my building entrance. Blessings
to all good Samaritans in HK!
Kindness means: Finding happiness in the care and wellbeing of others.
Appreciated acts of kindness: I really appreciate when a person that I
don't know asks me if my day is going well so far. Even if that day had
not been going well until that moment, this very small thoughtful act will
boost up my mood for the rest of the day.
Kindness means: Kindness is a mark of faith. The believer is gracious,
for there is no goodness in one who is neither kind nor friendly.
Appreciated acts of kindness: I have really
appreciated my sister taking the time to buy me a
kindle since she knows how much I love reading.
Kindness means: When someone takes their time to
do something for someone else without expecting
anything in return
Appreciated acts of kindness: I love it when
students rush to help pick up things when I drop
Teaching Kindness through
The benefits of reading literature are many and varied in its ability to transport readers to
very different places where students can gain a colourful insight into diverse cultures and
times that are worlds apart from their own. Literature also offers its readers a rich array of
characters from whom students can learn. Our students have reflected on how the
characters and contexts they are empathising with during their literature studies have
made them more aware of the need for kindness in our lives.
Emma Bovary – Empathizing with 19th Century
What would you call a woman cheating on her husband?
Something unsavoury, I would imagine.
James Tissot’s “Young Woman in a
Boat” (1870), a painting chosen as
the cover image for Margaret
Mauldon’s translation of Madame
Bovary.
Written in 1856, Gustave Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovary narrates the tale of
Emma Bovary, the desperate housewife of a provincial doctor. Raised on the
romantic novels of her age, she survives on idealised fantasies of an elegant life
rushed with passionate love until she realised the unattainability of her dreams,
and found her life dull in comparison, leaving her achingly disappointed towards
married life. To cope, she commits adultery behind her husband’s back,
entrenches herself deeply in financial debt, until at last the consequences accrued
from her actions become too much for Emma herself.
When I began reading Madame Bovary, I found our tragic heroine inexorably
selfish and pathetic. I despised how she sees marriage and maternity in an angle
of pure vanity, and neglects all moral obligations when they don’t fit her expensive
tastes–she cared for no one but herself.
However, I slowly realised the shocking normality of her character: What first
shaped her way of thinking was her reading and daydreaming about novels of
romantic fancies. As do I and many other people. The only difference is that no
one informed Emma of the absurdity of her dreams, nor provided her with a
healthy method to adjust to reality, which led her to satisfy her hunger on her own.
Jessie Cho 11A
Emma Bovary taught me how to appreciate the world’s evolution of education,
which kept me–a similar daydreamer–more solidly grounded in reality. More
importantly, her tragically oppressed background made me realise the thrilling
progression of contemporary society, where the expanding horizon of opportunity
now allows more females to act upon their interests and passions in a productive
manner.
Perhaps we all ought to show Emma Bovary some kindness, for her fall down the
trap of over-romanticism guided us to leap over it.
In the past term, one of the readers we used in English
lessons was Wonder by R. J. Palacio. This book inspired and
refreshed me, and taught me numerous valuable lessons. Most
importantly, Wonder helped me develop kindness. It reminded me of
the importance of accepting people for who they are, instead of
judging how they look, and showed me how a little kindness can go a
long way.
Wonder’s primary theme is the importance of being kind.
The book gives a realistic look at the frankly brutal reality of how
being kind seems difficult in the real world, showing how people
might bully August, the protagonist, just because of his “different”
appearance. It doesn’t create a nice world for August, but something
more deeply rooted than the sadness conquers and that is the sense of
love and kindness.
August’s teacher taught them a precept--“When given the
choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.” I believe this
quote teaches us that you have to think about others before yourself.
Always being right doesn’t give us satisfaction, yet being kind could
help someone out. At the graduation ceremony, the principle stated,
“If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are,
whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary -
the world really would be a better place." This speech focuses on the
importance of showing kindness in all areas of life, even to those who
appear to be different.
Wonder taught me that it takes so little kindness to make such a big
difference. It taught me how essential it is to be kind to everyone. If
everyone could be more compassionate and empathetic—if everyone
could show more kindness-- the world would be a better place.
Be Kind
Empathy is a way to express your concerns and compassion to
people. You don’t need to be at a certain point in life to express
empathy; it simply shows your awareness towards people. A
child can empathize with their grandparents and a rich person
can empathize with a beggar. Moreover, empathy makes the
true colours of your heart shine and gives another person
motivation and energy to keep on going.
At the time of Blood Brothers, a play we read in Y7 English, the
wealth disparity of Liverpool was devastating. Some people
owned multiple factories while others less fortunate lacked basic
daily hygiene. What we take for granted now was of the highest
standard then, and even today, homeless children wander the
streets of the developing world, hungry, scared. That's why we
donate to charities; we are showing empathy. Like us, Edward
shows empathy towards the poor by offering Mickey a job in his
factory. He also empathizes with his friend by helping Linda
move houses after she has lived with Mrs. Johnston for 5 years.
Edward is a very good example of what friends will do for each
other if they empathize.
Edward, one of the main protagonists in Blood Brothers, has done many good deeds to his
friends and family that show his empathy towards people around him, like giving Linda a house
and giving Mickey a job at his factory. He also gave a lot of people (like the people in his factory)
jobs. I believe that he gives every poor person he knows personally (like Mickey) a job at his
factory. He is like the nice boss that I am sure some people have at work.
Blood Brothers main focus and target may be the wealth disparity of Liverpool, the acts of
empathy from certain characters are hard to ignore. I hope the world empathises more towards
the poor, like Edward did to his poorer friends and family.
Learning Communities
sharing session on
Global education
Learning Community sharing session (Global Education for Teachers)
Five teachers recently conducted a sharing session where they shared insights from the
Global Education for Teachers online course that they completed with UCL. As an IB
World School, building students’ sense of global citizenship and a wider appreciation of
international issues that impact the world is important for everyone in our community.
Below, one of our teachers offers some general advice for how teachers can raise
awareness of global citizenship, and a student reflects on how what they have learnt
during maths class relates to global education.
Global Education - General tips for teachers!
I feel lucky to have joined the course
“Global Education for Teachers” run
by University College London. This
course widened my view about
education and teaching, having
gained especially a great deal of
insight into resources and new ways
to guide my future teachings. Thus, I
think there are a few useful tips for
teachers that can be share:
1. Global education can be
implemented in the teaching of any
subject at school and teachers can
begin with their lesson plans. Open
up different opportunities for
students to connect what they have
learnt to what people are doing
everyday in the real-world. It can
begin first from the local perspective,
b e f o r e c o m p a r i n g w i t h a n
international viewpoint.
2. While encouraging students to
critically think and reflect about the
wider world, teachers should also
recognize that learners are coming
into the classroom from different
backgrounds, so teachers must
consider opinions and responses to
situations from a variety of
perspectives, which may differ from
their own.
Finally, teachers are students too! I
will be encouraging colleagues to
share their thoughts on Global
Citizenship Education issues and as a
whole school we will develop and, in
turn, raise any Global Citizenship
Education learning that is already
taking place to another level.
Hour of Code Workshop
"Hour of Code Hong Kong" is an organisation that offers free one hour coding workshops
to everyone, to prove that coding is not as challenging as it may seem. Through the
lessons, students would also be able to take away important coding concepts so they can
apply them to their daily lives in the future. Since last year, our school has partnered with
Hour of Code, City University of Hong Kong to arrange scratch workshops for CKY Year
4-5 students, aiming to popularise STEM education in our school.
Personally, prior to this Hour of Code workshop, I have only had very little
experience in coding and was worried that I wouldn’t understand what
was being taught. However, after attending the workshop, I have realised
that coding is not as difficult as I thought. In fact, it can be easy and more
importantly, fun! The workshop was very interesting, as it used the “drag
and drop” programming language called Scratch to teach me how to
communicate with the computer. I only needed to give simple instructions
to perform particular functions. Even though I failed many times, I could
repeat the exercise and learn from my mistakes until I produced the result
that I was looking for. At the end, I managed to create a game, which was
very rewarding after an hour of hard work. Now, I’m addicted to it!
If I am going to make a program on Scratch again, I will spend more time
doing the exercises, think thoroughly on what I want to achieve, explore
Scratch more deeply, find a buddy like my brother to discuss and finally
have FUN!
Tiffany Leung 5B
After learning about coding, I was fascinated by the unlimited possibilities
brought up by programming. Therefore, when I was given this opportunity as a
student trainer in Hour of Code, I felt that it is necessary to promote coding at
school, and would like to contribute to the development of STEM education.
We began by planning the content of the workshop and creating workshop
resources, which was much harder than what I had expected, as we had to
design a game that is fun, easy to follow, and involve various fundamental
coding concepts all at the same time. We had to scrap our original ideas
multiple times and design easy solutions for any exploits or glitches in our
game. Although we had encountered some unexpected issues while teaching
and became increasingly nervous, the workshop went rather successfully, and
the positive feedback from the participants really brought up a sense of
accomplishment. By the end of this workshop, not only had we taught the
participants about the basic ideas of coding through Scratch, but we as
trainers also took this opportunity to consolidate our computational thinking
and teaching skills.
Walter Kwong 11C
Page 20
Prior to the workshop, I was rather comfortable with creating custom
bots, websites and general programming. When I was being invited to be
one of the student trainers of this workshop, I initially thought it would be
rather simple and effortless to introduce others to coding. However,
during the planning phase of the workshop, I realised that I was lacking
skills to teach others and being able to carefully devise the lesson plan.
Although I have been increasingly frustrated with having to scrap multiple
ideas, the constant refinement is certainty worth the effort if it makes the
concepts clearer for them to understand. Despite my trembling voice and
technical issues at the start, being able to observe their smiles and the
satisfaction of them understanding the activity gave a strong boost to my
confidence and motivation - to teach them in the most intuitive way.
During the post-evaluation, learning that most of the participants would
like to further extend their pathway in programming gave me a massive
sense of fulfilment. All in all, this course was a worthwhile opportunity for
me to acknowledge that, being a successful programmer does not only
depend on your technical skill set, but being able to deliver and spread
the art of code is arguably even more important.
Google Meets
Discord
Google Meet
MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
YEAR 1 ARTWORK - MONDRIAN STYLE HOMES
In the past year, it became necessary for everyone to spend most of our time at home in order to avoid the
spreading of Covid-19. With this experience, each Year 1 student was encouraged to imagine and create a
drawing of a home in the style of Piet Mondrian, a well-known Dutch artist famous for his use of primary colours
and black straight lines. Who wouldn't love to stay in these Mondrian style homes?
CKY Newsletter
(Class of 2019)
Hi everyone! Michael here, class
of 2019, currently studying in
UCLA. University is a huge and
difficult place to navigate,
especially coming from a tight,
close-knit environment of CKY.
Like a bird with its wing clipped
off, the support system built
around you which you’ve grown
so accustomed to suddenly
disappears. There is nobody to
parent you, nobody to make you
do your work, and nobody to tell
you how to live your life. Clearly,
this could be heaven for some of
you; and for those who look at
this and feel a creeping sense of
anxiety, good. You’re on the right
track.
At the basketball court of UCLA that the d1 team actually play on
Perhaps especially true for
education in the US, studying in a
foreign country takes a lot of
courage. You are forced to “put
yourself out there”, to go out and
introduce yourself to people
proactively like a social butterfly,
something I suppose Hong Kong
students have to work harder to
do. This is the first barrier that I
n e e d e d t o w o r k h a r d t o
overcome. When I first got to LA, I
had no existing friends that I
could rely on. I acutely remember
telling myself “if this is how you
are going to act, you’ll end up with
no friends…” then I took a leap of
faith and tried to chat to
everybody I met. I got really lucky
at orientation and met a really
close friend, and since then
college was much easier.
It could be different from person to person, but I often find lectures and assignment work rather
tedious and mundane. That’s why I picked up new hobbies like music and investing, things that I
know will be useful to me later down the line. There are people who let go of themselves and
indulge in parties and “fun”, but in my personal opinion doing that excessively is a waste of precious
time. Instead of spending your night out and getting intoxicated, why not research new market
trends and maybe earn a quick buck? Instead of spending your time on unproductive things, why
not use that time to upgrade and add value to yourself? Obviously there is a balance to be
maintained there, but my ultimate point is remember to work hard as well as play hard.
CKY’s environment shaped my values to be the person I am today. It created a sense of
accountability for my own behavior, and that you are the driving factor that leads to change, not
other people. Once you are exposed to the college environment, this becomes increasingly true.
You hold the key to your own destiny.
After college, I would love to go into high finance, and perhaps later down the line start my own
fund. A very ambitious dream, but very doable through hard work. Dreams don’t become reality until
you start working, and college is the perfect time to do it. You can either waste your time and never
achieve your goals, or work extremely hard and become who you want to be – what will you
choose?
