6.2 Natural Air & Light
The design lexicon for bringing light and air deep in
the ground is rich, accessible and undervalued
Until modernism, all ancient architectures were using a variety of passive climatic
design solutions in order to produce comfortable spaces throughout the year across
regions and cultures. Being underground, carparks are ideal sites for the systematic
installation of passive and natural light and air design.
Beyond the obvious advantages in terms of sustainability performances, the
naturally ventilated underground spaces are easier to maintain and much more
comfortable. Spaces that are naturally ventilated help dissipate the feeling of entrapment
and claustrophobia that mechanically ventilated spaces often produce.
In addition to passive low-tech design solutions such as light and air canyons, there
are also a wealth of new options to conduct them deep into any construction with light
pipes and condensers for example. The ambition of both sub-estate valorisation and
of the expansion of their programmatic potential makes passive and natural designs
in the underground not only relevant but inevitable.
