5.4 Systematic Underground Surveying
The systematic cartography of the metropolitan
underground is key to the densification and
exploitation of its assets, whether geological or
commercial.
The metropolitan underground is rich in geological, infrastructural, and real estate
resources. The optimisation of the underground relies on understanding where
the opportunities reside, both in relation to above ground activities and to other
underground assets. An abandoned tunnel from a 20th century train station can
become the access to a carpark or a temporary nightclub. The aquifer that makes the
construction of an underground carpark difficult can become a geothermal opportunity
for the neighboring enterprises searching for cheap local cooling solutions.
The mapping of the underground must become systematic and include both
present and future constructions, transports and utility networks as well as geological
resources. The knowledge that needs to be gathered concerns architecture,
urbanism, infrastructure and geology.
Systematic underground mapping is a valorisation project in terms of real estate
assets as much as in terms of quality of life. It is therefore beneficial to owners,
operators, users, service providers and designers of the underground.
Such a project goes against many mapping reflexes and urban principles inherited
from 20th century planners. A strong political will combined with the latest digital tools
will be required to collectively define a reliable mapping standard for the underground
of every city.
