5.3 Digital Mapping
As the extension of the street, the carparks of the
future must be mapped like the street is.
A place that does not exist online does not exist in the mind of an increasing number of
people. This new dependence on online mapping technology is a quiet but fundamental
shift impacting urban design.
The car created a city full of signs that could be consumed while driving. But this is
changing. Finding a carpark – or a parking spot – is already less about finding a sign in
the street than following a path on the app. Whether a private user, a delivery driver
or a taxi drone, the experience of finding a parking spot is part of “finding your way”
through the city. It is a digital experience.
Motorised mobility has been an essential impetus for the digital mapping revolution,
first and foremost through the mainstream accessibility of GPS. Mapping apps
are already a mature ecosystem which has changed traffic management for good and
which has become a second nature for most users, whether drivers or pedestrians.
One of the primary actions to undertake to transform underground carparks is to
put them on the map like the street already is, just as train stations, shopping malls,
bus stops, etc. This mapping is particularly advanced on the Chinese internet ecosystem,
with Baidu amongst others.
