5.2 LEED Estimates for Underground Carparks

Both new and reconverted underground carparks

could achieve the highest level of sustainability

certifications.

Designed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED certification is the

main and most extensively used norm for sustainable buildings. By providing a quantitative

evaluation of the performance of a project in various fields such as energy,

indoor air quality, water efficiency or materials sourcing, LEED has established itself

as a building standard.

Credits are allocated according to the project’s ability to best address the social,

environmental and economic issues, as defined by the USGBC. To gain the LEED certification,

all required credits and a number of optional goals must be met. Higher levels of

performance are granted a higher level of certification according to the following table.

As detailed above, the LEED credit potential for underground car parks lies between 62 and 102 points. Each underground car

park, either new or retrofitted, has therefore the potential of achieving Platinum certification in the LEED standard. Many of the

propositions in this report would contribute to reach this objective.
