Carpark Futures : Opportunities in the Underground

It was only natural that Dominique Perrault wanted to
place his field of expertise at the service of Indigo Group,
through a study of the possible evolutions of this particular
typology of space, in response to changes in mobility,
as well as in uses and lifestyles. Several strategies are
being proposed to address those challenges. It is clear
that tomorrow’s car park will no longer be a simple inert
storage space, but that it will be transformed to integrate
changes in mobility by becoming a place at the service
of users and vehicles. Existing and future underground
car parks will host new programmes: logistics areas
(deliveries, storage), mobility services (maintenance,
recharge), energy management (geothermal, electricity,
water), as well as new offers (services, work, production).
Architecture will undeniably add value to the
underground by bringing natural air and light.
This study on underground car parks for Indigo Group is
an opportunity to broaden the scope of “Groundscape”
architectural principles on a less monumental scale
than that of large public projects, but just as important,
given its potential systematic applications and its many
possible variations. The ambition of a more ordinary
deployment of these strategies in multiple and varied
urban contexts to diversify the programmatic capacity
of the subsoil is an opportunity for Dominique Perrault
Architecture to introduce the concept of “Sub Estate”,
the precious “subterranean real estate”. Indeed, the
topics developed in this study aim to overhaul the
relationship to the urban underground beyond space
and architecture only. Both of these elements need
to be accompanied by innovations in terms of safety,
regulation, mapping and ownership, without which the
architectural and real estate potential of the subsoil
cannot be achieved.
This study is therefore also a call to question the
common perception of the underground space as a
dark and hostile place, and to embrace it as a resource
that extends and completes our world, a nourishing
root system without which the ground level cannot last.
We already foresee the emergence of the age of deep
urbanism.
