4.3 Scenario 02 : Deep Square
The Deep Square is a city square typology where
amenities are integrated underground to open up
the surface level or to service a multi-purpose hall.
The market place is developed firstly for peripheral and regional city centers that
need to restore car access while preserving their sensitive fabric and furthering their
sustainability. The deep square is defined by an engagement with the ground that
concentrates a diversity of utilities and services which keeps the visual footprint of
the project to a minimum.
Simultaneously public infrastructure and public architecture, the construction is
as deep as high. All of its services are integrated into the ground in order to leave the
public square as free as possible. A multi-purpose roof can be added to foster market
activities and city life. The layout facilitates parking optimisation 24/7: the space for
customer car parking on a market day becomes the stalls' storage the rest of the week ;
the delivery and storage of goods is contained within the base which is deep enough
for trucks ; the shops’ energy consumption is reduced through by directly tapping into
the ground's resources.
The deep square addresses both evolving mobility and ecological imperatives
while enhancing city life. It accommodates shorter supply chains requirements of
local producers. It provides functional and flexible facilities for both professionals
and consumers.
