4.2 Scenario 01 : Parking Retrofit
The Parking Retrofit scenario concerns the
reconversion of existing underground carparks,
mainly in dense historic metropolitan areas.
Conceived to respond to rising car ownership in dense urban centers since the 1970s,
underground carpark architecture has not changed much since then, although they are
the most subject to the evolution of contemporary mobility, namely with the reduction
of privately owned cars in favor of new services such as shared mobility, leasing and
last mile logistics. These parkings often feature great reconversion opportunities
because of their prime location below public squares, near historic monuments or
transport hubs.
The main challenge for the reconversion of this typology of carparks are the limitations
in terms of ceiling heights, of structural performance, and of access. Designed
for one specific program through an infrastructural ethos, their architecture leave
little room for other assignations. Such reconversion projects would require the
reinforcement of slabs and their opening at various points to create volumes adapted
to other programs.
Being in the heart of city centers near monuments and squares, these projects
typically welcome a variety of groundscape architectural strategies. On the one hand,
these strategies concern the physical connections of the underground spaces to
the street, public transportation and neighboring buildings through quality openings
and passages that can be either located underground or above ground. On the other
hand, they concern air and light supply of the existing structure through architectural
devices such as light wells and public access canyons.
The programmatic evolution of these reconverted buildings are manifold and are
intricately connected to the surrounding urban context. The integration of a wide
array of mobility services from private vehicles to logistics could be systematised.
They also offer opportunities to neighboring buildings by providing energy solutions
(geothermal energy, etc.) and programmatic extensions (storage, cultural venues,
etc.). If it is possible to envision multi-program reconversions, such projects would
most likely remain grouped by program types.
