3.3 Proximity & Adaptable Parking
The future of mobility infrastructures is convenience.
New mobility practices are marked by a shift towards access over ownership. Services
must be available at all times, in all places, always at hand when they are needed. The
flexibility that this ethos requires is much more immediate and dynamic than before.
It has to improve the urban experience by being second nature, which calls for a new
type of infrastructures.
Proximity Parking
Refers to the establishment of a systematic meshing of
car parks in dense metropolitan areas. One should not
look for a car parks anymore, but one must know that
there is a car park with the services they need which is
near them at all times. Proximity parks would be “mobility
convenience stores” located at every street corner of
cities, with similar geographical distribution as metro,
taxi or ride-sharing stations (potentially containing
them). They could therefore afford to be smaller in scale,
and more connected to the street, as its direct extension.
They would be embedded into avenues, squares, and
would occupy parking spaces of private buildings that
would have been converted to accommodate publicly
available mobility rather privately owned vehicles.
Reversible Parking
Refers to the design principles that enable the conversion
of a parking infrastructure to other uses. Indeed,
the pace of evolution of digitally-enabled services is
extremely fast, with specific demands going boom and
bust within a matters of months. These short timeframes
clash with the slow adaptation of infrastructure and
architecture. Reversible design principles facilitate the
production of durable constructions despite the rapidly
changing programs. When incentivised correctly, it
makes the production of new infrastructures viable
both economically and ecologically, and is particularly
adapted to concession-model exploitation.
