Dense metropolitan centres are the most obvious
sites for underground carparks. They tend to have a
mature urban fabric that was often designed before
the invention of the car. They also have developed
transportation ecosystems with cars, buses, trains and
light mobilities. The traffic in these areas is defined by
a reduced number of privately owned cars and a large
proportion of logistics for both passengers (taxis, etc.)
and goods (delivery, etc.).

Regional cities are urban centers with a single identifiable
center which often corresponds to the historic
heart of the city and its train station. The main particularity
of these urban centers is that the traffic is dominated
by private car owners who are spread on nearby rural
and suburban territories, and whose public transportation
options are limited to public buses and tramways at
most.

New development refer to urban areas built for the
car that are equipped by default with parking through
planning regulations based on their programs (retail,
residential, business, culture, mixed-use, etc.). The
required parking surfaces often lead to their integration
in the architectural design, and are regularly placed
underground in the lowest levels the buildings or even
sometimes extend below the public spaces. They are
mostly located on private land.

Underground carparks are usually implemented in
relatively high-density urban areas. Three dominant
typologies of urban conditions can be identified,
each with its own characteristics.
