2.7 Towards a new model
The underground spaces of tomorrow will
house more than just mobility and utilities.
The arrival of new mobilities will force parking infrastructures to evolve beyond being
simply inert vehicle storage. They will have to become local service providers for a
variety of vehicles that might be owned privately, leased or shared either individually
or as fleets, and of different typologies, mainly cars, vans, scooters, bicycles, with
diverse engines powered with gas, electricity and hydrogen. The default systems
embedded in a carpark are already being rethought for that reason.
Then, this trend in mobility is part the broader optimisation of space in high-density
high-value urban areas in parallel with the search for sustainable solutions. In this
case, underground infrastructures are particularly relevant, especially when they are
already built, underused and ready to be converted.
The carpark of the future will cease to be a closed concrete box to become a site
of connections directed both vertically as an extension of the street level and as an
interface with resources underground, and horizontally by connecting transport lines,
retail space, cultural venues to the infrastructure they need, and also to each other.
