2.5 The Rise of the Deep Street
Since its invention, the modern street has not
only grown higher. It has been layering deeper to
withstand technological advances.
The modern street is a cleared open space made for circulation, delimited by two
facades separating public and private space, and with city utilities embedded in
its floor. The utilities started with sewage, clean water gas, to later incorporate
electricity, subways, phone lines and internet cables. Underground car parks also
belong to this series of utility networks that make daily urban life possible.
The development of carparks below squares and streets has transformed the
archetypical architectural street section. Consequently, it has become as deep as it is
high, with the street floor being as much of a roof as a floor.
The deepening of the street through the construction of underground parking lots in
recent decades realises several urban propositions such as the ones of Eugène Hénard
for Paris or Harvey Wiley Corbett for New York City. However, their visions mostly
prioritised traffic by adding circulation levels, which overlooked the street’s role in
centralising city life. On the contrary, the implicit project of the deep street consists of
embedding as many machines, utilities and services for urban life into the floor in order
to leave the streets and public spaces as free and legible as possible.
