2.3 Place Vendôme - An Archetype
The underground carpark underneath Place
Vendôme re-establishes the historic square as a
pioneer for urbanism.
Thanks to its geometric shape, formed by its continuous facades, Place Vendôme in
Paris is one of the most emblematic prototypes of Parisian planning and a reference
model for modern urbanism. The former Place Royale of Louis XIV was extended by
a multi-storey underground car park in 1970, built by GTM, now Indigo Group. Being
one of the first, one of the largest and most archetypal underground car parks located
under public space, this reinforces Place Vendôme’s position as a pioneering site in
terms of urban planning.
The invisible underground infrastructure frees the surface of the square of parked
cars. It restores its original appearance through the radical transformation of its
section which becomes as deep as it is high. The five floorplates carefully surround
the central historic column and form a 15-meter-deep construction that offers roughly
35,000 m2 of usable surface area, located right under one of the most prized and
protected real estate in the world. Effectively, the street floor of the Place Vendôme
can be compared to the roof of a vehicle warehouse.
