After several years of development, the first mass transformations of the mobility
revolution have already taken place. Internet-enabled mobility services have become
second nature for more and more users. After several years of development, the first

world without a smartphone is difficult to imagine nowadays. Driving is assisted by
computers who participate with safety, efficiency, ecology and parking amongst
others. Private car ownership, the holy grail of the modernist city experience of the last
century, is being challenged by new types of vehicle access that are more convenient,
more affordable and more sustainable. Most importantly, the reign of the combustion
engine is waning with the rise of alternative power sources such as electricity and
hydrogen that will undoubtedly revolutionise infrastructure in the next few years.
With these evolutions taking place, it is only logical to question the future of parking
infrastructures that are so closely related to them. However, the studies and forecasts
in this regard all focus on above ground structures. They almost always overlook the
specific case of underground parking infrastructure, which, as shown hereinafter,
offer particularly relevant opportunities for a range of urban typologies.
