CHIANG MAI
A FESTIVAL WITH HEART
Now in its fifth year, this funky three-day fest
offers music, art and many more fun activities,
all centred on socially responsible and ecoconscious
practices. Every year, a carefully
curated cast of characters take over an idyllic
valley on the southern fringe of Chiang Mai,
transporting visitors to a magical alternate
reality that is both eclectic and community
driven. Four stages cater to a variety of
musical tastes, as well as offering yoga, standup
comedy, handmade crafts and stellar food.
There’s something for everybody – kids too.
Visitors can either camp on site or come and
go as day guests. Unlike its more glamorous
counterparts, Jai Thep is down-to-earth and
focused on the local community. Part of the
earnings will be donated to local NGOs who
are replanting forests and fighting pollution.
The event is kind to the environment thanks
to an elaborate waste-management scheme
and strict no-single-use-plastic policy.
MANDALAY
TWO DAYS OF PRAYER
The Mahamuni Pagoda festival comes out to
shine with the first full moon in the lunar month
on the pagoda to pay homage to its Buddha
image with candles, incense sticks and flowers.
During the day, a traditional “Chin Lone” or
cane ball tournament draws teams from across
the country, while cauldrons of the Burmese
glutinous rice “Htamane” are cooked by men
for everyone to savour.
The mood shifts in the evening when
comedy shows, plays and puppetry take centre
stage. If you happen to be in Mandalay, this is
the best place to explore Myanmar’s heritage –
but be prepared for huge crowds.
When the fury and the fumes of city life get too much, it’s good to remember that
peaceful Khao Yai National Park lies just three hours away from Bangkok.
The best time to experience its misty mornings is between November and
February when the weather is just perfect for outdoor activities. Here are a few
ideas for things to do if you manage to escape.
KHAO YAI NATIONAL PARK
Opened in 1962, Khao Yai was
Thailand’s first national park and is
now the third largest in the country.
Its forests and waterfalls are spread
across 2,168 square kilometres and four
provinces, namely Prachin Buri, Saraburi,
Nakhon Nayok and Nakhon Ratchasima.
Named a UNESCO Heritage Site in
2005, Khao Yai has become a popular
getaway for Bangkokians who want
to catch sight of wild creatures of all
shapes and sizes in their natural habitat.
Apart from great trekking trails, the park
features majestic mountain scenery,
impressive waterfalls, rare wildlife, eyepopping
viewpoints and more.
Entry fees: Foreign visitors pay 400 baht
for adults and 200 baht for children, while
this is one of the most breathtakingly
A TASTE OF THAILAND
Holy Basil Meets Hellish Fire
What started as a lunchtime
favourite has now turned
into a trendy delicacy.
A huge favourite among Thais, Phad Kaphrao
(stir-fried mince with holy basil) is now gaining
a fiery reputation among food lovers across
the world. Once a lunchtime favourite at
street side eateries, this simple dish has now
spawned its own dedicated Kaphrao-only
restaurants all around Bangkok.
Traditionally, Phad Kaphrao comprises
leaves of holy basil stir-fried with either pork
or chicken and is given a fiery kick with a
good dose of sliced green chillies. Nowadays,
the dish has been given a fresh twist with
the addition of assorted veggies, namely
yard-long beans, baby corn, sliced carrot and
even onion. The choice of protein has also
extended to cover beef, squid or prawn.
Creating a dish of Phad Kaphrao is easy,
because its ingredients are simple – minced meat
(or seafood), holy basil leaves, garlic, birds-eye
chilli and seasoning. However, it takes a careful
cook and a hot flame to get the blend of strong
flavours just right. The key is in the distinct
aroma of holy basil, which gives the dish its
perfect balance of herbal subtlety and fiery heat.
Start by pounding a palmful of chillies
and peeling a few cloves of garlic. Set your
pan on medium to high flame, heat two
tablespoons of oil and throw in the chilli
and garlic when it starts to smoke. Stir until
the garlic releases its aroma and then add
minced pork or other meat/seafood. Once
the meat starts cooking, add fish sauce and
sugar. Then turn the flame off and stir in
the holy basil. Turn the mixture until the
leaves soften, before serving it with fresh
rice topped with a fried egg. A duck’s egg is
ideal in this case because its stronger taste
complements the powerful flavours of chilli,
garlic and basil.
A Juicy Powerhouse
Chockful
of nutrients, the crispy,
sweet jujube can do everything from
tackling a cold to cooling you down
on a hot summer’s day.
Crunchy, sweet and tasting something like an
astringent green apple, the jujube has been
around for more than 4,000 years.
Originally from China, the jujube – also
known as the Chinese date – made its way out
of Asia centuries ago. There are at least 400
varieties, but the most commonly consumed
ones are the Li and Lang. Li is large, round and
best eaten fresh, while Lang is pear-shaped and
best eaten when either fully ripe or dried.
Though the fruit typically turns red when ready
to eat, a new type from Taiwan called the Mi Zao
remains green even when fully mature. The fresh
fruit is crisp and sweet, but when eaten dried it has
an aromatic flavour with a soft, chewy texture.
28
When consumed fresh, the jujube is packed
with flavonoids, phenols, antioxidants, manganese
and iron. With an impressive 20 times more
vitamin C than citrus fruits, it also boasts 18 of
the 24 essential amino acids necessary for good
health. The high levels of vitamins and minerals
also help boost the immune system and build red
blood cells, and the jujube is believed to help with
insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, inflammation
and blood pressure. This powerhouse of nutrients
is also considered an adaptogen – meaning it can
“adapt” to the body’s needs and help reduce stress.
In Chinese traditional medicine, the dried ripe
jujube is classified as a warm food and is used to
balance the Qi, to remove dampness, nourish the
blood and strengthen the body. Meanwhile the
dried jujube is considered to be a harmonising
herb that makes ingredients taste better and be
digested more smoothly.
The dried jujube makes for a very tasty snack
and can also be used in a range of both sweet and
savoury dishes, from porridge and smoothies to
cake. Toss five to 10 dried jujube into a Chinese
herbal chicken soup to add more flavour to the dish.
If your recipe calls for dried apples, dates or goji
berries and you’re out – dried jujube makes a tasty
and healthy substitute. Got a cold? Hot ginger tea
spiked with jujube is a great remedy. Hot? Use the
same recipe, but with crushed ice rather than hot
water to cool yourself down.
Biting into the crisp, sugary outer layer and meeting
enchanted by the hint of coconut – especially if it has
been smoked with Thai aromatic candles. For a surreal
taste, chill an Alua before popping it on your tongue.
These heavenly mouthfuls don’t take much to
create. All you need is wheat flour, coconut milk,
sugar, jasmine flavoured water and food colouring.
Many Thai dessert makers are now using natural
food colouring from flowers and fruit.
Butterfly pea flowers give you a purplish blue
if you add a bit of lime juice, while red dragon fruit
produces a sweet pink.
If you’re after a light green, add some pandan
and you also get a pleasant aroma that will have
Richest Museum
For a 2,000-year journey into the Kingdom’s
relationship with cash, head to Bangkok’s riverbank.
In our constant yearning for a brighter future, we often
demolish historic foundations that were built over time by
the hard work and wisdom of our ancestors. Instead of the
wrecking ball, perhaps the ideal way forward is a perfect
balance between the past and the present, one that keeps
history’s riches alive for us to enjoy right now.
Nothing illustrates this “middle way”
better than a royal residence that rose on
the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River
more than a century ago. The Bang Khun
Phrom Palace later became Thailand’s first
banknote-printing facility, but has since
embarked on a new journey. Two years
ago, it flung open its doors to the public
as the Bank of Thailand (BOT) Museum’s
Learning Centre to mark the central
bank’s 75th anniversary.
The latest incarnation of this majestic
building serves as a bridge between the
public and their national bank’s storied
past. The Learning Centre offers a
glimpse into the central bank’s rich
history, responsibilities and challenges
– and into the great minds who were
responsible for steering the country
towards the prosperity and development
we all enjoy today.
Though the grand neo-classical design
of the building is rooted in the genius of
ancient Greece, it also shows how a spark
of age-old creativity can be blended with
the rhythm of modern times.
However, achieving that historyspanning
transformation was no easy task.
Behind the stunning yet practical design of
the BOT Learning Centre lies the ingenuity
of the Creative Crews architecture team.
Staying true to their founding principles
of design, the team treated the former mint
with utmost respect by maintaining the
original elegant structure, yet at the same
time engineering solutions to increase
visitor circulation within its warren of
corridors and halls.
The idea was to open Thailand’s
former mint for all, showcasing the
history of this national institution for as
many citizens as possible. The dream
was given concrete reality by knocking
down walls to create larger public
spaces, offering full access to a gorgeous
riverfront landmark with views to die for.
Even better, the architectural
overhaul preserves the building’s
historical significance and function,
while at the same time improving public
access with a convenient entrance from
the street. A staircase spilling from
the second floor of the building now
channels visitors into the former palace,
an inviting introduction to the openness
that is at the core of the newly revamped
BOT Museum. From the stairs, visitors
get their first taste of the glory of a
bygone era, with a rare unobstructed
and technological achievements. Featured
hospitality history. With 270 metres
of beach to its name and a spacious
property full of well-manicured gardens,
this is a coveted location.
Samui Palm Beach Resort has
dedicated a portion of its beachfront
to the newly remodelled Trade Winds
Restaurant, named for the easterly
winds that have blown shiploads of
exotic spices to these shores to create
a unique local cuisine.
Sit down for a meal here and you
discover the kitchen is expert in blending
southern curries. The menu is nothing
less than eclectic, but the southern-style
Thai food should especially interest
curious travellers.
First-time visitors will quickly
learn that the region’s specialities are
both exceptionally varied and unique.
Take the gaeng phrik pla kraphong
(black peppercorn curry with sea bass)
for instance. Made with both dried
black and fresh green peppercorns,
lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric,
fish sauce, chillies and more, this
pungent pan-fried curry wakes up the
palate with spice then teases it with
wildly complex flavours.
Another star of the kitchen is
khua kling (dry roasted curry), made with
minced chicken or pork. The curry paste
is stir-fried with a little oil or liquid, until
the different spices concentrate and
blend together beautifully.
If sweet and creamy coconut is
what gets your mouth watering, try
the gaeng kathi maphrao on or young
coconut curry. Subtle in flavour, this
rich curry is the southern equivalent of
the famous green curry.
So, let those easterlies blow you to
the Trade Winds Restaurant, where the
authentic taste of the South is waiting.
CHECKED IN: SAMUI
TASTED: KOH CO BEACH
RESTAURANT
For visitors to the tourist haven of Koh
Samui, one of the biggest challenges is
finding the perfect dining spot, though
the chances of munching on something
horrid are pretty slim in a country famed
for its culinary triumphs.
Of course, we also love the sweet
satisfaction of unearthing that hidden
gem in a beautiful location. But if you
want to avoid a long and possibly
fruitless hunt, just head to Koh Co
Beach restaurant.
Located in the front of Eden Beach
Bungalows on Bophut Beach, this
stylish, casual all-day eatery is a site
you’ll be glad you discovered. An
intimate dining area with a bar and
a handful of bamboo tables, Koh Co
Beach serves up a romantic atmosphere
with dim lighting and driftwood accents.
Swaying palm trees and the sound of
lapping waves complete the picture.
But no matter the ambience,
a restaurant is only as good as its
food. Koh Co Beach scores high here
thanks to French and Thai chefs who
artistically blend savoury Western
flavours with the zingy, exotic spices
of the East. At the mild end of the
spectrum are delicate creations like red
peppers with mayonnaise-y anchovy
cream, served on crisp baguettes.
Each bite blends the spiciness of the
mustard, the saltiness of the anchovies,
the savouriness of garlic and the
sweetness of peppers.
If you’re looking for a punch,
opt for yum som o or pomelo salad,
where sweet, ripe chunks of pomelo
meet crispy shallots, fresh prawn, and
coriander with a sauce of sweet chilli
paste, lime, coconut milk, fish sauce and
sugar. Highly recommended.
Fish lovers, meanwhile, will have
nothing to complain about if they
order a plate of tuna salad: a sesame
encrusted seared tuna steak perched
on a pile of juicy greens alongside a
slice of juicy mango. A subtly sweet
and savoury dressing finishes this
instant classic with a tropical twist.
Wisdom
Back from a decade-long pilgrimage to fashion’s
holiest shrines, Tipayaphong Poosanaphong is
dazzling Thailand with a style all his own.
Thai fashion designer Tipayaphong
Poosanaphong, in blue shirt
and slacks, greets us with a
broad smile as we step into his
three-storey atelier in Bangkok’s Sai
Mai district. Behind him, mannequins
shimmer in couture gowns of satin, silk
and chiffon studded with sequins, beads,
faux pearls, lace and plenty of ornate
embroidery – his signature.
“Today I chose to dress in blue to match the signature shade of
Bangkok Airways,” grins Tipayaphong, the founder-cum-designer of Tipa
Atelier brand.
Immediately we spot the dress in which actress Peeranee “Matt”
Kongthai drew gasps when she swished down the red carpet for her 2015
hit TV series “Kha Bodin” (The King’s Servant). The elegant figure-hugging
gown is designed to evoke the wearer’s sensuality in sheer panels overlaid
with black embroidered geometric patterns inspired by the motifs found
on ancient Ban Chiang pottery in Thailand’s Northeast.
Other mannequins show off wedding gowns in subtle hues of ivory and
cream, dripping like intricate lace nets with hand-stitched embroidery,
crocheted flowers, pearls and asymmetric braids for figure-flattering
silhouettes that capture a fresh but classic style.
Adjacent is a huge built-in cabinet showcasing more flights of
Tipayaphong’s fancy. Whimsical and funky, the ready-to-wear hat
collections are fashioned from a variety of materials and techniques
a variety of
different materials
and techniques.
Below
Tipayaphong’s haute
couture creations
embody classic
Western styles with
attention to details.
ranging from felt, sequined lace,
feathers, hemp, toquilla straws,
lipao vines and carved wood to
unusual accents like sandalwood
flowers and butterflies that have
died naturally.
His haute couture creation
embodies classic Western style
with attention to detail born from
his time in Paris training with big
names like Emanuel Ungaro and
Pierre et Gilles.
His decade-long apprenticeship
in Paris, however, started not
as a fashion designer but as a
hairdresser.
“My aunt was a hairdresser and
I followed her path by studying
at Manusak Hairstyling School
in Bangkok. After that I had a
chance to work with masters like
Kai (Somporn Tirin) and Looknam
(Sukhon Srimarattanakul). To
sharpen my skills, I decided to
further my studies by attending
the two-year course in styling
at Formul’a Academie Privee
de Coiffure in Paris in 1994. To
become a professional hairdresser
in France, however, I needed
another two years of training and
the cost was too steep for me at the
time. I had to find a way to stay in
France and further my knowledge
at lower cost.”
On the recommendation of
a friend, Tipayaphong managed
to enrol in a three-year diploma
at the L’École de la Chambre
Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne
(ECSCP), a government institution
that guided him through every
process of dressmaking, from
sewing and stitching to weaving
patterns with thread. This school
is where he discovered his
new passion.
“I realised that I was falling in
love with dressmaking. The work
process required concentration and
allowed me to calm down. Plus,
seeing my pieces being worn by
models made me very happy,” he
says with a gleam in his eyes.
During the internship,
Tipayaphong got a precious chance
to study at the atelier of Emanuel
Ungaro and after graduating, he
applied there to become second
assistant to the chief artisan of
evening gowns.
“Working at Atelier Ungaro was
my greatest experience. I learned
different techniques from senior
craftsmen and artisans, such as
how to stitch a very thin sheet of
lace with gauze while hiding the
threads, or how to make a petticoat
with an 80-metre-long sheet of
fabric. I wanted to become an
all-rounder, so I opened myself to
every learning experience and my
senior colleagues kindly revealed
their tips and tricks.”
Having passed the petticoat
challenge, Tipayaphong graduated
to crafting pants, skirts, tops and
dresses – even turning his budding
talent to hand-sewn swimsuits.
“The acid test awaiting
all acolytes of Ungaro is the
challenge to create a white dress
and a silk velvet gown. To do a
whole white dress, you have to
be very attentive. Hands must
be washed every time you work,
while nails and lips must be left
unpainted. But working with velvet
is the toughest. It’s important to
be consistent, which means cutting
all the cloth with the nap running
in the same direction. It’s hard
to correct once it’s cut, sewn and
seamed. The pressing is also an
intricate technique,” he explains.
After his three-year learning
curve at Ungaro, Tipayaphong
moved on to work as a costume
designer for Pierre et Gilles in
2003. But in his spare time, he
took a three-month course in hatmaking
at the Lycée Professionnel
Octave Feuillet. Among his big
successes while working with
Pierre et Gilles from 2003 to 2006
was a costume he designed for
the 2004 Fête de la Musique, a
nationwide celebration of music.
Tipayaphong buzzes with the
energy of a person constantly eager
to learn new things. While working
in Paris, he also earned a diploma
in jewellery-making from the
School of Visual Arts in New York
in 2004.
“By 2007, when I had earned
enough and gained enough experience
in different fields, I decided to return
home with the aim of opening my
own fashion house. My first collection
under the Tipayaphong Poosanaphong
label was presented at Elle Fashion
Week in late 2007, at the same time
my fashion store was opening at
Siam Centre. People were astonished
when they found out who I was
and where I came from,” says
Tipayaphong, who still travels
back and forth between Bangkok
and the French capital, where he
works as a guest lecturer at the
fashion school IFA Paris.
From the street and ready-towear
outfits sold at Siam Centre,
he expanded to haute couture
collections presented in the Code
10 Zone in Siam Paragon. Economic
uncertainty and his desire to
concentrate on couture fashion
saw him scrap the ready-to-wear
line in 2014 and establish his new
atelier at the current location. The
label was reborn under the name
Tipa Atelier and it quickly found
favour among Bangkok celebrities
and jetsetters.
Tipayaphong has two workshops
of five artisans – one next to
Sai Mai district where patterns
are created and cut, and the
other in Kanchanaburi province
where traditional hand-crafted
hoop embroidery is made. One
of his couture dresses can take
anywhere between three and six
months to complete.
“Most of my clients for couture
gowns are Thais who love classic
luxury style blended with playful
hand-crocheting and embroidery
accented with sequins, beads,
crystals and semi-precious stones.
However, hats are not popular
among Thais, so my clients here
are mostly from Hong Kong,
Singapore, Japan, France and
England,” he adds.
Tipayaphong no longer
showcases his collection on the
runway, but fashionistas can see
what’s new in his window by
glancing at his Instagram
(@tipayaphong) or visiting
www.tipayaphong.com.
Gracing his social media
showcase right now is the
autumn/winter 2019 collection,
based on the concept of “I Miss
Notre Dame” and featuring
evening and wedding gowns
ranging from close-fitting
silhouettes to ruffled layers on
chiffon and silk satin, touched off
with elaborate headdresses. The
creations are modelled in moody
black-and-white portraits shot
against the backdrop of Notre
Dame Cathedral, undergoing
a dramatic rebirth after being
ravaged by flames.
CAMPING
Kings
for
Words & Photos Marisa Marchitelli
First pitched by 16th century
monarchs, glamping has
come a long way in the past
500 years.
From luxuriously furnished
yurts to 7-star safaris,
and even a resurgence of
the ever-retro Airstream
trailer, glamping takes you
back to nature without having
to sacrifice any of the modern
amenities we hold so dear.
“Glamping” – a 21st-century blend
of “glamour” and “camping” – takes
our love of the outdoors to levels of
decadence well beyond anything found in
the average tent. The term may be new,
but the concept isn’t. Archaeologists
recently uncovered evidence of furnished
dwelling structures supported by poles
dating as far back as 10,000BC. Nomadic
cultures such as the Mongols continued in
this vein with the yurt, a sturdy domelike
construction that is as easy to erect
as it is to dismantle, and offers plenty of
protection from the elements. In the 13th
century, Emperor Genghis Khan ruled
from a large and suitably opulent yurt,
perhaps paving the way for glamping
centuries later.
OFF-BEAT
Europeans lifted this trend to
new levels of decadence. In the
16th century, the Earl of Atholl
arranged a palatial camping
experience in the Scottish
Highlands for the visiting King
James V and his mother. He
pitched grandiose tents, furnished
with luxuries from his castle and
outfitted with all the creature
comforts. At around the same
time, King Francis I of France
hosted his English counterpart
King Henry VIII at the “Field of
the Cloth of Gold” – a tented
summit in northern France.
This was perhaps the most
ostentatious glamping event in
history, with fountains spouting
red wine dotted among some
2,800 exquisitely decorated
marquees. These canvas palaces
soon became a common sight on
the battlefields of the expanding
Ottoman Empire, before being
adopted by the British, the French
and the Dutch. The furniture and
decorations crafted for these
campaigns are still treasured by
collectors across the globe.
Glamping as we know it today
was the inadvertent result of the
financial crisis of the late 1990s.
Holidaymakers in Europe were
compelled to opt for cheaper
“staycations” closer to home
and sought affordable yet exotic
alternatives to mainstream
By 2016, the term “glamping”
had entered the modern lexicon
with rising international appeal
and increasingly large price tags.
Research shows that the boutique
THE LOOP RIDE
Life in the
Slow Lane
Words & Photos Ron Emmons
The ideal way to get a
taste of real daily life in
Myanmar is by riding the
Yangon Circle Line train.
Most of us lead hectic
lives, but then we also
need time out to “stop
and smell the roses”.
On a recent trip to Myanmar, I decided
to do just that and hopped on the
Yangon Circle Line to do some peoplewatching
– all for just 200 kyat (about
15 US cents).
The 46-kilometre route, which runs in a north to
south loop, passes through 39 stations and takes about
three hours to complete. However, I’ve heard that the
line is being upgraded and that at present it is not
possible to go right round the Circle Line. My quest to
learn more about this upgrade took me to an office –
straight out of Dickensian times – on the top floor of
the Yangon Central Railway Station, where scribes were
hidden behind mounds of yellowing paperwork, with
not a computer in sight. Ceiling fans were motionless
and birds flitted in and out of the open windows.
Central Station.
Kyaw Moe Lwin, the assistant
manager for Myanmar Railways,
said the upgrade is being done in
two phases. The first, financed by
the government, entails civil work
like new platforms, footbridges,
drainage and level crossings, which
should be completed by mid-2020.
The second phase, involving newer
trains and automated signalling, is
being financed by Japan and should
be completed by around 2022.
Once that is done, more trains
will run daily, and journeys will
become significantly shorter –
cutting an hour off running the
entire loop. He added that the
station itself, which dates back to
the ’50s and is one of Yangon’s
most iconic buildings, is also slated
for major redevelopment.
The following day, I join tour
guide Myat from Yangon Urban
Adventures, US traveller Elana and
Katsu from Japan to experience the
ride. We board the train after 9am,
so it isn’t too crowded, and our
life in the slow lane begins. After
a juddering clunk, the train chugs
sedately out of the city, stopping
every few minutes to let passengers
on and off.
The carriages don’t appear
to have changed much since the
line began operating in 1954,
apart from wooden benches being
swapped for ones made of fibreglass
and the addition of some recycled
coaches from Japan that boast
cushioned seats.
The lack of air-conditioning,
functioning toilets and doors
is probably why the ride is so
cheap. It also explains why most
of the passengers are from the
lower-income bracket, with the
occasional curious foreigner like me.
Presumably office workers prefer to
travel on the newer, air-conditioned
buses, despite Yangon’s notorious
rush-hour traffic jams.
Gradually the high-rise blocks of
glass and concrete in the city centre
Many passengers sit cross-legged on
the benches or stretch out to sleep,
lulled by the rhythmic clickety-clack
of the wheels.
give way to single-storey, wooden
houses in the suburbs, with the train
rumbling past tea houses, noodle
shops, temple decoration workshops
and vegetable gardens. Farmers can
be seen standing knee deep in lush
fields and the rural traffic stops at
manually operated level crossings or
for red flags waved by railway staff.
Our attention isn’t always fixed
on what’s happening beyond the
window, as the constantly changing
cast of characters on board is just as
entertaining. Many of the passengers
sit cross-legged on the benches
or stretch out to sleep, lulled by
the rhythmic clickety-clack of the
wheels. Others chat or nibble on
snacks, while mothers feed their
babies and teenagers thumb the
screens of their mobile phones.
I quickly realise that people
in Myanmar love their snacks:
vendors who wander through the
carriages are doing a roaring trade
in everything from boiled eggs,
iced lollies, slices of watermelon
and avocados to cakes and little
betel-leaf wraps to chew on. There
is even someone offering to tell
people’s fortunes for 500 kyat (33
US cents).
Rules say peddlers are not
allowed to sell their wares on
the train, yet they are generally
tolerated. Each seller uses a
distinctive call to advertise their
wares, and the betel vendors appear
to be particularly popular.
After about an hour and a half,
the train grinds to a halt where the
northern stretch of the line is being
upgraded. All along the track, we
can see workers digging trenches for
new drainage systems, laying bricks
for platforms and shovelling stones
to lay new sleepers and tracks. There
is not a single machine to help them,
which explains why the upgrade is
taking so long.
We hop off the train and stroll
with bamboo shoots, and huge
make for some great photographs.
However, we have to leave
quickly to hail a taxi to Pa Ywet
Seik Kone station on the east of the
circle to catch a train back.
Despite being nowhere near
downtown Yangon, we find ourselves
caught in a traffic jam and miss the
train at this station, but thanks to its
Even riding some of the circuit is an eye-opening
window on the Myanmar way of life.
leisurely pace, we manage to catch
up with it at the next.
Once on board, we slip back
into the slow life, with a new set of
passengers and vendors to watch.
This time, the entertainment is
provided by a couple of energetic
youngsters trying out their kung-fu
mums call a halt to the action for
take the Circle Line each day.
We wrap things up with a tasty
agree that our encounters on the
train made the trip worthwhile.
Though it’s quite possible to ride the
informative commentary brought
the scenery to life. And while it is not
yet possible to complete the loop in
a single journey, even riding some of
the circuit is an eye-opening window
on the Myanmar way of life.
Before leaving the city, I visit the
Yangon Heritage Trust and speak
to programs manager Rupert Mann
about the role this circular railway
will play in the future of Yangon,
which the Trust hopes will become
one of Asia’s most liveable cities.
“The upgrade is a welcome
development, as it will help ease the
city’s traffic problems. If possible,
we want to avoid an elevated railway,
as it will obscure the view of some of
The hidden treasures and transformations of Bangkok’s Chinatown
are finally accessible by rail.
Trains are now the quickest and greenest way to get around
Bangkok. That’s all thanks to the MRT’s Blue Line, which
has extended westwards from Hua Lamphong MRT station
through historic districts, opening a new gateway to Bangkok’s
Old Town. Visitors now have three MRT stations to get to fascinating
neighbourhoods where tradition jostles with transformation.
WAT MANGKON MRT STATION:
LOST AND FOUND IN CHINATOWN
Dominated by scarlet walls splashed
with dragon and phoenix motifs,
Wat Mangkon MRT station is a
vivid introduction to Bangkok’s
Chinatown. The station is named after
Bangkok’s largest Chinese temple,
which sits just around the corner.
Wat Mangkon is certainly worth
visiting for a quick dose of serenity
before you venture forth into the
hustle and bustle.
A step away from the station’s
Exit 1 is Plaeng Nam – a small alley
that links Chinatown’s main arteries
of Charoen Krung and Yaowarat. In
bygone days, the lane was little more
than a dumpsite, earning the name
Trok Ma Nao (Rotting Dog Strip)
for its pungent stink of carrion.
Since then, the alley has undergone
several transformations and these
Don’t be misled by these grand old relics:
Bangkok’s historic quarter is now a hipster
haunt, brimming with bars, breweries, cafés
and interesting shops.
days it is the best place to find
Chinese musical instruments,
lanterns and even interesting
places to eat. The changes are part
of the gentrification of Plaeng Nam
and the rest of Chinatown brought
on by the new MRT stations.
From Yaowarat Road, the small
alley of Yaowa Phanit takes you to
Song Wat – a historic byway running
alongside the Chao Phraya River.
In its heyday, Song Wat was a
“spice road” where pepper, cinnamon
and various other herbs and spices
were hoisted off boats and piled
into warehouses. For reminders
of Song Wat’s prosperous years,
look out for architectural landmarks
like the Peiing Building, a venerable
and baroque Chinese school, and
the opulence of Seng Huad Building
with its elaborate woodcarvings.
But don’t be misled by these
grand old relics: Bangkok’s historic
quarter is now a hipster haunt,
brimming with bars, breweries,
cafés and interesting shops. A good
example is the F.V Café, which serves
cold drinks and juice made from the
unusual fruits and herbs that grow in
the premises’ cool, artistic interior.
Chinatown is Bangkok’s most
hectic neighbourhood. It makes for a
perfect urban adventure, where half
the fun is getting completely lost and
finding yourself right in the middle of
a well-kept secret.
Wander into the historic riverside
community of Talat Noi, and you
will find So Heng Tai Mansion.
This centuries-old house was built
in traditional Hokkien style using
golden teak and traditional Chinese
techniques. However, the landlord
has turned the courtyard into a scubadiving
pool and will usher you through
the doors to enjoy a cool glass of
juice and the rich Chinese architecture.
A stone’s throw from So Heng Tai
Mansion is Baan Rim Nam – where
the owner has transformed a rundown
warehouse into a lively bar.
With its cool river breeze and view
of the Chao Phraya, this place is a
hidden treasure. Staring out over
the water with the city’s roar just a
distant murmur behind you, this is a
wonderful place to gossip while you
enjoy a beer.
Also, good food is never far away
in Chinatown.
El Chiringuito, an atmospheric
Spanish bar, brings a slice of Madrid
with piles of tapas, chorizo pizza,
croquettes and homemade sangria.
Drooling over Spanish snacks might
seem out of the place, as others
are slurping wonton soup and egg
noodles, but you’re in Chinatown,
where nothing is impossible.
SAM YOT MRT STATION: COLONIAL
ARCHITECTURE HINTERLAND
Unlike its fellow Chinatown stations,
Sam Yot MRT is prettier on the
outside than within. Located to the
west, the station sits in one of the
city’s oldest districts – and once its
liveliest neighbourhood.
With its wall-to-wall Chinese
shophouses in European style,
Sam Yot neighbourhood looks at
first glance like a hinterland of
colonial architecture, even though
western powers never managed to
gain a foothold in Siam.
Opposite Sam Yot Station is the
grand Cacha Bed Heritage Hotel. This
architectural treasure was established
around 1900 in Victorian style for
members of the Thai royal family.
For a taste of Bangkok’s days gone
by, you could bed down here in the
hotel also hosts an art exhibition –
where local and international
artists take turns to impress and
challenge aficionados.
A short walk away is Suan
Rommaninat Park. Once upon a time,
it was Khlong Prem Prison, which no
one wanted to enter. Now it’s a public
park – where you can get in and out
for pleasure not punishment.
Sam Yot MRT Station is also the
portal to historic Chinatown icons
like Wat Suthat, the Giant Swing and
the Hindu Temple. And when hunger
strikes, it’s also home to a promising
food scene.
Not far from the Giant Swing is
SANAM CHAI MRT STATION: IN THE
HEART OF OLD BANGKOK
Designed by national artist Pinyo
Suwankiri, Sanam Chai MRT station is
a destination in itself. Stepping above
ground, it’s also nice to know you’re
not far from the Grand Palace, soaring
Buddhist temples and heritage buildings.
The platform is inspired by the Palace
throne hall and comes adorned with
ornate columns and motifs.
Wat Pho and the Reclining Buddha
are about five minutes away on foot,
while the main entrance to the Grand
Palace and Temple of the Emerald
Buddha is a 20-minute stroll. If
you suspect these attractions will be
overcrowded, head out from Exit 2
to the temple of Wat Ratchabophit
to bathe in the tranquillity.
Inspired by the grand buildings that
King Rama V saw on his trip to Europe,
the chapel hall of Wat Ratchabophit
melds Gothic architecture with the
traditional Thai gable.
Sanam Chai MRT station
is a precious new gateway to
Bangkok’s heritage and cultural
landmarks, which could
previously only be reached via
unscrupulous tuk tuk and taxi
drivers. Now everyone can explore
the city’s palaces and temples
all day long. To end the day in
style, make a beeline for the Eagle
Nest Bar, a riverside watering
hole on Maha Rat Road. There,
watch Bangkok’s tallest pagoda
light up in the dark. The Temple of
Dawn is, ironically and magically,
more beautiful at night.
Eagle
Nest Bar บนถนนมหาราช ชมความงาม
Ask any Thai to describe their outlook on
life and one word is bound to come up –
“sanook”, which can be loosely translated
as fun.
A stroll around Bangkok’s oldest neighbourhood
offers “sanook” around every corner, with tradition
and trendiness sitting side by side on streets that
hug the Chao Phraya riverbank. Many of the heritage
buildings have been turned into boutique hotels or
posh cafés and restaurants, yet you can still hear
Chinese songs and chants flowing out from venerable
shrines nearby.
Amid locals and old markets going about their
daily business unchanged for decades, there’s a
chance you’ll come upon beautiful graffiti with the
paint barely dry. If you’re in Chinatown during the
annual Vegetarian Festival in October, treat yourself
to some Chinese opera at the Chow Sue Kong shrine
in Talat Noi.
The riverside community is bustling with life,
especially when night falls and restaurants and bars
light up the streets. Highlights include the family-owned
noodle stall where you can play board games with other
diners, or a coffee-and-dessert hangout disguised as
flower shop in nearby Soi Nana in Chinatown.
While time seems to fly in the hustle of modern
Bangkok, its oldest riverside neighbourhood offers
a taste of life taken slow and “sanook”.
MICHELIN DIGS DEEP IN THAILAND
The third edition of the Michelin
Guide Thailand has finally been
unveiled along with the names of the
winners of Michelin stars and Bib
Gourmands. It confirms that the socalled
locavore movement, powered
by locally sourced ingredients, is the
new star of Thailand’s foodie scene.
Of the 282 dining and 74 lodging
establishments featured in the new guide,
five are awarded two stars, 24 one star
and 94 handed Bib Gourmands. Two
restaurants have entered the Michelin
constellation with one star apiece:
R-Haan,where royal Thai cuisine meets
fresh, top-notch ingredients; and Sorn,
where traditional southern Thai cuisine
is lovingly preserved and crafted from
sustainably sourced ingredients.
The Bib Gourmands go to 94
establishments spread across Bangkok,
Chiang Mai, Phuket and Phang Nga.
Hence the list digs into the country’s
culinary core and takes food lovers off
the tourist taste track. guide.michelin.
Crystal-clear waters, white
SURFING ON LAND
A GOLDEN SIGHT ON SEA SHORE
You may just find a new best friend when
you visit Samui’s tiny neighbouring island –
Koh Madsum – or “Pig Island”. The place
got its name thanks to its new inhabitants
– large adorable hogs. Visitors can interact
with the pigs in an open, natural setting
thanks to thrice-weekly trips to the island
run by GoJo Tours, in partnership with
Lub d Koh Samui.
The trips also feature a stop for
snorkelling and swimming off the coast
of Koh Taen, as well as hiking, kayaking
and boat jumping. A day spent in the
crystal-clear waters of the Gulf is made
unforgettable by an encounter with
TAKE YOUR TASTEBUDS TO TOKYO
Sedo Izikura in Phuket Town catches
the eye with its artistic murals, esoteric
Japanese figurines and stylish posters.
The Tokyo-boho atmosphere is thickened
with the addition of a quirky music playlist,
but its secret recipe for surviving Phuket’s
cutthroat restaurant scene lies elsewhere.
The open kitchen injects the addictive
ingredient which has hooked Phuket locals
in droves.
Its slow-cooked traditional homemade
ramen served with super-tender braised
pork, pork belly and hard-boiled egg is
the star, while its barbecued chicken
yakitori and donburi Japanese rice bowls
are a true taste of authentic Japan. For
an extra dash of authenticity, wash ’em
down with a glass or three of sake. 7/1
DUMPLINGS DOWN THE DECADES
For dim sum aficionados, Phuket Town offers a feast of
authentic flavours, mainly thanks to the generations of
Chinese-Thais who have made the island’s capital their home.
Though dim sum joints are sprinkled around the city,
few can boast their bite-sized treats are freshly made daily.
Step up Boonyarat. This veteran of the restaurant scene has
been serving up fresh dumplings since 1917, and you can
easily tell the difference. Here the dim sum skins are firm
and the flavours deep and rich. Apart from favourites like
salapao (steamed rice buns) and shrimp, crab and pork stuffed
bites, you might also want to try the stewed pork short ribs.
THE ORIGINAL ISLAND COFFEE
The aromas of Phuket’s modern coffee
culture strengthen by the year, but still
nothing beats the caffeinated potency
of its original roaster, the 1958-vintage
Hock Hoe Lee. Along with steaming cups
of its special-recipe java and deliciously
brewed iced concoctions, the café also
serves up cold-pressed juices, plus sinful
treats like fried chicken
and waffles, eggs Benedict,
and fantastic breakfast sandwiches with
thick, buttery bread. For the healthconscious,
it offers acai and other
blended fruit bowls sprinkled with nuts
and fresh berries. 28/9 Wiset Rd., Rawai,
