Given that one of the first things Thai people ask each other
when they meet up is “Have you eaten yet?”, it is clear the
nation is extremely passionate about its food. Want to know
how good a Thai restaurant is? Don’t look at the menu, the
decor or even the prices. Look at the number of people inside.
That’s your quality indicator.
Tom Yam Kai Wan Noodle is one of these restaurants: very
small, with no air condition and looking like a street food stall.
But it serves the most delicious noodle soup in town!
STORY
Sak Yant
Thailand’s Traditional Tattoo Revival
泰 国 传 统 纹 身 的 复 兴
Tattoos are popular across the world, amongst young and old, to remember a
loved one, stand out in the crowd, remind the individual of an important personal
intention, or simply as a piece of beautiful body artwork.
Fascinatingly, the art of tattooing is an age-old practice in
South East Asia steeped in tradition, mysticism and meaning.
Known in Thailand as “sak yant”, tattoo work is traditionally
done caringly with a bamboo rod and plant based ink, either
by a Buddhist monk or an ajaarn (teacher) who has been
trained and is committed to Buddhist precepts. Sak yant’s are
imbibed with meaning. The most common tattoos symbolise
strength, protection and power. Historically, tattoo’s were
given to soldiers before war to protect them and encourage
them as they defended their lands. Tattooed warriors can be
seen in temple murals such as Wat Nairong, Bangkok.
Although popularly understood as a Buddhist tradition,
sak yant is actually an intriguing blend of animism, early-
Hinduism and Buddhism. Animism is a belief system of many
indigenous peoples across the world, including South East
Asia, which accepts that everything in nature has a spiritual
essence. If nature spirits are disrespected then they may do
harm. This belief still plays an important role in tattoo traditions
in South East Asia.
The century old tattoo tradition was popular across Thailand,
Laos, Cambodia, Eastern Burma and Southern China until
the 20th century. With the advent of modernization, Christian
missionaries and later Communist movements in the region,
the practice started to die out. In Thailand it continued to be
practiced in rural areas, however city folk became increasingly
disinterested.
Interestingly, it took a Hollywood
celebrity to raise the profile and
popularity of the sak yant! In 2003,
Angelina Jolie came to Thailand and
had her first sak yant tattooed on her
left shoulder blade. This has increased
its popularity amongst Westerners
seeking out tattoo masters on their
travels.
A local Chiang Mai artist remembers
that his great grandfather had sak
yant all over his body, including a
traditional tattoo in which the top of his
legs were covered like a pair of shorts
that was ‘beautiful’. He muses that in
the late 20th century Lanna culture
has been less a part of daily life. He
reflects with his friend that despite
the increase in popularity, it is relative
compared to the extensiveness of the
practice centuries ago. Many young
Thai people don’t get sak yant these
days as it is quite painful and there
are many Buddhist precepts that
need to be followed if it is taken with
full understanding and sincerity. For
example, not being allowed to have
too many beers.
However, for those interested in the
sak yant revival, there are a number
of tattoo masters across Thailand
that keep the tradition alive. There
are even dedicated tour companies!
A number of tattoo parlors can also
replicate designs similar to that of a
sak yant but these artists do not follow
the codes, or understand the deeper
meaning so it is just like getting a
regular tattoo (read article page 18).
8 9

The process of obtaining a sak yant is ritualized, and
only those tattoo masters (monks and trained ajaarns) that
imbibe and fully understand the deep essence of its meaning
can pass on the qualities to the receiver of the tattoo. The
process of getting a sak yant requires deep conversation in
which the artist chooses a tattoo for you, a series of prayers,
the tattooing process itself, and additional prayers and
offering ceremonies. It is a very deep and involved process
filled with meaning, ritual, and elements of magic. A recent
receiver of a sak yant, explained that he felt “blessed” by the
whole process, and it was incomparable from receiving his
regular tattoos.
These days a metal rod is used, based on the traditional
bamboo design. The process is still the same. Some masters
do the work freehand, while others work with a pre-designed
piece of paper placed on the skin. The smaller tattoo’s
typically take only ten to twenty minutes, while the larger
ones take up to a few hours.
Renowned travel journalist Joe Cummings looks at the
many variations of the tattoos and their meaning in his
relatively recent book:
“Sak yant typically feature a combination of alphabetic
syllables and geometric designs. Some may also depict
deities, sacred animals or mythical creatures from the
Hindu-Buddhist tradition… The thousands of designs – no
one knows exactly how many are in common use – are
meant to serve a variety of purposes”.
He explains that many people who seek a sak yant work
in risky occupations and seek protection from physical
danger or desire physical and mental power to help them
survive.Others seek bureaucratic power, romantic charisma,
forgiveness for past wrong doings, and there are also many
designs for good fortune and wealth. The designs may be
geometric in nature or include deities, Buddha images or
animal designs. For more detail on the fascinating history
and intricacy of the sak yant process check out “Sacred
Tattoos of Thailand: Exploring the Magic, Masters and
Mystery of Sak Yant”.
It is worth researching the in-depth meaning of the sak yant
if you, or someone you know decides to get one, as it is not
a regular tattoo but a tradition steeped in meaning. If you
are a woman seeking a sak yant check first if the master is
comfortable giving tattoos to women. Traditionally, both men
and women can receive tattoos, however these days it is a
matter of personal preference of the monk or ajaarn.
Some devotees of the sak yant become lost in the illusion
and magic surrounding the practice. A traditional practice is
to revisit your tattoo master each year to recharge the power
of your tattoo. However, this has been taken to the extreme
at Wat Kru, just an hour out of Bangkok, where over 10,000
people gather each year to be re-charged. Reports describe
people being “possessed by tattoos” and in a state of public
frenzy. It is a spectacle to behold which some argue takes
away from the practice as a common cultural tradition that
people of the region have held dear for centuries.
If you are interested in a sak yant, take your time to
research and reflect on whether it is something for you
and find a qualified master (there are a few in the book we
mentioned, plus read our review page 18). Then you can
share the significance of this cultural symbol back home!
Monk Eak doing a Sak Yant at Mae Tao Hai Temple
Where to get
a Sak Yant
Tattoo
in Chiang Mai?
Monk Eak from
Mae Tao Hai Temple
See city map H5
Traditional sak yant tattoos are hand-etched onto the skin
using ancient geometric designs mixed with Buddhist
prayers. They are believed to give the wearer magic powers
associated with healing, luck, strength and protection against
evil.
Buddhist monks originally engraved sak yant into warriors
seeking protection and strength in battle. Often covering their
entire bodies from head to toe in magic symbols to prevent
knives and arrows from piercing their skin.
No machines are used to create a sak yant tattoo. These
traditional Thai tattoos are engraved into skin with a long
metal spike or bamboo sharpened to a point. The needle is
dipped into ink and repeatedly jabbed through your flesh by
hand.
In Chiang Mai you can receive a sak yant tattoo at Mae Tao
Hai temple, in Mae Jo area. Monk Eak has practiced sak yant
for more than ten years, he has study in many places such as
Mae Jaem, Nan and Burma. Monk Eak does Sak Yant tattoos
in the real traditional way, with prayers and special ink. He
does tatto everyday except on Wednesdays and on Buddha
days but he does not tattoo women. If you wish to have a sak
yant tatto made by him, you might want to take a Thai friend
with you to help you translate. You should also bring nine
white flowers, five candles and nine incens sticks.
If you are running out of time or do not have any friend who could
help you translate, visit Sak Yant Shop in the old city of Chiang Mai.
widely available for Thais and visitors alike.
REAL EXPERIENCES
FROM TRAVELERS:
To the uninitiated, deep meditation
might seem like a fairly relaxing practice,
but speak to those who have attended
local retreats and you begin to
understand that it is a lot tougher than
many realise. It is not uncommon
to hear people refer to it as one of the
most difficult things they have ever
done. Surprisingly, those that find it
the most difficult are also the first to
extol the virtues of it.
“I never understood how much work
deep meditation could be. I felt quite
exhausted at the end of each day”, said
one student who attended a ten-day
retreat in Mae Hong Son to further
his understanding of the practice.
“While experiencing incredible peace
at times, I also discovered that far from
doing nothing, meditation involves
intense concentration and mindfulness
requires great exertion.”
He says he experienced his meditation
deepening with every day of the
program. “I found it easier to relax
into a state of mindfulness and
concentrate on my breathing. As
we approached the end of the
course, I felt a bit saddened. Despite
the tough start, I had really begun to
enjoy it.
Another who attended the meditation
retreat at Wat Doi Suthep, says she
found the process extremely difficult.
“I wanted to leave at least three times,”
she laughs. “I found the deprivation
of stimulus really frustrating at first. I
couldn’t quiet my mind; it was running
all over the place.” By the end of the
program she said the outside world
felt more “amplified”. “My hearing and
vision just felt much more acute to the
point of sensory overload near crowds
or loud things. I also felt lighter and
more good humoured than before.”
She says the experience even
challenged her self-perception. “I had
some very set ideas, but I found getting
beyond that, I’ve become more gentle
with myself.”
Event Must See
World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony
Scheduled to be held in Ayutthaya on March 17th, this year’s
“Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony” event will once again allow
Muay Thai boxers from Thailand and around the world to pay
respect to their teachers and for visitors to celebrate and learn
about this ancient martial art.
The Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony is an age-old tradition that
sees Thai boxers show gratitude and appreciation to their trainers
with a “wai”, a beautiful display of respect. Fighters perform
a series of dance-like movements accompanied by traditional
music.
Since 2004, boxers from all over the world have come
to the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya to perform the
ceremony and pay homage to the statue of Nai Khanom
Tom, a Thai hero who was famed for his victories over ten
Burmese fighters in 1774 after the sacking of Ayutthaya.
The 12th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony will take place
at the Ayutthaya Historical Park and there will be activities
from 13.00 to 19.30, around the central temple Wat Langkha
Khao. A Miracle Muay Thai Festival, hosted by TAT and the
Professional Boxing Association of Thailand, will allow visitors
to learn about the history of Thai boxing and its fighting
techniques. There will also be displays of sword making,
traditional Thai tattoos, live music shows and exhibition fights
by students from some of Thailand’s many boxing camps.
Ayutthaya city is located 500 km from Chiang Mai on the way to
Bangkok. Buses and trains leave daily from Chiang Mai Arcade
Bus Station and Chiang Mai train station.
VISIT
AROUND
Crested Finchbill
Bird watching
in Chiang Dao
Back to Nature Week End
Slaty-bellied Tesia
Grey-headed Parrotbill
Chiang Dao is a small town near Chiang Mai, only 70 kilometers
away. The region is well-suited for eco-tourism, with many trails
framed by the beautiful view of the mountains. There are easy
trekking options and longer hikes that require some preparation,
which lead to the flags located on the top of the mountain.
The most popular place is Chiang Dao Cave, which was
partially transformed into a Buddhist temple. Steps and handrails
make it a very accessible tour. In addition, artificial lighting allows
you to observe in detail the geology of the cave. If you prefer, you
can also hire a local guide to visit the other sectors of the cave,
which are mostly unchanged and are home to many bats.
Once in Chiang Dao be sure to visit Wat Tham Pha Plong, the
temple in the forest. Despite the 500 steps up to the mountain, it is
a light walk and there are many rest stops. Along the way you will
find several messages with Buddhist teachings, most translated
into English. The way to the temple is colored by a large number
of birds, such as the beautiful Asian Paradise Flycatcher and the
discrete Violet Cuckoo. Even the most distracted visitor will not
fail to notice the variety of Bulbul species.
Doi Chiang Dao National Park is the third highest mountain in
Thailand. The variety of forest types and altitude of this mountain,
combined with its close proximity to Myanmar, result in a large
number of exciting birds to be seen. Two species are the main
target birds for most birders: the Giant Nuthatch and Hume’s
Pheasant. Both of these occupy the higher areas of the national
park where they are regularly seen. Scaly Thrush is another
highly sought-after bird which can be encountered at the higher
altitudes.
Grey-headed Parrotbill, Crested Finchbill, various Thruses and
black-tailed Crake are other memorable birds that can be seen
higher up the mountain. In the gullies and damp patches around
the base of Chiang Dao, secretive species such as Slaty-bellied
Tesia, Scaly-breasted Partridge, White-crowned Forktail, Hooded
Pitta and Rusty-naped Pitta can be discovered with patience.
If you wish to go bird watching in Chiang Dao, there are many
specialized agencies and guides available in the little town. You
can also ask your hotel receptionist.
You may plan to stay only a day in Chiang Dao, but friendly
and comfortable bungalows bekon you to spend a night or two.
One of our favorite place is Nature Home Guest House (THB
400-800/night | tel. 089-913 3911) : just a few bungalows in a
large garden facing the big mountain.
Chiang Dao is located north of Chiang Mai and can be reached
following highway 107 toward Fang and Tathon. It is also very
accessible by public transport. Buses to Chang Dao and Fang
leave from Chang Puak bus station every 30 minutes. After
arriving in the city just grab a yellow Song Taew taxi to the cave,
to the temple or to your chosen bungalow. Have a nice weekend!
REN-
CONTRE
Jiraporn Pala
notre site.
March 11th, 2017
@ Huay Tung Tao Lake, Chiang Mai
National Thai Elephant Day was established
by the Thai government in 1998. The date
represents the anniversary of when the white
elephant was added to the old version of
the Thai flag. This event helps raise public
awareness of protection and conservation of
elephants. A big fruit buffet is organized at the
Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang.
(see ad. page 37).
Expect great music, amazing lighting and
stage designs plus hitting beats by famous
DJ’s from Thailand and Europe for this
second edition of North Fest. A two day
DJ festival at Prasert Land, near Nimman.
(tickets sold at 399THB - internet price).
This event combines art and music with a
beautiful street art zone and concert by
famous Thai artists such as Solitude Is Bliss,
Helmetheads, Scrubb, The Super Glasses,
Ska Ensemble and T-Bone. Organized at
the great lake near Chiang Mai city, tickets
are sold at entry (199 THB)
