state institutions on both sides, as well as a relatively undeveloped and
ideologized historical science make it even more difficult.
In Croatia, as well as in Serbia, the profession of historians is neither
developed nor respected. This can change if new discussions are
opened (for example, on the nation and nationalism, on the ideas and
ideology of Yugoslavism, as well as on the issue of the attitude towards
democracy, state law and parliamentarism, fascism, liberalism
and communism) and issues that have become topical again (for
example, on the experiences and traumas from the First and Second
World War, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the significance and influence
of the Islam, the Ustasha and the Independent State of Croatia,
and the socialist Yugoslavia), as well as sub-topics (e.g. on the history
of ethnic and religious minorities and the history of women).
So, we only need to restore dignity to the historians' profession. Before
all, it means opening possibilities for research and interpretations, and
especially serious argumentation, instead of ex cathedra lecturing. Professionalism
and intellectualism, as well as reliability and openness of
the historians' profession must not be compromised any more.
Zusammenfassung
Trotz der, durch den Krieg (1991-1995) verursachten Verzweifelung
und den Wunden, gibt es immer noch Raum für Hoffnung und die
Möglichkeit für die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Geschichtsforschern/
Historikern der Republik Kroatien und Bundesrepublik Jugoslawien.
Dabei müssen die bisher begünstigten und beschirmten Ideen und
Themen aufgegeben, und die Geschichtsschreibung entpolitisiert
werden. Die Politik der Segregation und Diskriminierung nach innen,
der Fremdenfeindlichkeit, des Isolationismus and des Hasses nach
außen, tragen der Umwandlung und Entwicklung der Geschichtswissenschaft
jedoch kaum bei. Eine grundsätzliche Abgeneigtheit der
staatlichen Einrichtungen auf beiden Seiten, sowie die relative
Zurückgebliebenheit und Ideologisierung der Geschichtswissenschaft
erschweren dies nur noch.
Sowohl in Kroatien als auch in Serben, ist der Beruf des Geschichtsforschers
weder entwickelt noch angesehen. Dies kann geändert
