Not only can you see great shows throughout the year at Embassy Theatre but look out for some special festivals and events! SO Festival is the biggest family-friendly and completely free outdoor arts festival in the UK. With a busy programme of events throughout the week and performances to enthrall young and old alike. FASCINATING FACTS DID YOUKNOW? • Skegness comes from the Danish word Skeggi meaning ‘bearded one’ • The Norwegian Navy gifted the pulpit in Ingoldmells village church, “ingratitude, to commemorate the training of 3,000 officers and men in the Parish during the second world war.” • William Waynflete left a legacy of 20 shillings to the Hyltoft family to repair the South sea bank in perpetuity. The Hyltofts lived in a mansion on the seaward side of Roman Bank where Butlins now stands • The men of Ingoldmells were in trouble with the Bishop in 1302 for holding the market in the church. Seems like we have always enjoyed a good market in Ingoldmells then! • According to the Village History 1965. Henry IV held court in Ingoldmells. William of Skegness, who lived in Ingoldmells was his Chief Steward. • There is a legend that the original church is in ruins about a mile out to sea. Some records refer to St Peter’s Church with St Paul’s. • The remains of a forest still visible at very low tide indicate that Ingoldmells once stood much farther east. The vast forest ran northwards from the village. • William Skegness was from Ingoldmells. He was buried here in 1408. Tomb in South Aisle says Willm.
