Katamā catasso?<br />

1. Dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā,<br />

2. dukkhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā,<br />

3. sukhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā,<br />

4. sukhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā.<br />

1. Katamā ca, bhikkhave, dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā?<br />

{1} Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pakatiyāpi tibbarāgajātiko hoti,<br />

abhikkhaṇaṁ rāgajaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti,<br />

{2} pakatiyāpi tibbadosajātiko hoti, abhikkhaṇaṁ dosajaṁ<br />

dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti,<br />

{3} pakatiyāpi tibbamohajātiko hoti, 15 abhikkhaṇaṁ mohajaṁ<br />

dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.<br />

Tassimāni pañcindriyāni 16 mudūni pātubhavanti:<br />

{1} Saddhindriyaṁ,<br />

{2} viriyindriyaṁ,<br />

{3} satindriyaṁ,<br />

{4} samādhindriyaṁ,<br />

{5} paññindriyaṁ.<br />

So imesaṁ pañcannaṁ indriyānaṁ muduttā dandhaṁ ānantariyaṁ<br />

pāpuṇāti āsavānaṁ khayāya.<br />

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā.<br />

15 These three (rāga, dosa, moha) are known as the three roots (mūla) of<br />

unwholesome thoughts; rāga here is a synonym of the more usual lobha.<br />
