1. Tattha katamaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ?<br />

Idha bhikkhu yasmiṁ samaye rūpūpapattiyā maggaṁ bhāveti,<br />

vivicceva kāmehi, vivicca akusalehi dhammehi, savitakkaṁ,<br />

savicāraṁ, vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ, paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ<br />

upasampajja viharati pathavīkasiṇaṁ. 12 Tasmiṁ samaye<br />

pañcaṅgikaṁ jhānaṁ hoti:<br />

1. Vitakko,<br />

2. vicāro,<br />

3. pīti,<br />

4. sukhaṁ,<br />

5. cittassekaggatā.<br />

Idaṁ vuccati paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ.<br />

Avasesā dhammā jhānasampayuttā.<br />

11 The standard pericope for the four absorptions can be found in the<br />

definition of sammā samādhi in section 21 below; this is a variation<br />

explaining the factors that are present also; they recurr in section 12,<br />

where they are said to lead to a pleasant abiding here and now.<br />

12 This is one of the meditation objects known to be helpful for producing<br />

absorption.
