YACHTING
CLEARANCE
WHEN ENTERING
SPANISH WATERS
Due to the current situation regarding the number of migrants attempting
to enter Europe and the high terrorism alert, a number of Schengen Area
countries have reintroduced border controls. It is therefore advisable that
cruisers now check with their local yacht agent for a full picture of what will be
required when entering a Spanish port.
Boats larger than 24 metres will now have to provide a notification of arrival
to the Port Captain’s office when entering Spanish ports, as well as complying
with other local requirements and any additional paperwork. This hasn’t yet
been enforced in all Spanish ports, but it is now effective in Barcelona and Ibiza,
for example. Also, when the yacht is carrying more than 12 passengers it will
have to request a special permission for anchorage.
In the case of non-EU flagged vessels, the clearance has to be done at a
Customs and Immigration Office at a port of entry. In subsequent ports where
Guardia Civil and/or Customs officials are stationed, the clearance procedure
may be repeated, although this varies from place to place. Special care must
be taken when filling in the marina or shipyard’s entry forms as these will be
sent off to the Border Police Office and revised. If you come from an EU port,
make sure this is stated. The same applies if you come from a non-EU port. The
certified local agent is able to directly inform the Customs and the Immigration
Office authorities about the arrival of foreign yachts. When coming from a non-
EU port, there will be a complete passport control at the Immigration Office, and
you will need to declare your arrival at a Customs Office with a verbal/written
declaration of entrance.
After having cleared into Spain, the procedure at subsequent ports will
depend on the requirements of local offices. However, one should be prepared
to show all relevant documents whenever asked. The local agent, on behalf
“ONE SHOULD
RELEVANT
DOCUMENTS
of the vessel, may be asked for registration papers, crew lists, certificates of
competence and proof of marine insurance. Once cleared, yachts are free to
stop in ports and anchorages where there are no official checks. Anchorage
will always need to be checked to avoid restrictions and special permissions
depending on the site.
Non-EU flagged vessels should also clear with Immigration and Customs
on departure from Spain. Customs will record the date of departure on the
Customs permit, if necessary. This permit can be used again if re-entering Spain
within the period of its validity. Each arrival and departure must be noted by
Customs on the permit.
Since yachts under TPA, (“inward processing”), must immediately abandon
EU waters once TPA is closed, the last European port would be the one where
the TPA had been commissioned.
Sensibly, a voyage from Cannes to Palma de Mallorca, for example, is still
regarded by the Spanish authorities as effectively a “coastal” voyage between
EU ports, as long as there is no intermediate stop in a non-EU port. In this case
there would be no need to comply with the full inward clearance formalities,
only immigration ones.
Regarding immigration procedures, it is always obligatory to declare crew
and passenger movements while in Spanish waters when changing Immigration
Port Offices. In practice, however, the authorities expect to be informed of
one’s arrival even if coming from a neighbouring EU country. As a result of the
implementation of the Schengen Agreement, boats carrying non-EU nationals
and also nationals of EU countries which are not signatories of the Schengen
Agreement must clear Immigration at the port of entry into Spain.
As per the regulation in force and following the Immigration requirements, as
yacht agents, we are obliged to declare any change to the crew or passenger list
that occurs while the yacht is in Spanish waters. In order to do so, as agents we
need to have the updated crew and passenger list, so we can follow each case
with the Immigration authorities and arrange proper declaration.
Please note that not all Spanish mainland ports, Cádiz for example, abide
strictly by the Schengen rules, and may decline to stamp documents of entry.
In such a case it would be left up to the captain to clear into the EU at the next
port of call.
A further requirement by Palma authorities is that when a Discharge Book
or a Seaman’s Book is held by a crew member, and service dates are recorded
in such a document, then it is a fineable offence if the seafarer’s book has not
been updated to record the entry about their joining of the vessel concerned.
As interpretations of EU regulations vary within national and especially local
boundaries, let alone between different countries, the only safe course is to
obtain the latest updates and guidance from your local agent well in advance of
arrival at any given port.
CHARTERS
REALLY BOOST THE
MARKET IN GENERAL
“CHARTERS
TEND TO BE
45M-90M
SUPERYACHTS
LEASED FOR A
WEEK”
CHARTER
OPPORTUNITIES
IN SPAIN
Local regulations and legislation regarding customs, port authorities and
temporary importation are just some of the issues that captains entering foreign
territories need to be completely clued up on. Bea Alonso heads the Customs
team at Evolution, dedicated to offering full support and accurate local information
to clients entering Spanish waters. She joins us in analysing the tendencies and
requirements of Spain’s steadily growing yacht charter industry.
Although Evolution still works with about the same amount of charters, the
sector in Spain has grown by more than 30% in the last two years. These
charters tend to be 45m-90m superyachts which are leased for a
week, and occasionally large charters over 100m.
A key difference between the charter systems in Spain
compared to similar countries like France and Italy is that
Spain requires a charter license. In France, for example, it’s
sufficient to pay the VAT, which makes the process easier and
clearer. It usually takes between a month and a month and a
half to obtain a Spanish charter license, valid for three months.
However, this is only required when the guests are boarding or
disembarking in Spain.
Another characteristic of Spanish legislation is that the owner
cannot use or step foot on their boat while on charter. There is only one
exemption to this request, a clause states that if a company wants to charter a
specific boat and can prove that the type of vessel requested is not available at the
time of the charter, the company will be able to charter the boat without license.
This rarely happens, as it’s hard to meet these conditions.
“Charters really boost the market in general; many unexpected requirements
emerge at the last minute, especially on the Balearic Islands. Many requests are
based on guesswork by the crew because they don’t know the guests or their needs.
On a private yacht they’re already familiar with the owner’s preferences,” explains
Bea. She goes on to add that although 90% of their clients are private yachts,
charters are increasingly coming to the islands thanks to the new regulations. The
market is slowly adapting to these requirements and they can see that in the next
years there will be a commercial boom.
One of the ways the market is enhanced through chartering is the higher costs
of customs, licensing and taxes that are usually applied. Bea observes that the
guests’ behaviour and demands are completely different. “We really enjoy the
challenge of meeting these requirements. It also teaches us the way the market is
fluctuating, with new owners, young people, different styles, and different holiday
motivations.”
She considers that some improvements to the current situation would be
important for the industry’s future. Top of the list is implementing a common
legislation in all countries, or even unifying the procedure throughout Spain. A
charter license in the Balearics must be obtained from the Department of Ports
and Airports of the Balearic Government. Other autonomous communities in
Spain don’t have a department for maritime transport and so the license would be
issued by the Maritime Authority.
Bonded Warehouse
From October 2016, Evolution is able to offer the use
of a 500m2 customs warehouse for goods in transit
for all boats and companies in this sector. A boat can
now bring goods into Spain from outside the European
Union without paying import taxes, and Evolution can
store these goods for the required amount of time. It
also applies to a logistics company who needs to import,
for example, materials from the USA to repair a boat in a
Spanish port or shipyard.
This is the first bonded warehouse in all the
Balearics, and Evolution is proud to make this
advantageous service available to all our clients and
agents within the industry.
LOGISTICS
THE
IMPORTANCE
OF CREW
& CAPTAINS’
STORAGE
One of the key roles of a local logistics agent is to manage any transactions
between the yacht and its providers. This leaves the captains free to do what
they should be doing –looking after their yacht and crew, and not worrying about
when the suppliers will turn up.
An important service offered by Evolution’s logistics department is the
transport and storage of the captain and crew’s belongings. Txell Castelló, based in
Barcelona, gives us an overview.
The personal property of a captain tends to be furniture or home decoration
items, and they usually just need temporary storage whilst relocation to their home
in France or Spain is arranged within a week. “Occasionally their property remains
in storage for longer, such as the Vespa, bottles of wine and boxing punch-bag that
belong to the captain of a +60m superyacht. We’ve been looking after them for a
year,” shares Txell.
The convenience factor is evident, as items are collected directly from the
boat or pick-up address and are stored by Evolution until it’s time for them to be
forwarded on. Maximum care is always taken to protect items, such as adding
bubble wrap and dark protective plastic so that nobody can see what is being
transported to ensure confidentiality. All items are carefully labelled and classified
according to whether or not the boat is in Barcelona.
As well as their own storage space, Evolution also uses other depots. They have a
logistics collaborator located in ZAL, at the port of Barcelona. A second outsourced
space is in MB’92. Items are classified according to the location of the
boats. The inventory itself is always managed directly by Evolution,
through a system that registers all the necessary information, the
date received, weight, volume, a photo, in which warehouse they
are located, and the content, if known. “It’s a good system, but
it could be improved with a customised software program for
processing all this data,” comments Txell. Large warehouses are
used, with shelves that reach high up, similar to the flat-pack
collection points at retail centres such as Ikea. Short-stay items
are kept closer to the ground where they can be reached more
conveniently, whilst those that will be kept longer in storage are
placed higher up.
“Our client profile is quite varied,” says Txell. “The things that women
tend to send back home are especially clothes, beauty and hygiene products,
whilst men send music and sports equipment such as surf boards and bicycles.”
“THE
CONVENIENCE
FACTOR IS
EVIDENT, ITEMS
ARE COLLECTED
FROM THE
BOAT”
Evolution receives a lot of requests to transport bicycles, and special containers
are used to ensure maximum protection in order to always get them safely to their
destination address. Although the storage and transport service is on behalf of
individual crew members, the cost and registration details is normally
assumed by the yacht.
Txell remembers the case of one crew member who asked
to send all their items home - totalling no less than five large
containers. “It was incredible, we had no idea how he managed
to keep that amount of stuff in a small cabin!” Different
transportation quotes were also requested to send the luggage
to India, the USA and Abu Dhabi, so they didn’t even know
where this person actually lived. Another amusing anecdote
involved the delivery of some Christmas presents, an army of lead
soldiers. Customs demanded a letter specifying their use, which of
course was a gift from the Three Kings to some children. Absolutely
inoffensive, but this apparently wasn’t clear to the customs officers… Luckily,
Evolution was on hand to make sure that any doubts were resolved, and the
children received their festive gifts!
REFIT & REPAIR ESSENTIALS
15 years by your side in
Spanish waters
TRUSTING YOUR
LOCAL LOGISTICS AGENT
...and beyond
John Shinske, one of the managers at Evolution Yacht Agents, is a firm believer
that every yacht needs the support of a good local agent that anticipates
problems before they arise and is the first to deal with them head on. Someone
who knows the rules and will keep you informed, without burying their
head in the sand hoping there won’t be any problems. “At Evolution
we have the right phone numbers and the right contacts
throughout Spain,” he confirms. “We know how important it is
to coordinate the necessary parts and services according to
each yacht’s requirements and schedules.”
Let’s suppose that your yacht has decided to make MB’92
and One Ocean Port Vell home for the next 6 months. The
Captain is happy, the crew is ecstatic and now it’s time to get
to work setting up your job lists, supply chain and dealing with
all the logistical concerns that a refit entails. To start with you’re
in luck, because all of Spain’s major yacht marinas are well connected
to the rest of the world, and it is only a short drive from Barcelona to the
South of France. Daily direct flights go to the States, Europe and the rest of
the world, so not only are you ideally placed for a successful refit, you can also
14 BY EVOLUTION
“AT EVOLUTION
WE HAVE THE
NUMBERS AND
CONTACTS”
reconnect and recharge your own batteries wherever the call is strongest.
This is the moment when you’ll find out if you made the right choice for your
local logistics agent. Imagine…the last piece for the rebuilt pump is in Barcelona,
but DHL has said it will not go out for delivery until Monday…but you
need it to be installed on Saturday. It’s Friday at 15:30. Who are
you going to call, the shipper in the States? He isn’t even up
yet. If you have chosen the right local agent they will be at the
pickup location, and will make sure that your piece will be on
the yacht in time. That’s what a good local agent does, when
you’re in trouble they get you out of trouble, and when you’re
not they ensure that all procedures and operations involving
other parties run as smoothly as possible. Communications
between the shipper and the local agent is key to an efficient
supply chain and we develop this close relationship from the
beginning.
Evolution’s expertise is on hand throughout Spain, but if they don’t
know what you need they can’t give any advice. “Just ask us, we are happy to
help…it’s what we do best,” says John.
Specialised in Yacht Management, New Build and Refit, Master Yachts operates internationally from
its main office of Palma de Mallorca, in the heart of the Mediterranean.
Over the years, the company has built up a strong relationship and support from local suppliers and
contractors and has acquired a widespread knowledge of available resources in Spanish waters.
Its multi-lingual team also offers assistance with local authorities, customs procedures and Spanish law.
DECK & ENGINEERING
INSIDE THE
ENGINE ROOM
environment. Natural alternatives have been developed which are equally efficient,
and many yachts that travel to the increasing areas which have restrictions have
already switch to ecological cleaning products as standard. “It’s also logistically
easier for suppliers like Evolution to transport safe products. We avoid the higher
costs and delays of moving dangerous products,” Clara explains. They have also
noticed an increase in safety related products. More fire prevention equipment
is carried on board such as fire extinguishers, masks and specialised pyrotechnics
kits.
As a yacht’s length increases so does its crew and the engineering department
is no exception. Larger yachts are starting to have an Electric Technical Officer
and IT Officer who are responsible for the increasingly complex onboard digital
automation systems. “This also means we need to keep up with new developments
in the sector so we know what components for new IT and electronics systems
clients are asking for,” says Clara.
Although based on the Spanish mainland, Evolution are constantly surprised
by requests from boats that are as far away as the Caribbean and USA, for things
which are neither urgent nor scarce. “I guess they like our service,” smiles Clara.
“We once had a 100m LOA yacht in New York asking us for heaters because it was
very cold. As if they don’t have shops that sell heaters in New York! I suppose they
prefer to get everything from just one provider.”
After 5 years in the market, Evolution have firmly established their reputation a
reference for excellence and efficiency, working with the most important brands in
the yachting industry to solve complex requests in any engine room.
Less visible than the Chief Stewardesses and certainly no less vital, Engineers
have a backstage role that covers everything from staying afloat to complying
with international regulations, upgrading the sound system and replacing the
engine oil. If that sounds like intensive multitasking you are absolutely
right. Evolution Yacht Agents offer full support in rapidly finding
the right spare parts and outsourcing specialised services. Clara
Morón and Victor Moritz give us an insight into the daily
challenges that keep them busy and motivated.
The trend for increasingly bigger yachts means there’s more
space to cover and maintain. A larger variety of yachts go to
the Balearics, and they tend to be about 45m long, whereas
Barcelona has more superyachts of around 65m. It comes as no
surprise that the type of spare parts that Evolution are asked to
provide are equally varied.
During the year, minor maintenance in the engine room includes
changing filters, replacing gaskets and lubricants. If a piece breaks it needs
replacing. Typical requests from the engine rooms are generators and water
treatment equipment such as systems for water purification or desalination.
The main brands of motors used by large yachts are MTU and Caterpillar,
which account for about 90% of Evolution’s clients. Smaller yachts may carry
other brands such as Cummins or John Dere. Each motor manufacturer
recommends which other brands to use, and engineers stick with
factory recommendations to avoid risks. SHELL is used by 90%
of clients for oils (hydraulic and motor) and lubricants. Other
popular brands are Mobil and Castrol. “If we’re not asked for a
specific name we always use providers that have a guarantee.
We’re guided by our experience and the prestige of our
providers,” says Clara. “We aren’t ambassadors for any brand,
and if we offer an alternative it’s because we’ve got confidence
in the provider, based on good experiences with them and their
products.”
Recent trends include environmentally sustainable cleaning and
maintenance products, made obligatory by new stricter legislations. Cleaning
INTERIOR
“THERE IS A
GROWING
DEMAND FOR
NATURAL AND
ORGANIC
PRODUCTS”
COSMETICS
BELOW THE RADAR
Looking and feeling good is constant commitment to yourself, and any initial
cosmetics supplies that guests might have taken on board run out quickly.
Some also choose to take advantage of this break from a busy routine to dedicate
extra time to pampering themselves, and as with any other aspect of life in the
micro-world of a yacht a good supplier can make all the difference.
Monica López is based in Barcelona and takes pride in ensuring that
Evolution’s clients always receive the very best service.
She shares that some of the most popular cosmetics brands
requested by guests are Jo Malone, Molton Brown and
Lancaster. Each brand has its specific characteristics and a
loyal clientele that always specifically asks for them by name.
These tend to be internationally renowned brands with a good
global distribution in select establishments. Client requests can
usually be anticipated as they tend to follow the latest trends of
successful new products and well established favourites. This is
where insider experience comes in handy, and the Evolution team
know where to source all kinds of products, cosmetics included. If they
aren’t available, a good “upgrade” alternative is always suggested. Preferred
boutiques include Jo Malone, Sephora and L’Occitane, which are found throughout
Spain, local stores and specific apothecaries.
One of the most recent and increasingly growing trends is a higher demand
for natural and organic products such as coconut oil. This is aligned with a general
tendency towards a sustainable lifestyle, based on a growing awareness that any
decisions have their consequences. On a personal level, natural products are
more aligned with our bodies and have a holistically more beneficial effect. From a
wider perspective, the products and services we spend money on are the tip of an
iceberg – below each individual item there is an industry which interacts with its
workers, materials used and the environment in a particular way. Buying
natural products from sustainable companies directs our energy,
through currency, towards supporting their vision.
“We don’t tend to get unusual requests,” says Monica.
“What surprises me, however, is the quantity and variety of
cosmetics that guests ask for.” She goes on to explain that a
recent cosmetics shopping list from a 52m superyacht docked
in Barcelona totalled over 4,000€. Jo Malone’s Lime, Basil
and Mandarin collection topped the list, with everything from
shampoo and conditioner to body lotion and soap – 40 bars of it!
The crew tend to organise their own cosmetics, if anything they’ll
ask for sunscreen, she added.
Any detail that adds up to the comfort of the yacht’s guests and crew is of
paramount importance, and the Interiors team at Evolution are passionate about
ensuring that whether the yacht has just docked in Spanish waters or is getting
prepared for the onward journey, everyone on board is looking and feeling as
good as they can.
finest ingredients. Colin Clark has been working as Head Butcher of the
Provisioning Department of Evolution Yacht Agents for five years. Their daily
challenge of sourcing the items required by a demanding international clientele
can only be met by constantly striving for perfection, and for knowing the food
industry inside out. In this exclusive feature for MOOR·E Magazine, Colin shares
some insights into the latest tendencies in the production of the meat that will
probably end up on your yacht’s barbecue.
As with most other commodities, meat is subject to fashions
and trends. Two of the biggest in the last few years have been
Wagyu and dry-aging, and Colin suggests that both have been
taken to extremes.
The higher grade Japanese breeds that produce Wagyu
beef are prized for their uber-marbling of unsaturated fat.
However, this can often mask their true flavour, resulting in
a lump of fat with some beef marbling. Whilst a small amount
of marbling can be desirable it is by no means the Holy Grail of
beef; you can have an excellent piece with no marbling. Likewise,
the aging process has been taking to ridiculous extremes. Experts
recommend that beef carcasses hang under normal refrigeration for a
good couple of weeks, and under controlled humidity for about 30 days. The
three or four months (or more) that some producers currently use overpowers
the true taste of the beef.
In some ways it seems that part of the problem is that few people have
tasted really good beef. Producing great beef is both simple and extremely
complicated. Bovines are herbivores and thrive best on a variety of grasses
“AS WITH
MOST OTHER
COMMODITIES,
MEAT IS ALSO
SUBJECT TO
TRENDS”
and leafage. Left alone, the cattle know which grass or plant is at its optimum,
and this comes through in the meat’s flavour. Unfortunately in the majority of
cases it’s not the stockmen and conscientious farmers who control production.
Market prices increasingly drive the way livestock are raised and processed, with
a focus on bigger, faster and cheaper methods which result in more profit but
less quality.
Fortunately, there are still people who care enough about their product and
animals to provide top-class beef, lamb, pork and poultry. “You have
to search far and wide, but that´s part of my job,” says Colin, who
has very good relations with small producers, mainly in the UK,
who use heritage breeds such as English Longhorn cattle and
Herdwick sheep to produce excellent meat.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, Colin assures us, as
some of the new tendencies are very positive. Rosé veal is a
good example. Dairy cows must calve once a year to maintain
milk production. Usually they´re mated to a beef bull such
as an Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, or Galloway. The resulting
calves are raised to two or three years and form a large part of
the beef we eat. A small percentage is mated with dairy bulls and
the female calves are raised to produce milk. Male calves were usually
killed at birth, but many British producers are now raising the male dairy calves
for the veal market under some very stringent welfare guidelines, producing an
excellent and very ethical product.
If you’re looking for gourmet burgers and premium sausages for this season’s
barbecues or premium cuts of meat for the dining table, don’t just check the
label – check in with the provisioning experts who know what’s truly behind it.
ONBOARD
ENTERTAINMENT
perfectly organized event is like a tapestry made with seamlessly interwoven
A threads that appear to be invisible. However, behind the guests’ experience
of each occasion there are often many challenges that have been overcome and
logistical details resolved, as well as the energy, motivation and inspiration of the
professionals involved. Kerry Allerton works in the Evolution concierge team in
Barcelona. She smiles as she shares that they are never given much notice, and
are able to organize wonderful events in 48 hours that event companies ashore
probably have weeks to plan.
Xisco Notario, her colleague based in the Balearics adds that the on-board
entertainment they provide is as varied as the clients who seek it. Popular requests
include flamenco shows, magicians for children’s parties and wine-tasting, as well
as live music and DJ sessions for occasions such as birthday parties.
Whilst some clients give a very specific brief, others turn to the experts for
suggestions of “something different”. This could be a birthday celebration, or a
show with an added “wow factor” to surprise and amaze their guests. Creativity
is required to go beyond simply good ideas; they also need to be feasible within
the vessel’s capacity and potential restrictions as a venue. Power requirements
versus available supply, and the space and its characteristics need to be carefully
considered. Each yacht is different, from the camber of the deck for mounting
stages to protecting its surface from a dancer’s high heels. Even when docked the
vessel’s motion might be an issue, and visitors need to be informed about onboard
etiquette.
An event coordinator or team manager is sometimes on site throughout the
organization, especially for more complex events. At other times, it’s the Evolution
“All the preparation process has to be achieved without encroaching on the
guests’ privacy,” adds Kerry. “If the event is a surprise, we also need to maintain the
secrecy without any guests finding out!”
We asked Kerry to spill the beans on the most exciting onboard event she has
ever been involved in. During her time as purser of the 82m private yacht “A Taste
of Spain”, they arranged an exquisite Spanish themed party. Local traditions came
to life with a Gypsy Kings style band and flamenco dancers. Gourmet specialties
included a leg of the finest Iberian ham, sherry tasting and a typical lunch prepared
by a local chef. A lively ambience was created with Spanish style decorations in
the dining room, and guests dressed up in flamenco or matador costumes. This
spectacular celebration was captured by a videographer who made a 20 minute
movie of the occasion.
There are plenty of opportunities for quality entertainment throughout the
Spanish mainland, but an onboard event is in a class of its own. Xisco observes that
there are many reasons why yacht owners choose to hold events on their yacht
and not on mainland locations. “Nobody is disturbed when you’re out at sea,” he
says. “VIP treatment and guest confidentiality is also guaranteed.” The privilege
and exclusivity of having something customized especially for guests is the very
definition of luxury, and the comfort and ease of each yacht is an assured part of
any onboard event tapestry.
Open-air theatre, live music and performance from some of the most talented
HIDDEN TREASURES
OF THE CITY
DISCOVER BARCELONA’S
CHARMS OFF THE
BEATEN TRACK.
Horta Labyrinth Park
This is the oldest and perhaps the most beautiful park in Barcelona. It is located
on the outskirts of the city, next to the surrounding Collserola Natural Reserve.
Considered off the beaten track by regular tourists, those who make the effort to
explore its grounds are rewarded by an oasis of peace and breathtaking landscaped
gardens. It was created in 1792 as part of the estate of the nobleman Joan
Desvalls, Marquis of Llupià and Alfarràs. Back then, the walled city of Barcelona
was far away in the district now known as the Ciutat Vella, encircled by fields and
small villages.
The park is named after its most famous feature, located on the bottom terrace.
A large labyrinth composed of tall cypress trees beckons visitors to enter the maze
and find the centre, reigned over by a statue of Eros. Perhaps there’s a certain
poetic irony in the tendency to find the return journey back more challenging; its
dead-end hedges require a combination of trial and error and strategic navigation.
Two Italian style pavilions preside over the central terrace, with statues of
Danae and Ariadne, and a bust of Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. The pavilion
of the top terrace is dedicated to the nine muses, and an inspiring inscription
reads “The harmony of art and nature generates beauty.”
This theme permeates every corner of the gardens. Water features abound,
such as a low canal reminiscent of Amsterdam with romantic bridges and a channel
filled with shoals of bright goldfish. Artistic fountains, tall reeds with nesting birds
and remarkable trees can all be enjoyed from well-placed benches. There is also an
open-air kiosk near the entrance for refreshments and snacks.
Address: Pg Castanyers, 1
Barcelona was a thriving town for craftsmen and this square was also the
location of the shoemakers’ and coppersmiths’ guilds. The former building has
now become a footwear museum with one of the quirkiest collections that you
can visit in the city. Characteristic bars and restaurants also surround the square,
making it an ideal place to take a break as you contemplate its history and plan the
next stage of your sightseeing itinerary in the Catalan capital.
Address: Plaça de Sant Felip Neri
Plaça de Sant Felip Neri
Just off the busy tourist centre of Barcelona, this small square stands as testament
to one of the most turbulent epochs in Spanish history. The Civil War which was
fought on the streets of Barcelona between 1936-1939 left its mark on the city
and nowhere more visibly than this nostalgic square.
Narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter lead from the Cathedral to the church of
Sant Felip Neri, which also marks the entrance to the old Jewish Quarter of El Call.
Its Baroque majesty is emphasised by stately doors and fine stonework details.
Old cast-iron lamp posts add a romantic touch.
A plaque honours the memory of 42 people, mostly children from the adjacent
school, who lost their lives when a fascist bomb fell in an air raid, one inauspicious
day of January 1938. You can also see bullet holes pock-marking the lower part of
the stone walls made by automatic machine-gun fire.
The square has a small stone fountain with an unusual octagonal base in the
centre, ornate and yet subdued. Its flowing waters remind us that life carries on,
its cycles and events as mysterious as the essence of the church reflected in its
clear waters.
Tibidabo
Barcelona is framed by the Collserola mountain range which includes the
distinctive mountain of Tibidabo. Its name means “I will give you,” and is a reference
to the Biblical phrase spoken to Jesus by the devil, who took him to the highest
mountain and tried to tempt him by showing all the opulent lands below. It is
crowned by the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor, a Romanesque church which was
built between 1902-1961. This is illuminated by night, and its distinctive yellow
outline high on the horizon can be seen from the city below.
One of the world’s oldest amusement parks is also located here, with some
original rides dating back to 1889. The top attraction is perhaps a large ferris
wheel which slowly takes you higher and higher as you enjoy the beautiful views.
Kids of all ages will love the rollercoaster and rides.
Several snack bars include Enrique Tomás, which serves quality Spanish ham,
and La Masia, with traditional tapas and dishes.
To reach the top by public transport, take the FGC train from Plaça Catalunya
to Tibidabo. The “Tramvia Blau” tram goes to the top of Avinguda Tibidabo, and a
funicular rail completes the journey.
Montjuïc and the Gardens of the Grec Theatre
One of the most pleasant areas to explore in Barcelona is the mountain of Montjuïc,
which can be reached in several ways. We suggest you take the spectacular cablecar
ride from the Port of Barcelona, which offers great views. Montjuïc is known
as the city’s “green lung”, as this large open space includes many parks and gardens
such as the Botanical Garden, Laribal Garden and Cactus Garden.
Our favourite corner of Montjuïc is the gardens of the Grec Theatre. These
were created in 1929, with the rest of the features and installations designed
to welcome the Barcelona International Exhibition. The gardens are exquisitely
laid out with well-kept flowerbeds and details such as tumbling pergolas. A wide
variety of plants, flowers and trees flourish here, including orange trees, tall
palm trees and a herb garden full of colourful and fragrant lavender plants. It’s
SPECIAL FEATURE
The Passion
AND
GRACE OF FLAMENCO
Flamenco dancers move like a flame flickering between the ground tapped
by nimble footsteps and curling wrists that reach up towards the skies, their
performance expressive and emotional. Guitars strum the unmistakable rhythms and
riffs of the flamenco tradition, each musician adding a dash of their own personality
to the time-honoured refrains accompanied by cajon drumming and percussion.
Spain’s most popular dance is thought to date back to as early as the 16th
century in Andalucía, when this southernmost region was a melting pot of
cultures. Gypsies, Moors and Jews were thrown together as they fled
persecution from the Christian crown of Castille. Andalusían folk
music fused with the cante gitano in districts where daily struggle
was chronicled in lively taverns. A popular folk dance emerged,
passionate as the song lyrics infused with powerful emotions
of love, jealously and rejection; songs of an open heart pining
for its beloved, the grief and lament of oppression, or ecstatic
promise of a newly wed couple.
This early style of flamenco is known as a palo seco, unadorned
and accompanied only by frenzied dancing and hand-clapping. As
the tradition evolved, each town or village developed a distinctive
style, its roots touching on their own local heritage. Flamenco around
Malaga was based on early Moorish verdiales which evolved into the fandango.
Seville teemed with gypsy canto and martinetes, the anvil and hammer beating
rhythms of gypsy blacksmiths, whilst the port city of Cádiz was renowned for the
more upbeat tone of its alegrías and tangos.
By the second half of the 19th century, flamenco tablaos began attracting larger
crowds for more formal shows. The guitar was by now part of the performance, and
“LET YOURSELF
BE SEDUCED BY
A SPECTACULAR
SHOW ON YOUR
YACHT”
castanets took the sound of clicking fingers a step further.
Infectious and lively, flamenco originated as an informal shared experience rather
than the stage show it has now become. Dancers move in and out of the circle,
taking their turns and stepping back for the next twirl. Hand-clapping and outbursts
of encouragement and appreciation - olé! - add to the upbeat atmosphere.
A flamenco show is a colourful experience; gypsy dresses with bright polk-adots
and silk shawls swirl with the dancers’ moves. More experienced dancers
add a long train of additional ruffles to create an even stronger visual
impression. The painted fans that offer some respite against the
Andalusían heat take on a life of their own, expertly twirled with
the subtle coding of a body language that beckons, rejects and
coyly toys with each preening suitor.
Excellent performances by world-class dancers and musicians
can be found throughout Spain. Popular venues include the
Tablao Flamenco Cordobés and Tablao del Carmen in Barcelona,
Palma Flamenco in the old town district of Palma de Mallorca,
Tablao del Levante in Cartagena, and La Cava in the heart of Cádiz.
Let yourself be seduced by a spectacular show that captures the
authentic spirit of flamenco with Evolution Yacht Agents. We can arrange
an unforgettable and uniquely Spanish experience, with a special performance
by talented flamenco dancers and musicians in the comfort of your yacht.
