JOHN LEEECH; DO WE HAVE A NEW ‘IMRAN KHAN’
TYPE OPPONENT ON THE SCENE?
Waves of voters were heading
to their voting stations
on the 5th of May 2016 to
cast their democratic vote on who
they would like to see as their councillor
from the panel of hopeful candidates.
The moments of past glory
would soon be gone as the new 2016
votes were cast and counted. Looking
back for a split second there are some
that would say 2015 was a great year
for the City of Manchester in terms of
the works being conducted and led by
The Town Hall of Manchester and I
guess it would be fair to say that the
some would have been Labour themselves.
Out of a possible 96 seats they had
secured on all of them after the final
opposition Councillor Henry Cooper
was banished in 2015. So 2015 became
the year that ‘one state’ was led
by ‘one party’. Now with clear resign
and no sign of any opposition
and a new Labour party Leader Jeremy
Corby it would seem like everything
had landed in a basket and the
Labour members and supporters
could be witnessed as ‘working their
little socks off’ on what was assumed
to be a safe seat. But is there anything
really like a safe seat?
Amongst the public there was a term
being used and it was of a ‘one party

state’ and that sounds scary if it is put
like that as democracy needs opposition
for the ‘check and balance’
process to run in a fair and just manner.
Well don’t just get too comfy there…
The elections of 2016 have spun the
dynamics around. Liberal Democrats

Humza Born on 7 April 1985 in Glasgow ,United Kingdom
He has been involved in community
work, from youth organisations to
charity fundraising, for most of his
life. This included being the Media
Spokesperson for the charity Islamic
Relief, he also volunteered for community
radio for 12 years and on a
project providing food packages to
homeless people and asylum seekers
in Glasgow.
After completing his degree in Politics at the University of Glasgow, he went
to work in the Scottish Parliament with the late Bashir Ahmad MSP. In addition,
he has worked for a number of other MSPs in a variety of roles including
Anne McLaughlin, Nicola Sturgeon and the First Minister, Alex Salmond.
On his election to Parliament in May 2011 he was appointed to the Justice
Committee and Public Audit Committees and has been appointed as a Parliamentary
Liaison Officer to the First Minister Alex Salmond MSP.
Humza Yousaf was awarded the "Future Force of Politics Award 2010" which
was presented to him in Glasgow City Chambers and awarded The Herald's
"One to Watch" Award in 2012.

candidate Mr John Leech has won a
seat from the Didsbury district and all
other seats in the Manchester Town
Hall are that of Labour. Now Councillor
John Leech will be facing 1: 95
so it can be said that, ‘he has his work
cut out’. It seems like an understatement
but it’s an opener. When
analysing what lies ahead on the local
political arena, we can only compare
with world politics and if you know
anything about Asian politics, you
would have witnessed the struggles of
a world loved, ex-cricketer, legend
‘Imran Khan’ as he emerged out of
nowhere on to the political platform
to face one of the toughest oppositions
noted in the Pakistani history.
He continues to pose, face, and strive
on political challenges. So could it
be said that we have a new ‘Imran
Khan V PMNL’ type council? Only
time will tell. At that point we reserve
all judgement, hope for the best
as we live in optimism and offer our
warmest of congratulations for Mr
John Leech’s win and render our
warm wishes for the challenges that
lie ahead of Councillor John Leech
for the betterment of Manchester.
