Чујете некакав једнолични, храпави тон, који се ме ња је ди но повишењем и снижењем, убрзавањем или успоравањем.
Певач, бавећи се спочетка инструментом, одједанпут почиње снажно некакав позив, затим се повуче назад, подиже главу
горе, према небу, и присећајући се, тргне се уз стењање. И одмах затим нагло покреће гудало, да би јаче и снажније за шкрипале
и зајечале струне. Иза тога се из груди певача из вла чи високи тон, који певач задржава, и доста дуго пева ре ци тативом,
док не стигне до патетичног места, од којег поново прекида речи и само зајечи.
У почетку је певао о Бановићу Стра хи њи, и
та песма је без пауза, трајала више од сата. После
те песме ставили су пред певача пола литре вина,
попио га је, поразмислио је мало, и почео нову
песму. Запевао је песму о цару Ла за ру и о његовој
жени царици Ми ли ци, о Косовској бици, где је
погинуо цар и мно го јунака.
Ту већ скоро није било рецитатива: из г овори
два стиха, а затим реч претвара у јецање. А када је
песма стигла до Вука Бран ко вића, који је издао цара
на Косову, и певач отпевао: „Проклето му племе и
колено” — сви су викнули „Про клето!” и поскочили с
места, као да траже издајника целог Српства.

There were several Serbs in the hotel, remarkably
well-built and strong men. One of them had a gusle
(music instrument with one string) and on request of
the others – he started to play his gusle and to sing.
What you could hear is a monotonous, wheezing
tone that changed only by raising and lowering,
speeding up or slowing down. The singer, occupied
with his instrument at the beginning, suddenly forcefully
started some kind of a call, and then he pulled
back, raised his head up, toward the sky, and while
recalling, he roused with moaning. And right away
he forcefully moved the fiddlestick in order to make
the strings sound and creak louder and more powerfully.
After that, from the chest of the singer rose a
high tone, and the singer keeps it while he sings, for a
long time, reciting until he reaches a specific pathetic
place from which he stops again and only moans. At the beginning he sang about Banović Strahinja, and that song, without
breaks, lasted for more than one hour.
After this song they put half a litre of wine in front of the singer, he drank it, was thinking for a moment, and then
started to sing another song. He sang a song about Emperor Lazar and his wife Empress Milica, about the battle of Kosovo
where the emperor and many heroes died.

There was almost no reciting at all: he pronounces two verses, and then he transforms a word into a moan. And
when the song reached the moment when it mentioned Vuk Branković, who betrayed the emperor on Kosovo, the singer
sang: “Let his tribe and heirs be cursed”- and all shouted “Cursed” and jumped up at once, as if looking for the betrayer
of the whole Serbianhood.
