Ровински хвата дух нашег народа готово у лету. У не коли
ко реченица стиче се утисак да је писац одличан психо лог,
те да је за кратко време успео да ослика главне особености
на шег карактера.
„Путујући по Србији стекао сам утисак да је у њој све
при времено, неустаљено, све је у очекивању нечега, сва Ср ­
бија живи уочи нечега, и да је сва у некаквом војничком распо
ложењу. Али истовремено нигде у Србији нисам приметио
ува жавања војничког позива, како се то код нас може срести,
па чак и у Западној Европи.
У једној српској песми девојка бира младожењу и неће
да се уда ни за козара (чобанина), ни за трговца, ни за војника,
али хоће за ратара...”

Када је реч о Британцима, они су до тридесетих година
XIX века ретко обитавали у нашим крајевима. Тада почиње
убрзано ангажовање Велике Британије око решавања Источног
питања, а тада у Београд стиже и први британски конзул. Први
обавештенији, знатижаљнији и систематичнији путник кроз
Србију је Ендру Арчибалд Пејтон (1811–1874). Од њега путопис

Rovinsky grasps the spirit of our people, almost in flight. In
just several sentences one gets the impression the writer is an excellent
psychologist and that, in a short period of time, he managed
to describe the main characteristics of our temperament.
“Travelling across Serbia I got the impression that everything
is temporary here, unusual, everything is in waiting of something, all
of Serbia lives on the eve of something happening, and that the whole
of it is in some kind of military mood. But, at the same time, I haven’t
noticed that the calling of a soldier is respected in Serbia, like it is the
