the horseman fell unconscious. When the ruler of the Soko town
regained consciousness it seemed that all his bones were broken.
He was lying down, hence waiting to die. Slowly and painfully
he stood up so as not to go thirsty to the other world. When
the landlord drank the first sip from a stream that was till then
unknown, his head immediately became clear. When he put his
right hand into the water, he regained the lost strength. When he
saw it, he, clad in the aristocratic vestment, bathed in the stream
and was healed at once, so that when he returned to the town, he
Th e Fl o a t i n g Is l a n d s – It is the only place in Serbia,
situated at 1000 m above sea level with a lake, where the
climate influences the natural balance between the red and white
The lake has several floating islands, which sail across the water
as the year long river, because it is 365 km long. The little river
springs out from the rocks at the foot of Mt. Tara as a spring,
then it flows through the fish pond, and pours its water into two
smaller lakes, eventually joining the Drina River as a waterfall.
Above the waterfall a restaurant has been built.
To p o l a – Topola, a small but renowned town in the Šuma
dija region, was named after the branched tree which stood
at the edge of an intersection of four roads (to Belgrade, Kragujevac,
Rudnik and Šabac). There, by the tree, travelers and caravans
would stop by. Later, a settlement was erected and named,
naturally, after the name of the tree – Topola (Poplar).
St i l t s – On Mt. Homolje, shepherds play football on
stilts, dexterously and skilfully as if they grew up on these extra-long
legs. Sometimes, they dance “Over the Foot” to music
played on a bagpipe. They even, while still on their stilts, pan for
gold in the water of the Pek River, searching for the tiniest par
