гобројнију персијску војску. Иначе,
из држљива римска пе шадија
суочена са нес носном вру ћи ном, жеђу
и неизвесношћу из гу би ла је са мопоуздање
и победнички дух. У таквим
оклонистима започели су налети
број нијег непријатеља, по себно тешке
коњице. Римски редови су пробијени
и битка је била из губљена, а
провинција Месопотамија пала у ру ке
Персијанаца.
Поједини извори, хронолошки удаље
нији од ових до гађаја, попут Еутропија
и Амијана Марцелина говоре о Диок лецијановој
срџби на кон овог пораза и
наређењу да Галерија иде миљама пешице
иза својих кола. Сматра се, ме ђутим,
да ова прича не стоји, јер код Лактанција,
савременика ових догађаја,
не ма по да така о овом понижењу Га ле рија,
које би, овај њему ненаклоњен писац, сигурно забе ле жио
и надограђивао.

That same year, Narses began a military campaign
against Rome by attacking Mesopotamia. Diocletian,
with confidence, installed Galerius as
commander of the eastern army, but the war
started unsuccessfully for the Roman state.
Galerius, with an insufficient and
unprepared army crossed the river Euph rates
near Callincus and in the area between
this part of the river and the hill of Carrhe
encountered a much larger Persian army.
Generally resilient Roman infantry faced
with unbearable heat, thirst and incertitude
lost self-confidence and the winning spirit. Under
those circumstances the attacks from a much
larger enemy started, especially attacks by the
armed cavalry. Roman frontlines were broken, the
battle was lost, and the province of Mesopotamia
fell into Persian hands.
Certain sources, which are in chronological terms
far from these events, such as Eutropius and Ammianus
Marcellinus, speak about Diocletian’s anger
after this defeat and his order by which Galerius was
supposed to walk for miles behind his chariot. It is
considered, though, that this story isn’t true, Lactancius
as a contemporary of these events doesn’t
inform us about Galerius’ humiliation in his notes, an odd occurrence
for one who never really favoured Galerius in the first
