HERDSMAN AMONG GODS
Галерије, царског имена G.Valerius Maximianus Galerius, ро ђен
је средином III века н.е. на малом пољском добру, можда под
име ном Секундинијана (Secundiana) у провинцији Приобалној
Дакији (Dacia Ripensis). Његови родитељи су насељени у ову
об ласт са простора источне Дакије, где су били изложени сталним
насртајима ратоборних Карпа. У новом завичају, опустелом
од варварских упада и црнотраге куге, отац породице, чије име
није сачувано, бавио се разноврсним пословима које, прет ходно
запуштено, сељачко имање изискује. Мајка Ро му ла, под чијим
скутом и старатељском бригом је Галерије ра стао и васпитаван,
била је предани поклоник планинских бо жан става и вршила
свештеничку дужност.
У раној младости Галерије је чувао стоку и стекао нади
мак Говедар (Armentarius) кога се никада није одрекао наслутивши
у њему епитет и природу Силвана, шумског бо жанства
поштованог у сеоским срединама, вероватно и његовом
скромном дому, и пасторални пијетет Ромула, најславнијег
рим ског пастира, чије ће име Галерије, након тријумфа над
Пер сијанцима, са поносом носити.
Не може се са сигурношћу реконструисати Галеријева
вој ничка каријера (cursus honorum); вероватно је то био уз лет ­
ни ход остварен мачем, неузмицањем, подвигом, задатом реч ју,
војничком врлином. Он је и пре проглашења за цезара 293. го дине,
био у самом војном врху при Дио кле ци јановом двору и већ
тада је ус пос тављао сигурност на, навек не мир ној, гра ници на
Galerius, of the imperial name G. Valerius Maximianus Galerius,
was born in the middle of the 3 rd century A.D, on a
small field property, which was perhaps Secundiana in the province
of Dacia (Dacia Ripensis). His parents settled in this area after
coming from the lands of the Eastern Dacia, where they were
exposed to repeated assaults of the bellicose Carpi. In the new
homeland, devastated by barbarian invasions and fatal plague, a
father of the family, his name unknown, did various jobs that a
previously abandoned peasant farm property demanded. Mother
Romula, under whose care and influence Galerius was raised,
was a devoted pilgrim of the mountain deities and she performed
the duties of a paganist priestess.
In his early youth, Galerius raised the cattle and obtained
the nickname “herdsman” (Armentarius), the nickname he never
rejected, feeling in it the extol and nature of Silvan, a forest god
worshiped in village environments and probably in his own modest
home, as well as in the pastoral piety of Romulus, the most
celebrated Roman shepherd, whose name Galerius took proudly
after his triumph over the Persians.
Galerius’s military career (cursus honorum) can’t be reconstructed
with certitude; most likely it was an ascending road
achieved by sword, without retreat, by feat, given word, and
military discipline. He was, even before becoming a Caesar in
293 A.D., among the top ranked military members at Diocletian’s
court and even then he succeeded to establish peace on the al­
