Temple, are especially important. During the same period, in the
middle of the second decade of the 14 th century, the Church of
Saint Nikita in Čučer was built. It was painted by fresco painters
Mihailo Astrapa and Evtihije. Chronologically, King Milutin’s next
endowment was the Church of Saint George in Staro Nagoričino.
It contains a large number of fresco cycles depicting the Liturgical
Feasts, Christ’s Passion, His Miracles and Public Ministry, the
Menologhion, the cycle about the life of Saint George, as well
as others. The painters Mihailo and Evtihije were in charge of
a painter’s studio that functioned within the court of King Milutin
and was in turn responsible for painting many of his endowments.
After painting the church in Staro Nagoričino the painters
moved to Gračanica, Milutin’s final endowment.
Many consider the church in Gračanica Serbia’s most beautiful
medieval church. In the past it was dedicated to the Annunciation
but today it stands as a dedication to the Dormition of the
Virgin Mary. The pyramid-like silhouette crowned with a tall main
dome draws out the verticality of the building. Inspired by Jesse’s
Family Tree, a similar composition was painted for the first time in
Serbian art, this time of the Nemanjić Family Tree. The portraits of
the founder in old age and his young wife Simonida, “a porphyry
born lady”, are of special significance as well.
King Milutin completely renovated the main church or
katholicon of the monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos. At the
same time, work on fortifying the monastery was completed, as
well as construction of the Hrusija Pirg (“pyrgoi” in Greek means
towers) with a Chapel of the Holy Saviour. Due to Milutin’s endeavours,
the wealth of the monastery was significantly enlarged.
Following the model of the older churches on Mount Athos, specifically
those in Lavra, Ivrion and Vatopediou, the main church
in Hilandar has a cruciform floor plan, with a tripartite sanctuary
and two apses added to the sides of the nave.
Differing from his previous endowments, King Milutin had
his mausoleum, the Church of Saint Stefan in Banjska, modelled
after the Church of Theotokos in Studenica, the mausoleum
church for the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty.
Master builders and craftsmen came from around the Adriatic
coast areas. The church of St. Stefan is a single nave church
with a dome, tripartite sanctuary on the east side, high choir bays
