Манастир Дечани круна је српског црквеног градитељства. Можда Сопоћани имају лепше фреске, можда је Грача
ни ца у свом степенастом ходу ка небу архитектонски значајнија, Жича историјски релевантнија, а Студеница
заувек прва у низу, али нигде као у Дечанима није осликана таква и толика галерија фресака – има их преко хиљаду.
И рађене су више од петнаест година. Чуда Христова осликана су на преко двадесет сцена, страдање Исусово у
тридесет, ос ликан је циклус преко двадесет слика које илуструју стихове из Химне Богородичине. Тристашездесет
пет слика, дан по дан, црквени календар, приказана су житија светог Николе и светог Ђорђа, а њима су придодати
циклуси фресака о животима св. Јована Претече и св. Димитрија, седамнаест слика плаши нас сценама из Страшног
суда, приказани су сви Васељенски сабори, безбројне су фреске инспирисане Делима апостолским и Књигом по стања...„Ту
је осликана цела једна сликарска епопеја о хришћанству”, каже Милан Кашанин, „права енциклопедија
хриш ћанства”. К томе, нигде, ни у Србији, ни у Европи, на зидовима једне цркве, не постоји тако фас цина н тан број
фигура обичних смртника и грешника у сценама живота на Земљи. И још са толиким осећањем за детаљ!
Истовремено, уз галерију фресака, велика је и добро очувана галерија скулпторских украса и пластике – са
неколико стотина рељефа и скулптура, „Вито мали брат” из Котора, који је Дечанску цркву зидао од 1327. до 1335,
по ставио је, још увек недостижан, врх српске скулптуре. У којој су најдоминантнији безбројни прикази лавова, поне
ки анђео и бројне фантастичне животиње и птице, с асоцијацијама на Страшни суд.
The monastery of Dečani is the crown of the Serbian sacral architecture. Perhaps Sopoćani has prettier frescos, maybe
Gračanica in its gradual stepping toward sky is more important in architectural sense. Žiča is historically more relevant,
and Studenica will be the first in line forever, but nowhere like in Dečani was painted such a large gallery of frescosmore
than one thousand. And they were painted over a period of more than 15 years. Miracles of Christ are painted in more
than 20 scenes, Passion of Christ in 30 scenes, the verses from the Hymn to the Virgin Mary are illustrated in a cycle with
more than 20 scenes. Three-hundred sixty-five frescos, one for each day, illustrate the church’s yearly calendar, the lives
of Saint Nicolas and Saint George are illustrated as well and to them were added fresco cycles describing the lives of Saint
John Baptist and Saint Dimitrios, seventeen paintings frighten us with the scenes of the Last Judgment, then all Orthodox
Church councils are illustrated as well, and numerous frescos are inspired with the Acts of the Apostles and the Book
of Genesis…”Here is painted the whole epochal painting of Christianity” says Milan Kašanin, in the “real encyclopedia
of Christianity”. In addition, nowhere else, not anywhere else in Serbia or in Europe exists, on the walls of a single
church, such a fascinating number of painted figures of mortal people and sinners in
the scenes that illustrate
life on Earth. And with such sensibility for details!
At the same time, in addition to the gallery of frescos, is a well preserved gallery
of sculptural decoration – with several hundred reliefs and sculptures, “Vito,
Friars Minor” from Kotor, who built the church in Dečani from 1327 to 1335,
set up, yet unmatched, the pinnacle of Serbian sculpture. In this sculpture
ensemble, the most dominant are countless images of
lions, several angels and numerous fantastic animals
and birds with allusions to the Last Judgment.
