Hate Speech and Violence Against Serbs in 2015
History” was presented in Glina on February 12. Writing about
the Jasenovac camp, Vuković discusses “war victims (numbers)
blown out of proportion” and particularly elaborates on the
“myth about the alleged Ustasha slaughter at the Orthodox
church in Glina.” 20 During the presentation of the book, war veteran
Andrija Marić shouted: “War in these parts will end with the
victorious Croatian army’s parade on Terazije.” 21
A National Ethical Court, (an unofficial body established in 2014),
condemned in several public “court hearings” a number of public
figures for ‘national treason’. In April 2015, the court “ruled”
against former president Stjepan Mesić, former minister Vesna
Pusić and parliament member Milorad Pupovac. “It is hard to
predict the effect of this verdict, but one thing is certain, such
persons should not be holding their present posts. Vesna Pusić
started working against Croatian national interests already as
a young person and as for Stjepan Mesić, together with Pusić
he sided with Serbia and started equalising the victim and the
aggressor... On the other hand, we have Milorad Pupovac who
is abusing his position as a parliament deputy to spread Chetnik
ideas, he is charged with Chetnik high treason...” Zvonimir
Šeparović explained this decision for the Dnevno.hr website.
20 Not long after they took
power, Ustasha called on
the population of Vrginmost
district to convert to
Catholicism. They tried to
convince the Serbs that the
conversion would save their
lives. Although they were
suspicious about the promise,
1,500 inhabitants took heed
at the end of July 1941. The
Ustasha took them to Glina
on trucks, shut them inside
the local Orthodox church
and killed them with cold
steel
On April 10, the date marking the declaration of the NDH, a
celebration was held in Split to mark the anniversary of forming
the right-wing HOS militia, which had taken part in the 1991–1995
war in Croatia and which has a monument in the city. The
Mayor of Split, Ivo Baldasar, sent an envoy with a wreath to
attend the event. On May 16 the 70th anniversary was held
to commemorate the execution of the defeated NDH military
members and civilian supporters. The HDZ party leadership
led by Tomislav Karamarko and Milijan Brkić attended the
commemoration. President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović sent her
representative Bruna Esih to pay tribute to the victims. Also
present were leaders of the HDSSB, led by Branimir Glavaš, and
the war veterans who had staged the prolonged protests at
Savska street in Zagreb. This commemoration abounded in the
proscribed Ustasha iconography, as evidenced by a photograph
of Velimir Bujanec, host of the obscure Bujica TV show, in which
he proudly posed next to a flag featuring the NDH coat-of-arms
and an embroidered “U” letter.
According to Izvor, a journal issued by the Joint Council of
Municipalities, Ustasha symbols were also seen in the very
centre of Vukovar, where a flag was hung on a private house
