In the same month, several days after international media published
photographs of the swastika drawn on the grass of Split’s
Poljud stadium, large graffiti with the same symbol appeared in
Solin (near Split). In the town of Trilj, two 16-year old boys and
one 20-year old youth drew 16 swastikas and six “U” letters with
red spray on the facade of a local school.
On August 26 graffiti calling for violence against Serbs also
appeared on several buildings used by Serbs in Vukovar’s main
shopping centre, Tržni Centar: “Kill the Serb”, “Merry Ustasha”,
“We Croats Await You” and the Ustasha “U”, the swastika and
a number of Nazi symbols and offensive words.
The portal of the Serb Bussines Association Privrednik published
photographs from Gornji Karin 15 in the same month. Apart from
the fact that some houses still carry inscriptions “Off limits,
Croat property”, fresh graffiti were sprayed containing Ustasha
and Nazi symbols and the words “Ustasha” and “NDH”. In nearby
Benkovac signposts were scribbled over. Unknown perpetrator
used black spray to cross the names of the villages populated
by Serbs including Biljane Donje and Kula Atlagić. At the end of
the year the “U” was drawn on a signpost at the entrance to the
town of Glina.
