Within this paper justfour of the most used types are presented (the autocratic, bureaucratic, charismatic and the democraticleadership type).Autocratic LeadershipAutocratic leadership is an extreme form of leadership, where a leader exerts high levels of power overhis employees or team members. All the power is in the hands of one man. It is a system ofpunishments and rewards. The autocratic leader is superior. People within the team are given fewopportunities for making suggestions, even if these would be in the team's or organization's interest. Most people tend to resent being treated like this.Positive effect: For some routine and unskilled jobs this style can be effective where the advantages ofcontrol outweigh the disadvantages.Negative effect: Autocratic leadership usually leads to high levels of absenteeism and staff turnover. Also, the team's output does not benefit from the creativity and experience of all team members, somany of the benefits of teamwork are lost.Bureaucratic LeadershipBureaucratic leaders "work by the book", ensure that their staffs follow procedures exactly.Positive effect: This is a very appropriate style for work involving serious safety risks (such asworking with machinery, with toxic substances or at heights).Negative effect: In other situations, the inflexibility and high levels of control exerted can demoralizestaff, and can diminish the organizations ability to react to changing external circumstances.Charismatic LeadershipA charismatic leadership style is tied up with the great charisma of the leader and the motivation thatleader gives to the followers.Positive effect: It injects huge doses of enthusiasm into the team, and is very energetic in drivingothers forward.486M&S 8(2013)
