FERNANDEZ, ReflectionsThe feast of the baptism of Jesus,which we celebrated last Sunday,officially ended the Christmas seasonwhich culminated in our celebrationof the Birth of the Savior andthe Messiah. God choose to comeinto this world as a small and fragilechild, a powerless creature and to beborn in a rather lowly place in thelittle and obscure town of Bethlehemwhich means house of Bread.All this he did because of His Humilityand Great Love. God condescendedto become not only a smallbread which is the sacrament of hisreal presence or parousia but also asmall and vulnerable child to beEmmanuel. Indeed Christianity isfull of paradoxes.Today we celebrate the Feast of Sto.Niño and this is to remember Christcoming into this world as a smallchild to be one among us. His comingas such just brings to light theimportance we have to give to ourchildren and their well-being.Upon hearing the news of whathappened to our dearest Macky lastFriday, I was terribly shocked. Mixedemotions kept on hitting me. As Imoved out from disbelief, memoriescame rushing in...I have been thankful to the OngoingProgram of the Parish YouthMinistry… “The Gathering.” The verymoment we started this program lastOctober, that also became the verymoment we knew Macky.Since then, he became the apple of thegroup’s eyes. It was not because of hiscondition. It was because of his rarity.Rarity in the sense of service to theLord. We knew him much more whenwe had our Youth Encounter.And since YE He became one of our avidtalk givers (if not the best of our avidtalk givers). In spite of his fragile healthcondition, he became the mostpersevering member of the YE team.Cold and hunger were never a hindranceto him in his efforts to touch everyyouth’s heart and soul in the barangays.He was a good friend too. I am sureof that because he was one of mineand a lot more will justify. He was aToday’s Gospel of mark shows theimportance and value that Jesus givesto children. in other words they havea special place in His Heart. Here wesee people bringing their children tothe Lord and this draws an adversereaction from his disciples. They wantthe people to keep their children away.They most probably do not want tosee their master disturbed by the noiseof Children.However, there is a much greater likelihoodthat their action is dictated bythe prevailing view in regard to childrenin Jewish society. Children areconsidered unimportant, having norights of their own and viewed as ofhaving no practical value. Recognizingtheir worth and dignity, Jesuswants them to come to him and soHe tells His disciples not to stand inthe way of their coming to Him. Oncehe has the children, Jesus takes themin His arms, puts His hand on eachone of them, and blesses them.This country has a special devotionto the Sto. Niño as shown by the variousfestive celebrations associated toit like the Sinulog, the Ate-Atehan,the Dinagyang, etc. Many peoplefriend one can truly rely on in timesof needs.I wish I have a gift of words -- to betterdescribe Macky (Mac-Mac to many).With few I can muster, here are some:kind, responsible, idealistic, humble,thoughtful, and loving are just few ofthe many more adjectives that wouldsuit him.But, he is gone now. He has returnedto the home he has longed for.Behind the feeling of loneliness anddespair, there is still a part of methat is a bit relieved because Iknow that right now, he is alreadywith the Someone he so faithfullyloved and served. He is at home -back home.With us now, are Macky’s eyes, hisvery good heart and loving prayers,which will see us through our journeyand lead us to the right path towardsthe Kingdom of God.Macky, thank you for stepping in andbecoming a part our lives.We will never forget how muchyou’ve touched and renewed us.We will miss you terribly!have even their own Sto. Niño imagesand try to have them garbed elegantlyor have them dressed like apriest, a fireman, a policeman, a lawyer,etc. Yes, we take good care of ourreligious images.Honoring the Sto. Niño is not onlythrough these celebrations which wehave or through the statues of theSto. Niño which we keep in ourhomes or put up in other places. Wecan do more than all this. Our celebrationand devotion for them tobecome more meaningful should leadus to take care of our children. Thereis something more important thanthe lifting of the image of the Sto.Niño being paraded in the streets andthe shouting of Viva Sr. Sto. Niño.The Sto. Niño is right there in ouryoung Children.The Sto. Niño is there in our childrenwho are untidy, unattended unguided,unclothed, etc. Children, vulnerableand helpless as they are need our love,attention, guidance, protection, andcare. Honesty and integrity iswhat we sorely need in public life. Honesty,sad to say, seems to be as hard tofind as a needle in the haystack.Our family is considered the First seminaryas it is where we can inculcate moraland spiritual values on our children. Itis said that education begins at home.The best time to instill or cultivate exemplaryvalues is during their impressionableyears. It is difficult to bend atree when it is already old and to teachan old dog new tricks.When George Washington, the firstAmerican president , was just a smallboy, he unintentionally he cut a youngcherry tree. When the father arrivedhome, he admitted having done it and sothe father instead of being angry aboutit was happy and praised him for tellingthe truth for it would mean he wouldgrow up as honest man.Moreover, our children need our timeor presence. What happens sometimesis that we spend more time with ourfriends or barkadas and our work or engagingin gambling or other vices. It islamentable that we sometimes have toleave our family for abroad for an obviousreason. You know however nobleour purpose seems to be, what we dooftentimes has unpleasant repercussionson our children. This matter, then, deserveslet alone bears a closer look if nota second thought.The Sto. Niño is also there in the childrenroaming in the city begging or inthose lying down or sleeping on sidewalks.These little ones victims of parentalexploitation, objects of sexual abuse,and a potential source of juvenile delinquencyand hard labor. What bright futureis in store for them? What can we orour society dot o address this problem?Sure enough the Sto. Niño is also therein the unborn. Life begins at conception.But how many abortions have been resortedto? Does it not rend our hearts tokill an innocentAnd guiltless one? To do so just smacksof our selfishness and being irresponsible.We do not corrected error by doinganother mistake. We are just jumpingfrom the frying fan to the fire andthere will be a conscience to bother usfor the rest of our life.The Feast of the Sto.
