English Booster Dose 35Nr 7-8 / 2008Take your booster dose of English! This is our next meeting with three friends. You can refresh your English whilereading about their everyday life. This time we may read about windsurfing.WindsurfingJan: What have you planned for this holiday? Another exotic journey or something totally different?Tom: Well, another challenge. At least it’s going to be a challenge for me.Jan: A challenge? What are you going to do? Climb K2 or something?Tom: No, no. It’ll have nothing to do with the heights but could be extreme, too. I’ve decided to learn to windsurf.Jan: Windsurfing? Aren’t you…Tom: Too old?Jan: Well…Tom: I don’t think it’s only the sport for teens. I’m quite fit and I’m a good swimmer, so I’m sure I’ll manage. Besides, windsurfing is the most amazing of sports.Jan: Why?Tom: Because it combines the thrills of surfing, the tranquility of sailing. You can either go off by yourself for someamazing peace of mind, or sail with a crowd of 200 other windsurfers. I believe that no sport other than thiscan give the unbeatable feeling of being out in the open, gliding effortlessly over beautiful, clear waters.Jan: It sounds like poetry. I must say you really got bitten by the windsurfing bug before you even started to do it.Tom: Oh, come on. I mean it. Windsurfers are in general a very nice bunch of people; helpful and always willing tochat. I met a few on my vacations. And windsurfing is definitely good for you. Both physically and mentally.Even in the lightest of winds, windsurfing is an active enough sport to leave you pleasantly exhausted at theend of a good day. Then you’ll have no problems with falling asleep and you’ll get up refreshed next day.Jan: You seem to be very enthusiastic.Tom: When you windsurf, you can empty your mind. All other worries and stresses will disappear while you’re outon the water. I can just enjoy the sensations of being afloat. I need this after a year of hard work.Jan: You’ve almost convinced me, but I’d rather listen to your windsurfing stories when you’re back than try itmyself.Tom: It would do good to you too.Jan: You know me. I’m rather a coach potato than a sportsman.Tom: You can always change it.Jan: Well, not this summer.Don’t forgetchallenge – wyzwanieclimb K2 – wspiąć się na K2the heights – wysokościextreme – ekstremalnyteens – nastolatkicombine – łączyćthrills – dreszcze; emocjetranquility – spokójamazing – zdumiewający; niezwykłypeace of mind – spokój umysłuunbeatable – bezkonkurencyjny; nie do pobiciaglide effortlessly – sunąć bez wysiłkugot bitten by the windsurfing bug – połknąłeś bakcyla windsurfingubunch of people – paczka/gromada ludziactive enough sport – wystarczająco aktywny sportexhausted – wyczerpanyempty your mind – opróżnić umysłworries – zmartwieniaafloat – na wodzieconvince – przekonaćcoach potato – osoba, która siedzi na sofie przed telewizorem; „tele-leń”Drodzy Czytelnicy!Mamy nadzieję, że zaciekawiła Was nasza propozycja krótkich spotkań z językiem angielskim.
