WHO IS YOUR NEIGHBOR____________STEVE C. FERNANDEZ, REFLECTIONSIn today’s Gospel Jesus tells us theParable of the Good Samaritan. Herea certain lawyer, that is a teacher ofthe Torah or the Law of Moses, comesto Jesus asking Him what he will doto gain eternal life. Jesus, rather thananswering him, asks him what thelaw says. In reply the lawyer says:“Love God with all your heart, withall your being, with all your strength,and with all your mind and love yourneighbor as you love yourself. “Thenhe asks the Lord if who his neighboris. Yes, the lawyer knows only the firstpart of the law but does not know whohis neighbor is.In the Old, Testament who one’sneighbor is can be found in Leviticus19 which says: “Do not bear grudgesor vengeance against the sons yourpeople and love your neighbors as youlove yourself. “Under the New Covenantthe term neighbor is extendedby Jesus.In the story a man who is a Jew isbadly beaten by robbers on the tortuousroad which goes up and downbetween Jericho and Jerusalem. Thebandit leaves him bleeding and is presumeddead. The very first person topass is priest who is coming homefrom temple. On seeing him he goesto the opposite side to avoid him, thenext to come at the scene is anotherreligious figure a Levite. Sadly thesame thing happens. He comes by thishalf-dead fellow without lifting a fingerto help him. Finally a Samaritan,who is a half-Jew, turns up. In spiteof the gulf between Jews and Samaritans,this fellow comes to the aid ofthis dying man, takes acre of him, putshim back on his feet, and takes himto an inn to save his life basically.But why do the priest and the Levite,who are both church people, skirt thebloody man? Surely their act stemsfrom ritual purification. Contact withblood makes one ritually impure orunclean especially for temple worship.These two religious figures try to passover this hapless and helpless man becausethey do not want to get defiled.What Jesus is trying to protect is thekind of church people or religiousleaders during His time. Jesus wassquarely at odds with and highly criticalof this people let alone the practicesand activities in church.There were too much formality andliturgy. This is what Jesus oftentimestook issue with. God can not bear withthe external formality. Observed bythe people in His time. Jesus could notput up with the kind of worship whichwas filled with strict formalism thatenslaved and tied the people. Externalismand formalism was asmokescreen for the real problems besetting the people a way out of gettinginvolved in all this. Everything inchurch was given form and madebeautiful but the well-being of thepeople was being forgotten or neglected.This was the kind of churchwhich Jesus found in His time.God denounced these church peoplefor their indifference and sensitivity tothe plight of the poor, the widows, andthe oppressed. Jesus, uttering thewords of Hosea, would repeatedly say:“I want mercy, not your scarifies.“Yes, what would please God wastheir mercy and not you’re burnt animalofferings.There is much deeper person whythese two religious figures turn a blindeye to this victim of bandits. What theypractice is a religious which is not true,a religion which has no heart andcompassion for the poor and theneedy. These church people are filledwith insensitivity and callousness’ andso are oblivious to the needs and plightof the other people. They are immersedin prayer and in worship andyet they do not have the mercy andcompassion of God. Theirs is but afalse church.The same things are true with someof us Christians. There are those whoare close to the church, very religiousand yet have no compassion for thepoor and the needy. Their religiouslife if far from their actual life in relationto serving and helping those whoare in need. There is a dichotomy betweena life of prayer and worship anda life of helping the poor. They see Godor Jesus at the altar but can not see theliving God in a poor and needy person.The Samaritan on the other hand actsrather differently towards the half deadman. On seeing him, he immediatelyfeels in his heart the mercy and compassionof God and so he comes to hisaid. To this foreigner, love has to takeprecedence over other things, transcendingrituals and racial barrier or divide.Finally Jesus asks the lawyer who hethinks is neighbor to this man whowas robbed. “The man who showsmercy,” he says in reply. Indeed thisSamaritan fulfills the law as embodiedin this line: “Be merciful even asyour Father in heaven is merciful.”After the lawyer gives the rights answer.Jesus exhorts him to go and dosame. So to Jesus neighbor is everyoneespecially one who is in need.Under the New Covenant which Jesuscame to establish neighbor is everybodyof all races and of all places? Sowe have to be neighbor to every onewho is in need.In a battle between Filipino and Japanesetroops during the last global wasa Japanese soldier was mortallywounded. A chaplain manifested hisintention to help the wounded soldierbut before he could do so some Filipinosoldiers came to him in protest,saying: “Father, Japon ina. The priestreplied: “When Christ died on thecross, He did not just die for Filipinosand Japanese but for all. The chaplainrushed forward and helped him,nursing his wounded and giving himwater to drink. Unfortunately a bombfell near them which kill both of them.We must learn not just to sympathizebut also to empathize. Empathy is reallyputting our self in the situationor place of another who has a problemor who is in need. We take hisproblem for own so that we do somethingto bail him out of trouble. Letus try to be always available to thosein need. These people are our way togain eternal life. Our commitment tolove for God can be measured by howwe relate ourselves to them. Jesus willalways tells us that whatever we doto the lest of our brother that we dounto Him. Yes, the true religion is thereligion of life and not the religion ofbeautiful words, beautiful rituals, andformalities in the church.
