MUDr. Josef Kautzner, CSc., FESCÚvod: Objective: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common arrhythmias in human withprevalence reaching 1-2 %. Both experimental and clinical data suggest that AF leads to electrical,contractile and structural remodeling. Structural remodeling that results predominantly in atrial fibrosisis believed to be associated with maintenance of AF and its progressive character. Apart from collageninvolved in atrial fibrosis, there are a number of other extracellular molecules.Cíl: Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate elastin in atrial tissue of patients with AF.Materiál a metody: Methods: Myocardial elastin expression was studied in the left atrial (LA) and rightatrial (RA) biopsies, sampled from patients with persistent AF (18 patients) or in sinus rhythm (SR, 29patients) during coronary bypass or mitral valve surgery. The expression of elastin gene, using thereal-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and counting relative quantification (RQ) of elastin m-RNA, was analyzed in both groups. Parallel tissue samples were used for immunohistological staining.Morphometric evaluation using image analysis software compared elastin fibre fraction in themeasured myocardial volume (EVF) between AF and SR samples.Výsledky: Results: Morphometric analysis showed significantly higher elastin fraction in the RAmyocardium as compared to the LA samples, independently of the presence or absence of AF (EVF10.59% vs 3.54%, p
