ENGLISH VERSIONMoringa: Plant this important tree for betternutrition and health.By Zakayo KayuriMoringa is an important tree. When it isplanted in your yard, it can provide youwith shade and can meet many of yournutritional needs. It also can help purify your waterthrough its dried, powdered leaves. It has evenmore medicinal, economic and nutritional benefits.Moringa leaves provide amazing nutritional value,providing:1. Three times more iron than spinach.2. As much protein as eggs.3. Four times more vitamins A than carrots.4. Four times more calcium than milk .5. Seven times more vitamin C than oranges.6. Three times more potassium than bananas.Moringa can treat ailments, purify water, andfeed the hungry.Lack of safe drinking water is one of world’sbiggest health threats. Pressed moringa seeds canturn dirty water into clean purified water moreeconomically than imported chemicals. Mix 2 largespoons full of ground morning seeds with 20 litersof water. Stir or shake the water for 2 minutesrapidly, then 10 minutes slowly. Dirt and manybacteria will then settle from the water along withmoringa, and can be filtered out.Moringa’s medicinal qualities are alsopromising. Moringa can be effective against skininfections, in lowering blood sugar, reducing swelling, healing gastric ulcers, lowering blood pressure andeven calming the nervous system.Moringa makes an efficient fuel, organicfertilizer and livestock feed. It’s one of the most useful trees, as you cansee from all of the benefits above. TIST farmers, why wait? When we grow moringa in TIST, we earncarbon credits and can enjoy all of the other benefitselaborated above.Let each of us plant at least one!Help Your Cluster Get All Groves Baselined. As part of carbon market requirements, allgroups registered in TIST must have theirgroves baselined and validated. The grovesmust have accurate tracks that show where treesare planted. External auditors do the validation, checking the data to make sure it is accurate andcomplete. Validation is an important, required stepin the carbon business. It helps assure carbon creditbuyers and carbon market regulators that the workthe TIST farmers are doing is real, actual and meetsthe markets standards.Today, there are 41,000 groves in Kenya, 29,000groves have been validated. Some have been verified. Verification, as namesuggests, verifies the amount of carbon sequesteredby TIST farmers trees. It is only after verificationthat TIST can sell carbon credits and earn incomefor the farmers. However, TIST must demonstrateaccuracy, transparency and honesty for the datacorrected.Out of 12,000 remaining groves, 4,500 grovesare ready but 7,000 groves are not yet ready. Outof 7,000 groves remaining, 1,068 groves are“priority” groves.TIST is therefore, calling upon all members tohelp and support Quantifiers in Quantification thatinclude good baselines and tracks for these grovesas soon as possible. If all groves are fully baselinedby the end of this month (October, 2012), we willrequest Validators to come and audit them nextmonth or in December. Please organize to havemembers of your cluster show Quantifiers wheregroves are and be ready to answer their questions. The table below shows the name of clustersand groves that require urgent and immediatebaseline. Please discuss in your cluster ways thatyou can have these groves attended this week ornext. Also, talk to your quantifier and find out if he/she has done them, or if s/he requires additionalhelp to complete them. TIST Leadership Counciland US Team are ready to help you.5
