communist rebels set up camp, displacing theHigaunon natives. During skirmishes between therebels and the military, 10 Higaunon families in Sioandecided to leave the place. They at first hesitatedleaving behind all they had, but the three-hourfirefight helped hasten their decision to leave. Theystarted walking as soon as gunshots stopped. Theirdestination – Mimbahandi, where they were warmlywelcomed by Datu Sinaligan himself.Just when everybody thought that hostilities inSio-an had stopped, the Higaunon leader in the area,Datu Binungkasan, was killed by still unidentifiedassailants in December of that year. The terror ofthe datu’s death caused 17 families to immediatelyleave Sio-an and walked towards Mimbahandi. Likethe earlier group, Ruben welcomed them withoutquestion nor hesitation. He explains that many of the Higaunons aredestitute as they have continually been displacedfrom their lands by various forces, including theDumagats (people from the lowlands), the rebelsand the military.Ruben is lucky enough to have inherited vasttracks of lands from his parents. But in the Higaunonculture, lands are not to be owned, but to be shared bythe community. He thus offered his parcels of land tothe evacuees for them to till and grow food.Venice and Miana Mangominia, a youngHigaunon couple, are overwhelmed by DatuSinaligan’s generosity. “Datu Ruben has not onlyoffered us his dwelling but also a piece of land thatwe can till so our family can have food,” says theshy Venice.Datu Sinaligan would at times go to many placesapproaching many people asking for assistance, even to the point of begging for food, not forhimself nor his family, but for the evacuees whohave come to him for help.Datu Sinaligan’s unselfish act is the best proofof human goodness. While it may be difficult to takethe “rodent’s path” on the way to Ruben’s place, thischieftain makes sure that those who come to seekhis help will be welcomed and taken care of, even ifit means giving up some of his comforts.Mga Sugilanon sa Pagpanday og Kalinaw sa Katilingban 65
