For their safety, the children were sent to thechapel as the parents and the other adults confrontedthe armed men face to face.As chairman of the village cooperative, Eric wastasked by the members of the community to makethe call. “They wanted me to decide, to either stopthe demolition team by force, or to simply watchthem destroy our homes,” Eric said. It was difficultfor him to choose either way.In the end, Eric believed it was better for themto be homeless than to have orphans in their midst,as violence was sure to erupt. The villagers had theirweapons, yes, but these were certainly no match tothe police’s high-powered firearms. What followed was forever etched in thevillagers’ minds, as their homes crumbled one byone in the hands of the demolition team. They couldonly plead, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.Jean May Pugta, now 13, recalled how difficultit was for her to take the 20 or so steps from theirhome to the chapel, as she was wailing watchingthe armed men destroying their home, at the sametime turning back to look for her twin sister, herfather and mother in the crowd. Her mother wasthen clutching her one-year-old brother amidst thechaos.“Our house was being destroyed by men whomI didn’t know,” says Jean. “They were accompaniedby some police.”For fouår long months thereafter, the 15evicted families lived in the 11x18-meter chapelin the neighborhood, sharing everything amongthemselves – from the floor space to sleepon, to the food, the comfort room, includingthe common feeling of anger, frustration andhopelessness that came out from the defeat andhomelessness. The children, who witnessed the demolition, had anger in their hearts. They hated the policefor siding with the people who destroyed theirhomes. In a debriefing session, which was part of apeace transformation program conducted by BalayMindanaw for the children of Sitio Dumayukdok, the demolition’s traumatic effect was expressed intheir recollection of the demolition – most of theirdrawings were of their homes. As far as Eric and the other families in thevillage could recall, the first generation owner of theland had allowed their parents to occupy the land.As occupants, the 15 families had been faithful withtheir obligation to the owner. They were surprised, however, in 1982 whenthe son of the owner demanded for them to leavetheir homes because he would use the land. Theysuspected it was because of the bounty of lanzonestrees that the occupants have grown. Eric recallsthe beginning of their ordeal when the secondgeneration owner filed a legal case against one oftheir neighbors. When the land owner won andsucceeded in ejecting the occupant from the land, hestarted the legal battles against the rest. In 2004, theoccupants lost the battle in court. Eric said that theytrusted their lawyer too much that he didn’t botherMga Sugilanon sa Pagpanday og Kalinaw sa Katilingban 45
