particular countries. However, substantial increase in the total volume ofremittances is unquestionable (see Appendix B.1).From geographical point of view, developing countries are the dominantrecipient of inward remittances (see Table 9). However, it is necessary to stressthat the least developed countries lag in the absolute volume of inwardremittances 46 , implying higher figures for Asian and Latin American regionsthan for Sub-Saharan Africa (see Table 10) with little assumptions for anychange. At the national level, Mexico, India, China, Philippines and France werethe top five recipient countries of remittances in 2006. On the contrary, USA,Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Germany and Spain were the top five sourcecountries of remittances in 2005, both rankings based on estimations of WorldBank. Such a situation clearly demonstrates strong ties between neighbouringcountries USA and Mexico, the importance of Saudi Arabia as the oil power forguest workers, position of Germany or Spain as countries with extremely strongmigrants’ communities or increasing importance of emerging superpowersChina and India in the global economy.Table 9Distribution of workers’ remittances, compensation of employees, and migranttransfers according to division of countries based on income (selected years)Type of countries 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006Low income 21.792 25.897 32.048 39.572 40.534 45.815 46.785Middle income 63.439 70.451 84.649 105.444122.642142.355152.313High income 46.551 50.667 52.991 59.655 67.319 69.326 69.326World 131.786147.015169.688204.671230.495257.496268.424Source: World Bank staff estimates based on the International Monetary Fund's Balance ofPayments Statistics Yearbook 200646 Relative figures may show a different pattern.41
